This chapter is the first chapter of the book dedicated to the study of the combinatorics of various quantum gravity approaches. After a brief introductory section to quantum gravity, we shortly mention the main candidates for a quantum theory of gravity: string theory, loop quantum gravity, and group field theory (GFT), causal dynamical triangulations, matrix models. The next sections introduce some GFT models such as the Boulatov model, the colourable and the multi-orientable model. The saddle point method for some specific GFT Feynman integrals is presented in the fifth section. Finally, some algebraic combinatorics results are presented: definition of an appropriate Conne–Kreimer Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of the renormalization of a certain tensor GFT model (the so-called Ben Geloun–Rivasseau model) and the use of its Hochschild cohomology for the study of the combinatorial Dyson–Schwinger equation of this specific model.

Abstract We discuss the discretization of Yang-Mills theories on Dynamical Triangulations in the compact formulation, with gauge fields living on the links of the dual graph associated with the triangulation, and the numerical investigation of the minimally coupled system by Monte Carlo simulations. We provide, in particular, an explicit construction and implementation of the Markov chain moves for 2D Causal Dynamical Triangulations coupled to either U(1) or SU(2) gauge fields; the results of exploratory numerical simulations on a toroidal geometry are also presented for both cases. We study the critical behavior of gravity-related observables, determining the associated critical indices, which turn out to be independent of the bare gauge coupling: we obtain in particular ν = 0.496(7) for the critical index regulating the divergence of the correlation length of the volume profiles. Gauge observables are also investigated, including holonomies (torelons) and, for the U(1) gauge theory, the winding number and the topological susceptibility. An interesting result is that the critical slowing down of the topological charge, which affects various lattice field theories in the continuum limit, seems to be strongly suppressed (i.e. by orders of magnitude) by the presence of a locally variable geometry: that may suggest possible ways for improvement also in other contexts.

Lattice formulations of gravity can be used to study non-perturbative aspects of quantum gravity. Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) is a lattice model of gravity that has been used in this way. It has a built-in time foliation but is coordinate-independent in the spatial directions. The higher-order phase transitions observed in the model may be used to define a continuum limit of the lattice theory. Some aspects of the transitions are better studied when the topology of space is toroidal rather than spherical. In addition, a toroidal spatial topology allows us to understand more easily the nature of typical quantum fluctuations of the geometry. In particular, this topology makes it possible to use massless scalar fields that are solutions to Laplace’s equation with special boundary conditions as coordinates that capture the fractal structure of the quantum geometry. When such scalar fields are included as dynamical fields in the path integral, they can have a dramatic effect on the geometry.

I give a historical survey of the discussions about the existence of closed timelike curves in general relativistic models of the universe, opening the physical possibility of time travel in the past, as first recognized by K. Gödel in his rotating universe model of 1949. I emphasize that journeying into the past is intimately linked to spacetime models devoid of timelike singularities. Since such singularities arise as an inevitable consequence of the equations of general relativity given physically reasonable assumptions, time travel in the past becomes possible only when one or another of these assumptions is violated. It is the case with wormhole-type solutions. S. Hawking and other authors have tried to “save” the paradoxical consequences of time travel in the past by advocating physical mechanisms of chronological protection; however, such mechanisms remain presently unknown, even when quantum fluctuations near horizons are taken into account. I close the survey by a brief and pedestrian discussion of Causal Dynamical Triangulations, an approach to quantum gravity in which causality plays a seminal role.

AbstractWe investigate the quantum Ricci curvature, which was introduced in earlier work, in full, four-dimensional quantum gravity, formulated nonperturbatively in terms of Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT). A key finding of the CDT approach is the emergence of a universe of de Sitter-type, as evidenced by the successful matching of Monte Carlo measurements of the quantum dynamics of the global scale factor with a semiclassical minisuperspace model. An important question is whether the quantum universe exhibits semiclassicality also with regard to its more local geometric properties. Using the new quantum curvature observable, we examine whether the (quasi-)local properties of the quantum geometry resemble those of a constantly curved space. We find evidence that on sufficiently large scales the curvature behaviour is compatible with that of a four-sphere, thus strengthening the interpretation of the dynamically generated quantum universe in terms of a de Sitter space.
