Virtual Reality and Immersive Representation in Recent Refugee Narratives

Virtual reality (VR) offers an exciting new way to represent crises of forced migration. Like many new technologies, though, VR risks exacerbating the challenges that exist in more traditional modes of representation, particularly that of documentary film. This essay examines two VR projects that depict migrants attempting to cross borders: Carne y Arena (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible) by Alejandro González Iñárritu and We Wait, co-produced by Aardman Studios and the BBC. The two projects differ in technique but share many characteristics as they attempt to encourage empathy in the viewer through the use of immersive technology.

Evidence-Based Immersive Technology Use in Cognitive Assessments and Cognition-Based Interventions

The merging of immersive technologies and cognition has been around for a while. However, it is only in the last decade or so that immersive technologies' contributions in the areas of cognitive assessments and interventions have gathered recognition. This chapter covers findings from published research in cognition-based assessments and interventions using the immersive technologies of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). The role of immersive technologies in cognition is critically evaluated to inform all its stakeholders about its potential for use in the future.

Application of immersive technology interventions in sexual victims: A systematic review protocol

Review question / Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to critically evaluate the current evidence regarding the immersive technology interventions in sexual victims in terms of applied methodology and patient-related outcomes. Accordingly, this systematic review will address the following questions: 1) what are the general methodological features (study design, sample and related variables, intervention content and related variables, so forth) of immersive technology interventions targeting sexually victimized individuals, 2) to what extent immersive technology interventions targeting sexually victimized individuals are promising in terms of methodological outcomes (such as feasibility, safety, so forth), and 3) to what extent the immersive technology interventions have been effective in addressing biopsychosocial outcomes in sexually victimized individuals.

Towards the implementation of immersive technology in construction – a SWOT Analysis

Whilst research of immersive technology has been growing, substantial efforts thus far have been scattered. Conflicting ideas and arguments from scholars provoke uncertainty and questions about the validity of these outputs in fostering more extensive implementation of immersive technology in the construction industry. Consequently, the direction for further developments in research remains unclear. This study aims to identify the status quo of immersive technology adoption in construction. A systematic review with thematic analysis was conducted. Common themes and concerns about the use of immersive technology in the construction are classified under the framework of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). The results indicate that whilst ‘strengths’ and ‘opportunities’ display a broad array of applications and functions that are derived from real benefits, a substantial amount of opportunities mentioned are driven by optimism. Alternatively, the results from ‘weaknesses’ and ‘opportunities’ identify several limitations involved in the uptake of immersive technology in the construction industry. Findings of this study provide vision that can help direct resources to those measures that can best meet the needs of construction industry. It is suggested that future resources are better to be put on integration with proven effective systems like Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. New developments should due consider the real demand of the industry.
