We present a simple O(n 4 ) -time algorithm for computing optimal search trees with two-way comparisons. The only previous solution to this problem, by Anderson et al., has the same running time but is significantly more complicated and is restricted to the variant where only successful queries are allowed. Our algorithm extends directly to solve the standard full variant of the problem, which also allows unsuccessful queries and for which no polynomial-time algorithm was previously known. The correctness proof of our algorithm relies on a new structural theorem for two-way-comparison search trees.

A set [Formula: see text] of a graph [Formula: see text] is called an efficient dominating set of [Formula: see text] if every vertex [Formula: see text] has exactly one neighbor in [Formula: see text], in other words, the vertex set [Formula: see text] is partitioned to some circles with radius one such that the vertices in [Formula: see text] are the centers of partitions. A generalization of this concept, introduced by Chellali et al. [k-Efficient partitions of graphs, Commun. Comb. Optim. 4 (2019) 109–122], is called [Formula: see text]-efficient dominating set that briefly partitions the vertices of graph with different radiuses. It leads to a partition set [Formula: see text] such that each [Formula: see text] consists a center vertex [Formula: see text] and all the vertices in distance [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text]. In other words, there exist the dominators with various dominating powers. The problem of finding minimum set [Formula: see text] is called the minimum [Formula: see text]-efficient domination problem. Given a positive integer [Formula: see text] and a graph [Formula: see text], the [Formula: see text]-efficient Domination Decision problem is to decide whether [Formula: see text] has a [Formula: see text]-efficient dominating set of cardinality at most [Formula: see text]. The [Formula: see text]-efficient Domination Decision problem is known to be NP-complete even for bipartite graphs [M. Chellali, T. W. Haynes and S. Hedetniemi, k-Efficient partitions of graphs, Commun. Comb. Optim. 4 (2019) 109–122]. Clearly, every graph has a [Formula: see text]-efficient dominating set but it is not correct for efficient dominating set. In this paper, we study the following: [Formula: see text]-efficient domination problem set is NP-complete even in chordal graphs. A polynomial-time algorithm for [Formula: see text]-efficient domination in trees. [Formula: see text]-efficient domination on sparse graphs from the parametrized complexity perspective. In particular, we show that it is [Formula: see text]-hard on d-degenerate graphs while the original dominating set has Fixed Parameter Tractable (FPT) algorithm on d-degenerate graphs. [Formula: see text]-efficient domination on nowhere-dense graphs is FPT.

This paper presents the design and development of a technique for an Autonomous and Versatile mode Parking System (AVPS) that combines a various number of parking modes. The proposed approach is different from that of many developed parking systems. Previous research has focused on choosing only a parking lot starting from two parking modes (which are parallel and perpendicular). This research aims at developing a parking system that automatically chooses a parking lot starting from four parking modes. The automatic AVPS was proposed for the car-parking control problem, and could be potentially exploited for future vehicle generation. A specific mode can be easily computed using the proposed strategy. A variety of candidate modes could be generated using one developed real time VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language) algorithm providing optimal solutions with performance measures. Based on simulation and experimental results, the AVPS is able to find and recognize in advance which parking mode to select. This combination describes full implementation on a mobile robot, such as a car, based on a specific FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) card. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed innovation, an evaluation process comparing the proposed technique with existing techniques was conducted and outlined.

AbstractA graph $$G = (V,E)$$ G = ( V , E ) is a double-threshold graph if there exist a vertex-weight function $$w :V \rightarrow \mathbb {R}$$ w : V → R and two real numbers $$\mathtt {lb}, \mathtt {ub}\in \mathbb {R}$$ lb , ub ∈ R such that $$uv \in E$$ u v ∈ E if and only if $$\mathtt {lb}\le \mathtt {w}(u) + \mathtt {w}(v) \le \mathtt {ub}$$ lb ≤ w ( u ) + w ( v ) ≤ ub . In the literature, those graphs are studied also as the pairwise compatibility graphs that have stars as their underlying trees. We give a new characterization of double-threshold graphs that relates them to bipartite permutation graphs. Using the new characterization, we present a linear-time algorithm for recognizing double-threshold graphs. Prior to our work, the fastest known algorithm by Xiao and Nagamochi [Algorithmica 2020] ran in $$O(n^{3} m)$$ O ( n 3 m ) time, where n and m are the numbers of vertices and edges, respectively.

