Erosion of cohesive sediments is a ubiquitous phenomenon in estuarine and intertidal environments. Several methods have been proposed to determine the surface erosion threshold (τc0), which are still debatable because of the numerous and uncertain definitions. Based on erosion microcosm experiments, we have compared three different methods using (1) eroded mass (EM), (2) erosion rate (ER), and (3) suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and suggested a suitable method for revealing the variation of erodibility in intertidal sediments. Erosion experiments using a microcosm system were carried out in the Muuido tidal flat, west coast of South Korea. The mean values of τc0 for three methods were: 0.20 ± 0.08 Pa (EM); 0.18 ± 0.07 Pa (ER); and (3) 0.17 ± 0.09 Pa (SSC). The SSC method yielded the lowest τc0, due to the outflow of suspended sediment from the erosion chamber of the microcosm. This was because SSC gradually decreased with time after depleting the erodible sediment at a given bed shear stress (τb). Therefore, the regression between SSC and applied τb might skew an x-intercept, resulting in the underestimation (or “not-determined”) of τc0. The EM method yielded robust and accurate (within the range of τb step at which erosion begins) results. The EM method represents how the erodible depth thickens as τb increases and therefore seems better suited than the SSC and ER methods for representing depth-limited erosion of cohesive sediments. Furthermore, this study identified the spatiotemporal variations of τc0 by EM method in an intertidal flat. The τc0 in mud flat was about two times higher than that in mixed flat. Compared to the end of tidal emersion, the sediment was 10–40% more erodible at the beginning stage.

Abstract. Hydrological conditions drive the distribution of plant communities in wetlands to form vegetation zones where the material cycling varies with plant species. This mediation effect caused by the distribution of vegetation under hydrological conditions will affect the emission of N2O during the nitrogen migration in wetlands. In this study, five vegetation zones in the second largest wetland of China were investigated in situ during high and low water levels to elucidate the effect mediated by vegetation. With the increase in the rate of change of water levels, the zones of the mud flat, nymphoides, phalaris, carex, and reeds were distributed in sequence in the wetland, and the densities of carbon and nitrogen sequestrated by plants also increased. The carbon and nitrogen densities in each zone during low water level was significantly higher than that during high water level, while the organic carbon and the total nitrogen of sediments during high water level was higher. Sediments converted between source and sink for both carbon and nitrogen, during the annual fluctuation in water level. The flux in N2O emissions showed significant differences between the vegetation zones during each water level period. The emission flux decreased with the increasing C : N ratio in sediments, approximating the threshold at 0.23 μg m−2 h−1 when the C : N ratio > 25. The phylum abundance of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi in sediments increased with flooding. The denitrifying nirS and nirK genes and anammox hzsB gene were significantly affected by water level fluctuation, with the maximal variations of these genes occurring in the mud flat and nymphoides zone. The results indicate that the distribution of plants under hydrological conditions modified the stoichiometric ratio of sediments, resulting in the variations of N2O emission fluxes and microbial communities in vegetation zones. Therefore, hydraulic regulation rather than direct planting would be an effective strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in freshwater wetlands.

Two novel esterase genes, est2L and est4L, were identified from a previously constructed metagenomic library derived from an oil-polluted mud flat sample. The encoded Est2L and Est4L were composed of 839 and 267 amino acids, respectively, without signal peptides. Est2L was a unique fusion type of protein composed of two domains: a domain of the CzcO superfamily, associated with a cationic diffusion promoter with CzcD, and a domain of the acetylesterase superfamily, belonging to family IV with conserved motifs, such as HGG, GXSAG, and GXPP. Est2L was the first fused esterase with a CzcO domain. Est4L belonged to family V with GXS, GXSMGG, and PTL motifs. Native Est2L and Est4L were found to be in dimeric and tetrameric forms, respectively. Est2L and Est4L showed the highest activities at 60 °C and 50 °C, respectively, and at a pH of 10.0. Est2L preferred short length substrates, especially p-nitrophenyl (pNP)-acetate, with moderate butyrylcholinesterase activity, whereas Est4L showed the highest activity with pNP-decanoate and had broad specificity. Significant effects were not observed in Est2L from Co2+ and Zn2+, although Est2L contains the domain CzcD. Est2L and Est4L showed high stabilities in 30% methanol and 1% Triton X-100. These enzymes could be used for a variety of applications, such as detergent and mining processing under alkaline conditions.

The very uncommon alpheid shrimp Bermudacaris britayevi Anker, Poddoubtchenko & Marin, 2006, previously known only from the incomplete holotype from Nha Trang Bay, Vietnam, is recorded from Guam, Mariana Islands, extending its previously known distribution range into the oceanic islands of the western Pacific. The single specimen from Guam, an ovigerous female, was collected adjacent to a near-shore coral reef, on fine sand under a large piece of coral rubble, at a depth of about 10 m. This habitat is different from the collection data of the holotype, which was extracted from a burrow of unknown host on an intertidal sand-mud flat close to mangroves. Despite these ecological differences, the specimen from Guam corresponds to the holotype of B. britayevi in all diagnostic morphological characters and can be distinguished from the closely related B. australiensis Anker & Komai, 2004 and B. harti Anker & Iliffe, 2000. Since the holotype of B. britayevi was lacking one of the chelipeds, the complete specimen from Guam enables to complement the original description of the species. The stouter (= major) cheliped of the Guam specimen is illustrated to show a marked difference in the armature of the cheliped fingers, between the left and right cheliped. The colour pattern of B. britayevi, which was superficially described in the original description, is herein illustrated by photographs of the living individual. The relatively low number and large size of eggs in the Guam specimen of B. britayevi suggests an abbreviated larval development in this species.

