Templates in Qualitative Research Methods: Origins, Limitations, and New Directions

In this feature topic, we explore the burgeoning trend to employ templates in qualitative research. To understand authors’ motivations to use templates and perceptions regarding template use in the scholarly community, we conducted an interview study with 21 interviewees who had published qualitative research in one of nine premier management journals between 2014 and 2018. Our analysis identified four key tensions in template use: structure versus restriction, convention versus innovativeness, legitimization versus obscuration, and instrumentality versus craft. We discuss these tensions and their implications for the practice and evaluation of qualitative research. We then introduce the eight empirical papers included in this feature topic. Each of them addresses and explores specific aspects of the origins and limitations of template use, whilst providing insights and guidance for future qualitative research. We envisage this feature topic to be a catalyst for discourse amongst scholars, engaging with contemporary trends and tensions to pave new pathways that embrace the diversity and plurality of qualitative approaches.

The wrong horse was bet on – The Effects of Argument Structure versus Argument Adjacency on the Processing of Idiomatic Sentences

Psycholinguistc research remains puzzled by the question under what circurmstances syntactically transformed idioms keep their figurative meaning. In this study we examined the effects of verb argument structure and argument adjacency on the processing of idiomatic and literal sentences in German. In two sentence-completion experiments, participants listened to idiomatic and literal sentences, both in active and passive voice, without the sentence-final verb. They indicated via button-press, which of three visually presented verbs best completed the sentence.In both experiments, idiomatic sentences were processed faster than literal ones, and active sentences faster than passive ones. In passivized sentences, the patterns of argument structure and argument adjacency reversed across experiments: In Experiment 1, sentences with ditransitive verbs were processed faster than sentences with transitive verbs, and vice versa in Experiment 2. This pattern corresponds to faster processing of adjacent than of nonadjacent arguments and thus points to the dominating role of argument adjacency rather than argumentstructure in the processing of passivized sentences. With respect to idiom processing, we conclude that the adjacency of the verb and its arguments determines whether passivized idioms keep their figurative meaning.

Structure versus function: Are new conformations of pannexin 1 yet to be resolved?

Pannexin 1 (Panx1) plays a decisive role in multiple physiological and pathological settings, including oxygen delivery to tissues, mucociliary clearance in airways, sepsis, neuropathic pain, and epilepsy. It is widely accepted that Panx1 exerts its role in the context of purinergic signaling by providing a transmembrane pathway for ATP. However, under certain conditions, Panx1 can also act as a highly selective membrane channel for chloride ions without ATP permeability. A recent flurry of publications has provided structural information about the Panx1 channel. However, while these structures are consistent with a chloride selective channel, none show a conformation with strong support for the ATP release function of Panx1. In this Viewpoint, we critically assess the existing evidence for the function and structure of the Panx1 channel and conclude that the structure corresponding to the ATP permeation pathway is yet to be determined. We also list a set of additional topics needing attention and propose ways to attain the large-pore, ATP-permeable conformation of the Panx1 channel.

Co-Investment Network of ERC-20 Tokens: Network Structure Versus Market Performance

Cryptocurrencies have attracted extensive attention from individual and institutional investors in recent years. In this emerging and inefficient capital market, the roles that institutional investors play can have a remarkable impact on the market. This paper investigates the ERC-20 token investment market from a network perspective. Using a dataset containing 317 ERC-20 tokens and their institutional investors at the end of June 2020, we construct a co-investment network of tokens connected by the sharing of institutional investors. Specifically, we examine whether the tokens’ market embeddedness, measured by their network structural properties, can influence their market performance, as well as whether the tokens’ structural similarity in the co-investment network can influence similarity of their market performance. Our results indicate that strength centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality, and clustering coefficient have a significant impact on trading volume and liquidity of the market. And there is a significantly positive correlation between the Jaccard similarity index and tokens’ market performance similarity. This work demonstrates the non-negligible influence of the institutional investors and the diffusion of such influence through co-investment relationships in the cryptocurrency market. We expect the analysis could further enhance the understanding of the inefficiency and vulnerability of this emerging market.
