Abstract The flow in the heated rotating cavity of an aero-engine compressor is driven by buoyancy forces, which result in pairs of cyclonic and anticyclonic vortices. The resultant cavity flow field is three-dimensional, unsteady and unstable, which makes it challenging to model the flow and heat transfer. In this paper, properties of the vortex structures are determined from novel unsteady pressure measurements collected on the rotating disc surface over a range of engine-representative parameters. These measurements are the first of their kind with practical significance to the engine designer and for validation of computational fluid dynamics. One cyclonic/anticyclonic vortex pair was detected over the experimental range, despite the measurement of harmonic modes in the frequency spectra at low Rossby numbers. It is shown that these modes were caused by unequal size vortices, with the cyclonic vortex the larger of the pair. The structures slipped relative to the discs at a speed typically around 10% to 15% of that of the rotor, but the speed of precession was often unsteady. The coherency, strength and slip of the vortex pair increased with the buoyancy parameter, due to the stronger buoyancy forces, but they were largely independent of the rotational Reynolds number.

Abstract We theoretically investigate quantum entanglement and coherence in a hybrid Laguerre-Gaussian rotating cavity optomechanical system with two-level atoms, where cavity and mechanical modes are coupled through the exchange of orbital angular momentum. Our study shows that the injection of atoms with a suitable choice of the physical parameters can significantly improve the degree of optomechanical entanglement in all aspects. In the study of quantum coherence research, we show more comprehensively the negative and positive effects of atoms on the coherence. The result obtained is that only when the atom is significantly offresonant to driving field, the coupling strength in between the atoms and light field increases and the quantum coherence can be enhanced, otherwise it will reduce quantum coherence. In addition, the atomic decay suppresses quantum coherence phenomenon.

Abstract The aeroengine turbine cavity with pre-swirl structure makes the turbine component obtain better cooling effect, but the complex design of inlet and outlet makes it difficult to determine the heat transfer reference temperature of turbine disk. For the pre-swirl structure with two air intakes, the driving temperature difference of heat transfer between disk and cooling air cannot be determined either in theory or in test, which is usually called three-temperature problem. In this paper, the three-temperature problem of a rotating cavity with two cross inlets are studied by means of experiment and numerical simulation. By substituting the adiabatic wall temperature for the inlet temperature and summarizing its variation law, the problem of selecting the reference temperature of the multi-inlet cavity can be solved. The results show that the distribution of the adiabatic wall temperature is divided into the high jet area and the low inflow area, which are mainly affected by the turbulence parameters λT, the rotating Reynolds number Reω, the high inlet temperature Tf,H* and the low radius inlet temperature Tf,L* of the inflow, while the partition position rd can be considered only related to the turbulence parameters λT and the rotating Reynolds number Reω of the inflow. In this paper, based on the analysis of the numerical simulation results, the calculation formulas of the partition position rd and the adiabatic wall temperature distribution are obtained. The results show that the method of experiment combined with adiabatic wall temperature zone simulation can effectively solve the three-temperature problem of rotating cavity.

Abstract Across the open literature, there is no clear consensus on what the most suitable modeling fidelity is for rotating cavity flows. Although it is a widely held opinion that unsteady Reynolds-averaged-Navier–Stokes (URANS) approaches are unsuitable, many authors have succeeded in getting reasonable heat transfer results with them. There is also a lack of research into the validity of hybrid URANS/large eddy simulation (LES) type approaches such as detached eddy simulation (DES). This paper addresses these research challenges with a systematic investigation of a rotating cavity with axial throughflow at Grashof numbers of 3.03×109 and 3.03×1011. The disk near-wall layers remained laminar at both conditions, meaning that a turbulence model should not be active in these regions. The disk heat transfer was observed to affect the near-disk aerodynamics, which in turn affect the disk heat transfer: this feedback loop implies that conjugate heat transfer computations of rotating cavities may be worth investigating. On the shroud, additional eddy viscosity in URANS and DES was found to interfere with the formation of heat transfer enhancing streaks, whilst these were always captured by LES. DES exhibited a concerning behavior at the higher Grashof number. Locally generated eddy viscosity from the shroud was injected into the bulk fluid by the radial inflow. This contaminated the entire cavity with nonphysical modeled turbulence. As the radial inflow is a characteristic feature of rotating cavity flows, these results show that caution is necessary when applying hybrid URANS/LES approaches to this type of flow.

Abstract The blade clearance in aero-engine compressors is mainly controlled by the radial growth of the compressor discs, to which the blades are attached. This growth depends on the radial distribution of the disc temperature, which in turn is determined by the heat transfer inside the internal rotating cavity between adjacent discs. The buoyancy-induced convection inside the cavity is significantly weaker than that associated with the forced convection in the external mainstream flow, and consequently radiation between the cavity surfaces cannot be ignored in the calculation of the disc temperatures. In this paper, both the Monte Carlo Ray-Trace Method and the view factor method are used to calculate the radiative flux when the temperatures of the discs, shroud and inner shaft of the compressor vary radially and axially. Given distributions of surface temperatures, the blackbody and grey body heat fluxes were calculated for the discs, shroud and inner shaft in two experimental compressor rigs and in a simulated compressor stage. For the experimental rigs, although the effect of radiation was relatively small for the case of large Grashof numbers, the relative effect of radiation increases as Gr (and consequently the convective heat transfer) decreases. For the simulated compressor, with a pressure ratio of 50:1 for state-of-art aircraft engines, radiation could have a significant effect on the disc temperature and consequently on the blade clearance; the effect is predicted to be more prominent for next generation of aircraft engines with pressure ratios up to 70:1.
