The deformation behavior of extruded Mg alloys with a Ca or Nd addition (up to 0.5 wt.%) is addressed with respect to a specified thermo-mechanical treatment, realized by pre-compression and subsequent heat treatment at intermediate temperature. The twinning–detwinning process is discussed with respect to the initial texture and applied heat treatment. Isothermal aging leads to precipitation and segregation along twin boundaries and dislocations in the pre-compressed Mg alloys, and, thus, variation in the mobility of twin boundaries (TB) is observed in the investigated alloys. Despite individual scenarios of TB mobility in particular grains, in general, the same TB mobility modes are observed in the alloys independently on Ca or Nd alloying. The microstructure development, particularly the twin volume fraction and the mobility of tensile {10-12} twin boundaries, is tracked using scanning electron microscopy, including backscattered electron (BSE) imaging and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mapping.

Aging increases the yield strength of aged Mg-Zn alloys. The effect of aging on the stress required for twinning is examined using in-situ transmission based synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The as extruded material was aged at variety of temperatures for different times. It is found that increasing sample diameter (thickness) results in peak broadening. The data are analysed to establish the evolution of twin volume fraction with stress. Results indicated an increase in twinning stress at 10% twin volume fraction in aged samples in comparison with non-aged condition. The investigation showed a strong relation between the macroscopic yield stress and the twinning stress (at 10% twin volume fraction).

A textured Mg-Al-Zn alloy rolled plate was solution treated and aged at 320 oC for 2 h and 116 h, respectively. Afterwards, the three conditions were compressed at room temperature along the transverse direction to activate {110} twinning. Ageing treatments were observed to strengthen the alloy in relation to the solution-treated condition. This has been mainly attributed to the restricted lateral growth of twins in the presence of particles and thus to the additional stress required for twin growth. Accordingly, a slightly reduced twin volume fraction, but an increased number of smaller twins was observed after compression in the aged samples.
