One of the disadvantages of conventional steel structures in Iran is the common way of I-shaped beam to double column fixed connection that do not perform well against seismic loads. This article uses the side plate to modify and optimize the connection. Using this new geometry, the beam-to-column direct connection is eliminated, and there is no longer any concern about the brittle fracture of penetration weld of the beam-to-column connection and the weakness of panel zone that occur in the common fixed connections. In addition, by eliminating the direct transfer of beam flange force to the double column connection plate, the problem of deformation, complexity or buckling of the cover plate of the column is spontaneously removed. In this paper, in order to investigate the nonlinear behavior of beam-to-double column connection system, a number of three-dimensional finite element models under the effect of cyclic loading have been analyzed. The results show that the beam-to-double column connection using the side plates has good strength and ductility and can be used in special moment frames for seismic areas.

<p>The Lille Langebro (Little Langebro) pedestrian and cycle swing bridge opened to the public in August 2019. The bridge provides a quay-level crossing of the harbour for pedestrians and cyclists and was the outcome of an international design competition. In order to enable the passage of marine craft along the harbour the central sections of the bridge rotate. This paper gives a brief overview of the operating equipment associated with the movement of the two rotating spans before a more detailed discussion on the innovative moment connection developed to secure the joint between the two moving spans when in the bridge closed position.</p>

<p>The Lille Langebro is a major new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the harbour in Copenhagen. The bridge forms a sleek, low level crossing that curves in plan as well as elevation. The superstructure consists of fabricated steel box sections of complex geometry and includes two balanced double cantilever spans on slew bearings which rotate to allow the passage of large ships. The rotating spans are fixed together in the closed position by an arrangement of proprietary mechanical components which form an innovative structural moment connection at mid-span. The complex nature of the structure presented many challenges to the design and construction that were successfully overcome through close cooperation between the client, designers and contractors. This paper will explain some of these challenges and the lessons that can be learnt for use in future projects.</p>

The unpredictability of the steel beam welding connection has led to many solutions, including the are of focus for this research Reduced Beam Section ( Moment Connections The RBS in steel moment connection facilitates the calculation and predictability of failure in design The RBS section is created by cutting out part of the flanges in a beam This creates a plastic hinge where the beam will fail first 1 This creates a model of predictability on the durability and strength of the beams Creating a RBS connection increases the overall ductility of the steel frame The RBS section reduces the flange width which causes stress concentration on the reduced section and this then lowers the stress on the welds. The lower stress then prevents unexpected brittle fracture in the welding a predicted plastic deformation of the RBS section during a seismic event 2 3 The research is focused on optimizing the RBS connection Finite models will be created using ANSYS to investigate how different RBS connections react in different situations and what is the most efficient design in terms of safety and cost.