The design process for analogue circuit design is formulated on the basis of the optimum control theory. The artificially introduced special control vector is defined for the redistribution of computational costs between network analysis and parametric optimization. This redistribution minimizes computer time. The problem of the minimal-time network design can be formulated in this case as a classical problem of the optimal control for some functional minimization. There is a principal difference between the new approach and before elaborated methodology. This difference is based on a higher level of the problem generalization. In this case the structural basis of design strategies is more complete and this circumstance gives possibility to obtain a great value of computer time gain. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness and prospects of a more generalized approach to circuit optimization. This approach generalizes the design process and generates an infinite number of the different design strategies that will serve as the structural basis for the minimal time algorithm construction. This paper is advocated to electronic systems built with transistors. The main equations for the system design process were elaborated.

This paper studies the slack due-window assignment scheduling problem with deterioration effects and a deterioration maintenance activity on a single-machine. The machine deteriorates during the machining process, and at a certain moment performs a deterioration maintenance activity, that is, the duration time of the maintenance activity is a linear function of the maintenance starting time. It is needed to make a decision on when to schedule the deteriorating maintenance activity, the optimal common flow allowances and the sequence of jobs to minimize the weighted penalties for the sum of earliness and tardiness, weighted number of early and delayed, and weighted due-window starting time and size. This paper proposes a polynomial time algorithm to solve this problem.

The communication class UPP cc is a communication analog of the Turing Machine complexity class PP . It is characterized by a matrix-analytic complexity measure called sign-rank (also called dimension complexity), and is essentially the most powerful communication class against which we know how to prove lower bounds. For a communication problem f , let f ∧ f denote the function that evaluates f on two disjoint inputs and outputs the AND of the results. We exhibit a communication problem f with UPP cc ( f ) = O (log n ), and UPP cc ( f ∧ f ) = Θ (log 2 n ). This is the first result showing that UPP communication complexity can increase by more than a constant factor under intersection. We view this as a first step toward showing that UPP cc , the class of problems with polylogarithmic-cost UPP communication protocols, is not closed under intersection. Our result shows that the function class consisting of intersections of two majorities on n bits has dimension complexity n Omega Ω(log n ) . This matches an upper bound of (Klivans, O’Donnell, and Servedio, FOCS 2002), who used it to give a quasipolynomial time algorithm for PAC learning intersections of polylogarithmically many majorities. Hence, fundamentally new techniques will be needed to learn this class of functions in polynomial time.

P vs NP is one of the open and most important mathematics/computer science questions that has not been answered since it was raised in 1971 despite its importance and a quest for a solution since 2000. P vs NP is a class of problems that no polynomial time algorithm exists for any. If any of the problems in the class gets solved in polynomial time, all can be solved as the problems are translatable to each other. One of the famous problems of this kind is Hamiltonian cycle. Here we propose a polynomial time algorithm with rigorous proof that it always finds a solution if there exists one. It is expected that this solution would address all problems in the class and have a major impact in diverse fields including computer science, engineering, biology, and cryptography.

The HTTP adaptive streaming technique opened the door to cope with the fluctuating network conditions during the streaming process by dynamically adjusting the volume of the future chunks to be downloaded. The bitrate selection in this adjustment inevitably involves the task of predicting the future throughput of a video session, owing to which various heuristic solutions have been explored. The ultimate goal of the present work is to explore the theoretical upper bounds of the QoE that any ABR algorithm can possibly reach, therefore providing an essential step to benchmarking the performance evaluation of ABR algorithms. In our setting, the QoE is defined in terms of a linear combination of the average perceptual quality and the buffering ratio. The optimization problem is proven to be NP-hard when the perceptual quality is defined by chunk size and conditions are given under which the problem becomes polynomially solvable. Enriched by a global lower bound, a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm along the dynamic programming approach is presented. When the minimum buffering is given higher priority over higher perceptual quality, the problem is shown to be also NP-hard, and the above algorithm is simplified and enhanced by a sequence of lower bounds on the completion time of chunk downloading, which, according to our experiment, brings a 36.0% performance improvement in terms of computation time. To handle large amounts of data more efficiently, a polynomial-time algorithm is also introduced to approximate the optimal values when minimum buffering is prioritized. Besides its performance guarantee, this algorithm is shown to reach 99.938% close to the optimal results, while taking only 0.024% of the computation time compared to the exact algorithm in dynamic programming.
