Neutrophils are the most abundant white blood cell, and differentiate in homeostasis in the bone marrow from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) via multiple intermediate progenitor cells into mature cells that enter the circulation. Recent findings support a continuous model of differentiation in the bone marrow of heterogeneous HSCs and progenitor populations. Cell fate decisions both at the level of proliferation and differentiation are enforced through expression of lineage-determining transcription factors (LDTFs) and their interactions, that are influenced by both intrinsic (intracellular) as well as extrinsic (extracellular) mechanisms. Neutrophil homeostasis is subjected to positive feedback loops, stemming from the gut microbiome, as well as negative feedback loops resulting from the clearance of apoptotic neutrophils by mature macrophages. Finally, the cellular kinetics regarding the replenishing of the mature neutrophil pool is discussed in light of recent, contradictory data.

The planning of activities of e-commerce enterprises and their behavior has been influenced by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. The behavior of e-commerce enterprises has been highlighted at the level of EU countries through an analysis elaborated on four variables: the value of e-commerce sales, cloud computing services, enterprises that have provided training to develop/upgrade the ICT skills of their personnel, e-commerce, customer relationship management (CRM) and secure transactions. Using the hierarchical clustering method, analysis was carried out on these variables to identify certain economic and behavioral patterns of e-commerce activity from 2018 and 2020. The study of the relationships involved in the e-commerce activity of these enterprises is reflected in models of the economic behavior of 31 European states in relation to the targeted variables. The results show that the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are strongly manifested in the direction of the evolution of each indicator but differ from one country to another. The trends depend on the level of development and the particularities of each country’s economy in adapting to the repercussions reported in relation to the level of impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is highlighted by the significant regrouping of countries in 2020 compared with 2018 in relation to the average values of the indicators. The results show that, in 2020, the most significant percentages of the value of e-commerce sales were recorded in Belgium, Ireland and Czechia, as in 2018. In e-commerce, customer relationship management and secure transactions, Denmark and Sweden were superior in 2020 to the countries mentioned above, which were dominant in 2018. For the other two indicators, Finland and Norway were the top countries included in the analysis in both years. The conclusion supports the continuous model of e-commerce enterprise behavior in order to meet the requirements of online customers.

This work shown as the fuzzy-EGARCH-ANN (fuzzy-exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic-artificial neural network) model does not require continuous model calibration if the corresponding DE algorithm is used appropriately, but other models such as GARCH, EGARCH, and EGARCH-ANN need continuous model calibration and validation so they fit the data and reality very well up to the desired accuracy. Also, a robust analysis of volatility forecasting of the daily S&P 500 data collected from Yahoo Finance for the daily spanning period 1/3/2006 to 20/2/2020. To our knowledge, this is the first study that focuses on the daily S&P 500 data using high-frequency data and the fuzzy-EGARCH-ANN econometric model. Finally, the research finds that the best performing model in terms of one-step-ahead forecasts based on realized volatility computed from the underlying daily data series is the fuzzy-EGARCH-ANN (1,1,2,1) model with Student’s t-distribution.

When DNA from a suspect is detected in a sample collected at a crime scene, there can be alternative explanations about the activity that may have led to the transfer, persistence and recovery of his/her DNA. Previous studies have shown that DNA can be indirectly transferred via intermediate surfaces and that DNA on a previously used object can persist after subsequent use of another individual. In addition, it has been shown that a person’s shedder status may influence transfer, persistence, prevalence, and recovery of DNA. In this study we have investigated transfer persistence and recovery on zip-lock bags and tape, which are commonly encountered in drug cases and how the shedder status of the participants influenced the results. A probabilistic framework was developed which was based on a previously described Bayesian network with case-specific modifications. Continuous modelling of data was used to inform the Bayesian networks and two case scenarios were investigated. In the specific scenarios only moderate to low support for Hp was obtained. Applying a continuous model based on the profile quality can change the LRs.

The aim of this work is to study qualitative dynamical properties of a generalized hepatitis B epidemic model and its dynamically consistent discrete model. Positivity, boundedness, the basic reproduction number and asymptotic stability properties of the model are analyzed rigorously. By the Lyapunov stability theory and the Poincare-Bendixson theorem in combination with the Bendixson-Dulac criterion, we show that a disease-free equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_0 \leq 1$ and a disease-endemic equilibrium point is globally asymptotically stable whenever $\mathcal{R}_0 > 1$. Next, we apply the Mickens’ methodology to propose a dynamically consistent nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) scheme for the continuous model. By rigorously mathematical analyses, it is proved that the constructed NSFD scheme preserves essential mathematical features of the continuous model for all finite step sizes. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the theoretical findings and to demonstrate advantages of the NSFD scheme over standard ones. The obtained results in this work not only improve but also generalize some existing recognized works.

AbstractRecent publications consider side-channel attacks against the key schedule of the Data Encryption Standard (DES). These publications identify a leakage model depending on the XOR of register values in the DES key schedule. Building on this leakage model, we first revisit a discrete model which assumes that the Hamming distances between subsequent round keys leak without error. We analyze this model formally and provide theoretical explanations for observations made in previous works. Next we examine a continuous model which considers more points of interest and also takes noise into account. The model gives rise to an evaluation function for key candidates and an associated notion of key ranking. We develop an algorithm for enumerating key candidates up to a desired rank which is based on the Fincke–Pohst lattice point enumeration algorithm. We derive information-theoretic bounds and estimates for the remaining entropy and compare them with our experimental results. We apply our attack to side-channel measurements of a security controller. Using our enumeration algorithm we are able to significantly improve the results reported previously for the same measurement data.

Abstract In the article biogeochemical processes of the Azov Sea were researched. Mathematical non-stationary 3D model is proposed which describes the development dynamics of the two most common species of phytoplankton populations in the summer, the growth of which is limited by a single biogenic element, is proposed the linearization of continuous mathematical model on a uniform temporal grid is made. For a continuous model, a discrete analogue is constructed and an optimal method for grid equations solving is selected. To determine the boundary of the considered computational domain of a complex shape an image processing algorithm has been developed, implemented as a software module on Python, which makes it possible to obtain a dynamically changing contour of the Azov Sea from satellite images.
