We give three applications of a recently-proven "Decomposition Lemma," which allows one to count preimages of certain sets of permutations under West's stack-sorting map $s$. We first enumerate the permutation class $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(231,321))=\text{Av}(2341,3241,45231)$, finding a new example of an unbalanced Wilf equivalence. This result is equivalent to the enumeration of permutations sortable by ${\bf B}\circ s$, where ${\bf B}$ is the bubble sort map. We then prove that the sets $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(231,312))$, $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(132,231))=\text{Av}(2341,1342,\underline{32}41,\underline{31}42)$, and $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(132,312))=\text{Av}(1342,3142,3412,34\underline{21})$ are counted by the so-called "Boolean-Catalan numbers," settling a conjecture of the current author and another conjecture of Hossain. This completes the enumerations of all sets of the form $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(\tau^{(1)},\ldots,\tau^{(r)}))$ for $\{\tau^{(1)},\ldots,\tau^{(r)}\}\subseteq S_3$ with the exception of the set $\{321\}$. We also find an explicit formula for $|s^{-1}(\text{Av}_{n,k}(231,312,321))|$, where $\text{Av}_{n,k}(231,312,321)$ is the set of permutations in $\text{Av}_n(231,312,321)$ with $k$ descents. This allows us to prove a conjectured identity involving Catalan numbers and order ideals in Young's lattice. Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1903.09138

Given a permutation $\tau$ defined on a set of combinatorial objects $S$, together with some statistic $f:S\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$, we say that the triple $\langle S, \tau,f \rangle$ exhibits homomesy if $f$ has the same average along all orbits of $\tau$ in $S$. This phenomenon was observed by Panyushev (2007) and later studied, named and extended by Propp and Roby (2013). Propp and Roby studied homomesy in the set of order ideals in the product of two chains, with two well known permutations, rowmotion and promotion, the statistic being the size of the order ideal. In this paper we extend their results to generalized rowmotion and promotion, together with a wider class of statistics in the product of two chains. Moreover, we derive similar results in other simply described posets. We believe that the framework we set up here can be fruitful in demonstrating homomesy results in order ideals of broader classes of posets.

Birational rowmotion is a discrete dynamical system on the set of all positive real-valued functions on a finite poset, which is a birational lift of combinatorial rowmotion on order ideals. It is known that combinatorial rowmotion for a minuscule poset has order equal to the Coxeter number, and exhibits the file homomesy phenomenon for refined order ideal cardinality statistics. In this paper we generalize these results to the birational setting. Moreover, as a generalization of birational promotion on a product of two chains, we introduce birational Coxeter-motion on minuscule posets, and prove that it enjoys periodicity and file homomesy.

J. Propp and T. Roby isolated a phenomenon in which a statistic on a set has the same average value over any orbit as its global average, naming it homomesy. They proved that the cardinality statistic on order ideals of the product of two chains poset under rowmotion exhibits homomesy. In this paper, we prove an analogous result in the case of the product of three chains where one chain has two elements. In order to prove this result, we generalize from two to n dimensions the recombination technique that D. Einstein and Propp developed to study homomesy. We see that our main homomesy result does not fully generalize to an arbitrary product of three chains, nor to larger products of chains; however, we have a partial generalization to an arbitrary product of three chains. Additional corollaries include refined homomesy results in the product of three chains and a new result on increasing tableaux. We conclude with a generalization of recombination to any ranked poset and a homomesy result for the Type B minuscule poset cross a two element chain.

In this paper, we consider the problem of computing all possible order ideals and also sets connected to 1, and the corresponding border bases, for the vanishing ideal of a given finite set of points. In this context, two different approaches are discussed: based on the Buchberger–Möller Algorithm [H. M. Möller and B. Buchberger, The construction of multivariate polynomials with preassigned zeros, EUROCAM ’82 Conf., Computer Algebra, Marseille/France 1982, Lect. Notes Comput. Sci. 144, (1982), pp. 24–31], we first propose a new algorithm to compute all possible order ideals and the corresponding border bases for an ideal of points. The second approach involves adapting the Farr–Gao Algorithm [J. B. Farr and S. Gao, Computing Gröbner bases for vanishing ideals of finite sets of points, in 16th Int. Symp. Applied Algebra, Algebraic Algorithms and Error-Correcting Codes. AAECC-16, Las Vegas, NV, USA (Springer, Berlin, 2006), pp. 118–127] for finding all sets connected to 1, as well as the corresponding border bases, for an ideal of points. It should be noted that our algorithms are term ordering free. Therefore, they can compute successfully all border bases for an ideal of points. Both proposed algorithms have been implemented and their efficiency is discussed via a set of benchmarks.

In this paper, we analyze the toggle group on the set of antichains of a poset. Toggle groups, generated by simple involutions, were first introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass for order ideals of posets. Recently Striker has motivated the study of toggle groups on general families of subsets, including antichains. This paper expands on this work by examining the relationship between the toggle groups of antichains and order ideals, constructing an explicit isomorphism between the two groups (for a finite poset). We also focus on the rowmotion action on antichains of a poset that has been well-studied in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, describing it as the composition of antichain toggles. We also describe a piecewise-linear analogue of toggling to the Stanley’s chain polytope. We examine the connections with the piecewise-linear toggling Einstein and Propp introduced for order polytopes and prove that almost all of our results for antichain toggles extend to the piecewise-linear setting.

A canonical join representation is a certain minimal "factorization" of an element in a finite lattice $L$ analogous to the prime factorization of an integer from number theory. The expression $\bigvee A =w$ is the canonical join representation of $w$ if $A$ is the unique lowest subset of $L$ satisfying $\bigvee A=w$ (where "lowest" is made precise by comparing order ideals under containment). Canonical join representations appear in many familiar guises, with connections to comparability graphs and noncrossing partitions. When each element in $L$ has a canonical join representation, we define the canonical join complex to be the abstract simplicial complex of subsets $A$ such that $\bigvee A$ is a canonical join representation. We characterize the class of finite lattices whose canonical join complex is flag, and show how the canonical join complex is related to the topology of $L$.
