Abstract IUPAC has released the results of its 2021 search for the Top Ten Emerging Technologies in Chemistry. The goal of this project is to showcase the transformative value of Chemistry and to inform the general public on the potential of the chemical sciences to foster the well-being of Society and the sustainability of our Planet. Following the same guidance as it did last year, the Jury The Jury was an international group of objective and unbiased experts who reviewed and discussed a pool of nominations, and ultimately selected the final top ten. The following comprised the panel of judges for the 2021 Top Ten Emerging Technologies in Chemistry: Chair, Michael Droescher, (German Association for the Advancement of Science and Medicine), Jorge Alegre-Cebollada (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares, Spain), Sophie Carenco (French National Center for Scientific Research, France), Javier García Martínez (Universidad de Alicante, Spain), Ehud Keinan (Technion, Israel), Rai Kookana (CSIRO Land & Water, Australia), Greg Russell (University of Canterbury, New Zealand), Ken Sakai (Kyushu University, Japan), Natalia P. Tarasova (D. I. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology, Russia), and Bernard West (Life Sciences Ontario, Canada). , a selection of international experts, identified different emerging technologies, scientific advances in between a discovery and a fully-commercialized ideas, with outstanding capacity to open new opportunities in chemistry, sustainability, and beyond. The 2021 finalists are (in alphabetical order):

The primary intention of any scientific work is to share the gained knowledge and to contribute to the knowledge and progress in the scientific domain. The wide range of journals and conferences, each with specific submission requirements, can be difficult to navigate, especially for young scientists without extensive experience. But a suitable publication strategy can be helpful, especially at the beginning of a scientific career. Using the annual conference of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) e.V. as an example, this editorial highlights fundamental differences, advantages and disadvantages, as well as assistance in selecting the right form of submission.

Innovative and variable technologies to ensure the quality and competitiveness of the education system through continuous training of teachers in the world have been introduced into the educational process. “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)” adopted at the 70th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly, “United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization”, “European Higher Education Area (EHEA)” , The European Center for the Development of Vocational Education (CEDEFOP), the Center for Lifelong Learning (DIE) and the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Association of People's Universities (DVV International) ”in the concepts of“ competency-based education Systematic work is being carried out on the implementation of large-scale practical projects to improve the mechanisms of humanization and development of education through the implementation of the model "learning).

Preventing the health system from collapse has been repeatedly stated as one of the main objectives for the German containment policy for SARS COV 2. The exact relation between infections recorded in the public surveillance system maintained by the German center for disease control (RKI) and data on hospital occupation published by the German association for intensive care an emergency medicine (DIVI) has not been analyzed to date. Using a stepwise approach as described in the paper a linear regression model based on recorded infections with known disease onset was found to be the most suitable predictor for the number of ICU patients with a positive test for SARS COV 2 one month later. The model showed an excellent model fit with nearly 90% explained variance and reliable prediction of the maximum when applied to data beyond the construction dataset. Still, the number of additional patients with a diagnosis of COVID 19 does not necessarily mean a reduction of ICU capacities in the same dimension. Based on a examination of interrelations between parameters published in the DIVI registry it is concluded that a temporary reorganization of hospital care for SARS COV 2 positive patients would probably help to mitigate the risks coming with increasing infection rates.

This volume uses literary texts, films and computer games to examine how the specifically modern narrative of time-out is represented. The contributions examine time-out narratives from early Romanticism to contemporary pop and game culture: a polyphonic contribution to the cultural history of time-out, that has yet to be written. The volume is based on a panel organised by Stephanie Catani (University of Würzburg) and Friedhelm Marx (University of Bamberg) as part of the 26th Conference of the German Association of German Studies 2019 at Saarland University. With contributions by Prof. Dr. Sabina Becker, PD Dr. Juliane Blank, Prof. Dr. Stephanie Catani, apl. Prof. Dr. Michael Eggers, Prof. Dr. Jörn Glasenapp, Roya Hauck, PD Dr. Nikolas Immer, Prof. Dr. Friedhelm Marx, Beatrice May, Dr. Jasmin Pfeiffer, PD Dr. Jörg Schuster and Julian Weinert.

Cognitive integrity has a multifactorial basis and is essential for quality of life and wellbeing. Several lifestyle programs including those using cognitive training have been developed in the past recent years to preserve cognitive health, but there is still debate about the most effective strategy to be used. We retrospectively analyzed data from 289 healthy participants of the BrainProtect® cognitive training program, developed by the German Association for Memory Training (Bundesverband Gedächtnistraining e.V.). Eight weekly 90- minute sessions of cognitive exercises were holistically structured to include physical exercises and nutrition counseling basing upon social interaction. The large majority (79.9%) of the participants showed improved cognitive scores after the intervention with respect to the baseline, with more than 10/69 points gained. Almost 60% felt their cognitive efficiency increased and an average increase in all cognitive domain explored could be observed. This retrospective analysis of preliminary data suggests that BrainProtect® might improve mental fitness after 8 weeks of multidomain cognition-centered training. These encouraging results need to be confirmed in further randomized studies.
