Building type identification is an important task that may be used in confirming and verifying its legitimate operation. One of the main sources of information over the operation of a building is its energy consumption, with the analysis of electricity patterns being at the spotlight of a non-intrusive identification approach. However, electricity patterns are the only source of information, and therefore, their analysis imposes several restrictions. In this work, we introduce a new approach in energy-driven identification by adding one more source of information beyond the electricity pattern that may be utilized, namely the gas consumption pattern. In particular, we propose a new intelligent approach that jointly analyzes the electricity–gas patterns to provide the type of building at hand. Our approach exploits the synergism of the matrix profile data analysis technique with a feed-forward artificial neural network. This approach has applicability in the energy waste elimination through the implementation of different energy efficiency solutions, as well as the optimization of the demand-side process management, safer and reliable operation through fault detection, and the identification and validation of the real operation of the building. The obtained results demonstrate the improvement in identifying the type of the building by employing the proposed approach for joint electricity–gas patterns as compared to only using the electricity patterns.

AbstractAbdominal radiograph (AR) is often the initial radiological investigation performed while investigating abdominal pain even today. However, in the era of cross-sectional imaging, the role of AR in the diagnosis of acute pain abdomen is being questioned. When AR is used as a screening modality, the diagnostic yield is low. When performed in suspected cases of bowel obstruction or perforation, urinary calculi, or bowel ischemia, AR is often helpful. AR is often the first radiological investigation performed in acute abdomen. Although the role of plain radiograph is limited in the era of cross-sectional imaging, systemic approach and vigilant search for the radiological features on AR may be diagnostic and decide further line of investigation. Various gas patterns of intraluminal and free peritoneal air are helpful in localizing pathology. Different patterns of calcification seen in abdomen, ingested or inserted foreign bodies, and location of medical devices give a clue to diagnosis.

Background: A few young patients were brought in with subacute combined spinal cord degeneration at the Department of Neurology in our hospital. They all have used laughing gas for recreational purposes. Case: A 30-year-old woman, known with alcohol abuse, was presented to our Department of Neurology for having paresthesia and unstable movements of arms, legs, and trunk for 9 days. She has used 50 laughing gas patterns per day. The diagnosis of laughing gas–induced combined spinal cord degeneration was evident by the low count of vitamin B12 combined with lesions shown on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Abstaining from the laughing gas, weekly intramuscular injections of hydroxocobalamin and revalidation, she was fully recovered in 8 weeks. Conclusions: Recreational use of laughing gas seems to be more used in our society, however, without having any knowledge of the neurological consequences. The right diagnosis and treatment can provide full recovery in these patients. Furthermore, attention for this diagnosis can help increase social awareness.