<p>The definition of reference conditions has a major role for the understanding of the present-day and paleoecological quality status on transitional environments. The estuarine quality paradox and the paucity of unimpacted sites make the definition of reference conditions a challenging task. In this context, the integration of biological indicators with stratigraphic data is essential, as the vertical stacking pattern of facies composing the shallow subsurface of modern coastal plains reflects changes in physical-chemical parameters which, in turn, affect (paleo-)biotic communities.</p><p>In the Po coastal plain (N Italy), the mid to late Holocene back-barrier succession of the Mezzano Lowland and the adjacent present-day Bellocchio Lagoon offer a unique example of pristine paralic system for comparing reference conditions defined in fossil and modern settings, respectively. Benthic foraminifers and ostracods from the Mezzano succession allowed us to investigate vertical (i.e., temporal) and lateral (i.e., spatial) changes in (paleo-)environmental conditions, in analogy to the lateral variations recorded at the Bellocchio Lagoon.</p><p>Both sites present subtidal channel sands almost barren in autochthonous meiofauna and fine-grained lagoon sediments with abundant benthic foraminifers and ostracods mostly represented by euryhaline taxa recording the highest diversity. Intertidal muddy deposits are also recorded, including mud flat clays with abundant oligotypic assemblages dominated by highly-confined benthic foraminifers. In the present study, we demonstrate that changes in modern benthic foraminifer assemblages diversity and composition often interpreted as perturbations of ecological conditions in response to anthropogenic pressures also occur under natural state, as confirmed by paleoenvironmental conditions recorded by ostracods. This reflects the effects of authogenic processes at short time and geographic scales.</p>

ABSTRACT Thin tidal estuarine deposits of the Naturita Formation (0–23 m) of the San Rafael Swell record the initial flooding of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway, Utah, and capture the transition from inland fluvial systems to fully marine conditions over a time period of 5 My or less. A tide-dominated estuarine environment is favored due to the combined presence of mud and/or carbonaceous drapes on ripples and dunes, bidirectional flow indicators, sigmoidal cross-stratification, herring-bone cross-stratification, and bimodal paleocurrent measurements. Facies associations are arranged in a predictable manner. Locally at the base of the Naturita Formation, tidally influenced fluvial channel deposits are present. These are overlain by tidal bars, including subtidal bars and intertidal point bars. Overlying the tidal bars are sand-flat and mud-flat deposits as well as bedded coal and carbonaceous mudstone that represents a supratidal setting in the estuary. The Formation can be capped by a thin transgressive lag composed of shell debris, and/or pebbles, that marks the final transition into the fully marine Tununk Shale Member of the overlying Mancos Shale. Lateral relationships between estuaries and adjacent paleohighs shed light on the influence of foreland-basin tectonics on the location and preservation of tide-dominated estuaries. Estuarine and shoreface deposits are absent along the eastern flank of the San Rafael Swell and eastward for more than 80 km. This zone of nondeposition or erosion is coincident with the location of the forebulge in the developing foreland basin, implying that growth of the forebulge prohibited the development of, or enhanced the later erosion of, estuarine deposits. Conversely, enhanced accommodation in the transition into the foredeep depozone allow the preservation of tide-dominated estuarine deposits along the western flank of the San Rafael Swell. Additionally, the possibility of a pre-Laramide tectonic history for the San Rafael Swell is indicated by a distinct lack of Naturita Formation deposits in an area that is coincident with the modern-day axis of the anticline. Overall, the Naturita records the initial flooding of the Western Interior Seaway in the San Rafael Swell region and provides an excellent case study of the deposits that are laid down in a transgressive system that passes from coastal-plain to offshore deposits.

Abstract Landscape features and the ecology of suitable hosts influence the phenology of invasive tick species. The southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), vectors causal agents of babesiosis in cattle and it infests exotic, feral nilgai, Bosephalus tragocamelus Pallas, and indigenous white-tailed deer, Odocoilus virginianus (Zimmerman), on the South Texas coastal plain wildlife corridor. The corridor extends from the Mexico border to cattle ranches extending north from inside Willacy Co. Outbreaks of R. microplus infesting cattle and nondomesticated ungulate hosts since 2014 in the wildlife corridor have focused attention on host infestation management and, by extension, dispersal. However, there is a knowledge gap on the ecology of R. microplus outbreaks in the South Texas coastal plain wildlife corridor. Ixodid distribution on the wildlife corridor is strongly influenced by habitat salinity. Saline habitats, which constitute ≈25% of the wildlife corridor, harbor few ixodids because of occasional salt toxicity from hypersaline wind tides and infrequent storm surges, and from efficient egg predation by mud flat fiddler crabs, Uca rapax (Smith). Rhipicephalus microplus infestations on nilgai were more prevalent in part of the corridor with mixed low salinity and saline areas than in an area that is more extensively saline. The different levels of R. microplus infestation suggest that man-made barriers have created isolated areas where the ecology of R. microplus outbreaks involve infested nilgai. The possible utility of man-made barriers for R. microplus eradication in the lower part of the South Texas coastal plain wildlife corridor is discussed.
