Abstract The paper tries to survey the recent results about relationships between covering properties of a topological space X and the space USC(X) of upper semicontinuous functions on X with the topology of pointwise convergence. Dealing with properties of continuous functions C(X), we need shrinkable covers. The results are extended for A-measurable and upper A-semimeasurable functions where A is a family of subsets of X. Similar results for covers respecting a bornology and spaces USC(X) or C(X) endowed by a topology defined by using the bornology are presented. Some of them seem to be new.

The paper describes the structure of a linear continuous operator on the space of continuous functions in the topology of pointwise convergence. The corresponding theorem is a generalization of A.V.Arkhangel'skii's theorem on the general form of a continuous linear functional on such spaces.

For a Tychonoff space X, we denote by (C(X), ?k ?p) the bitopological space of all real-valued continuous functions on X, where ?k is the compact-open topology and ?p is the topology of pointwise convergence. In the papers [6, 7, 13] variations of selective separability and tightness in (C(X),?k,?p) were investigated. In this paper we continue to study the selective properties and the corresponding topological games in the space (C(X),?k,?p).

For pointed compact metric spaces $(X,d)$, we address the biduality problem as to when the space of Lipschitz functions $\mathrm{Lip}_0 (X,d)$ is isometrically isomorphic to the bidual of the space of little Lipschitz functions $\mathrm{lip}_0 (X,d)$, and show that this is the case whenever the closed unit ball of $\mathrm{lip}_0 (X,d)$ is dense in the closed unit ball of $\mathrm{Lip}_0 (X,d)$ with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence. Then we apply our density criterion to prove in an alternative way the real version of a classical result which asserts that $\mathrm{Lip}_0 (X,d^\alpha )$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathrm{lip}_0 (X,d^\alpha )^{**}$ for any $\alpha \in (0,1)$.

AbstractWe study properties of strongly separately continuous mappings defined on subsets of products of topological spaces equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a strongly separately continuous mapping to be continuous on a product of an arbitrary family of topological spaces. Moreover, we characterize the discontinuity point set of strongly separately continuous function defined on a subset of countable product of finite-dimensional normed spaces.

The Bishop property (♗), introduced recently by K. P. Hart, T. Kochanek and the first-named author, was motivated by Pełczyński’s classical work on weakly compact operators on $C(K)$-spaces. This property asserts that certain chains of functions in said spaces, with respect to a particular partial ordering, must be countable. There are two versions of (♗): one applies to linear operators on $C(K)$-spaces and the other to the compact Hausdorff spaces themselves. We answer two questions that arose after (♗) was first introduced. We show that if $\mathscr{D}$ is a class of compact spaces that is preserved when taking closed subspaces and Hausdorff quotients, and which contains no nonmetrizable linearly ordered space, then every member of $\mathscr{D}$ has (♗). Examples of such classes include all $K$ for which $C(K)$ is Lindelöf in the topology of pointwise convergence (for instance, all Corson compact spaces) and the class of Gruenhage compact spaces. We also show that the set of operators on a $C(K)$-space satisfying (♗) does not form a right ideal in $\mathscr{B}(C(K))$. Some results regarding local connectedness are also presented.

AbstractWe present a few results and problems related to spaces of continuous functions with the topology of pointwise convergence and the classes of LΣ(≤ ω)-spaces; in particular, we prove that every Gul’ko compact space of cardinality less or equal to $$ \mathfrak{c} $$ is an LΣ(≤ ω)-space.

AbstractIn [HOLÁ, Ľ.—HOLÝ, D.: Pointwise convergence of quasicontinuous mappings and Baire spaces, Rocky Mountain J. Math.] a complete answer is given, for a Baire space X, to the question of when the pointwise limit of a sequence of real-valued quasicontinuous functions defined on X is quasicontinuous. In [HOLÁ, Ľ.—HOLÝ, D.: Minimal USCO maps, densely continuous forms and upper semicontinuous functions, Rocky Mountain J. Math. 39 (2009), 545–562], a characterization of minimal USCO maps by quasicontinuous and subcontinuous selections is proved. Continuing these results, we study closed and compact subsets of the space of quasicontinuous functions and minimal USCO maps equipped with the topology of pointwise convergence. We also study conditions under which the closure of the graph of a set-valued mapping which is the pointwise limit of a net of set-valued mappings, is a minimal USCO map.
