In this paper, we consider the effect of cold rolling and hydrogen alloying on the formation of twin boundaries of the corrosion resistance of austenitic steel 01Cr17Ni13Mo3. Using the method of transmission electronic microscopy, microdiffraction patterns were obtained. The analysis of microdiffraction patterns indicates the formation of a developed grain-subgrain structure with small-angle and large-angle misorientation. The structure has a high dislocation density, deformation twins and localized shift bands. It was established that plastic deformation by flat rolling to ε = 90 % at room temperature does not contribute to the appearance of a noticeable amount of α' and ε-martensite. At the temperature of liquid nitrogen, the samples were found to form a small fraction of the α'-martensite phase. Such a small amount of martensite can contribute to steel strengthening, and a decrease in the rolling temperature will lead to an increase in the strength properties of steel. It was detected that the density of twin boundaries under the decrease in the rolling temperature but with the same intensity of hydrogen saturation is significantly higher. A noticeable reduction in the width of the twin lamellas was revealed.

Abstract The magnetic flux pinning capabilities of YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) coated conductors (CCs) vary strongly between different regions of the magnetic field-temperature (H-T) diagram and with the orientation of the magnetic field (θ). Here, we determine the optimal pinning landscape for a given H-T region by investigating the critical current density Jc(H,θ,T) in the 5-77 K temperature range, from self-field to very high magnetic fields (35 T). Our systematic analysis reveals the best directions to target to artificially engineer CCs in any region of interest. In solution-derived nanocomposites, we identify the relevance of coexisting high amounts of short stacking faults, Cu-O vacancy clusters and segmentation of twin boundaries, in combination with nanoparticles, for enhanced pinning performance at very high magnetic fields and low temperatures. Moreover, we demonstrate that twin boundaries preserve a high pinning energy in thick YBCO films, which is beneficial for the pinning performance at high magnetic fields and high temperatures.

The hot deformation characteristics of a GH4169 superalloy are investigated at the temperature and strain rate ranges of 1193–1313 K and 0.01–1 s−1, respectively, through Gleeble-3500 simulator. The hot deformed microstructures are analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technology. The effects of deformation parameters on the features of flow curves and annealing twins are discussed in detail. It is found that the shapes of flow curves are greatly affected by the deformation temperature. Broad peaks appear at low deformation temperatures or high strain rates. In addition, the evolution of annealing twins is significantly sensitive to the deformation degree, temperature, and strain rate. The fraction of annealing twins first decreases and then rises with the added deformation degree. This is because the initial annealing twin characters disappear at the relatively small strains, while the annealing twins rapidly generate with the growth of dynamic recrystallized grains during the subsequent hot deformation. The fraction of annealing twins is relatively high when the deformation temperature is high or the strain rate is low. In addition, the important role of annealing twins on dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behaviors are elucidated. The obvious bulging at initial twin boundaries, and the coherency of annealing twin boundaries with dynamic recrystallized grain boundaries, indicates that annealing twins can motivate the DRX nucleation during the hot deformation.

AbstractFracture arising from cracks nucleating and propagating along twin boundaries is commonly observed in metals that exhibit twinning as a plastic deformation mechanism. This phenomenon affects the failure of macroscopic mechanical components, but it is not fully understood. We present simulations in which a continuum model for discrete twins and a cohesive zone model are coupled to aid the understanding of fracture at twin boundaries. The interaction between different twin systems is modelled using a local term that depends on the continuum twin variables. Simulations reveal that the resolved shear stress necessary for an incident twin to propagate through a barrier twin can be up to eight times the resolved shear stress for twin nucleation. Interface elements are used at the interfaces between all bulk elements to simulate arbitrary intragranular cracks. An algorithm to detect twin interfaces is developed and their strength has been calibrated to give good agreement with the experimentally observed fracture path. The elasto-plastic deformation induced by discrete twins is modelled using the crystal plasticity finite element method and the stress induced by twin tips is captured. The tensile stress caused by the tip of an incident twin on a barrier twin is sufficient to nucleate a crack. A typical staircase fracture path, with cracks propagating along the twin interfaces, is reproduced only if the strength of the twin interfaces is decreased to about one-third of the strength of the bulk material. This model can be used to help understand fracture caused by the activation of multiple twin systems in different materials.
