Tectonic influence on axial-transverse sediment routing in the Denver Basin

ABSTRACT Detrital zircon U-Pb and (U-Th)/He ages from latest Cretaceous–Eocene strata of the Denver Basin provide novel insights into evolving sediment sourcing, recycling, and dispersal patterns during deposition in an intracontinental foreland basin. In total, 2464 U-Pb and 78 (U-Th)/He analyses of detrital zircons from 21 sandstone samples are presented from outcrop and drill core in the proximal and distal portions of the Denver Basin. Upper Cretaceous samples that predate uplift of the southern Front Range during the Laramide orogeny (Pierre Shale, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Laramie Formation) contain prominent Late Cretaceous (84–77 Ma), Jurassic (169–163 Ma), and Proterozoic (1.69–1.68 Ga) U-Pb ages, along with less abundant Paleozoic through Archean zircon grain ages. These grain ages are consistent with sources in the western U.S. Cordillera, including the Mesozoic Cordilleran magmatic arc and Yavapai-Mazatzal basement, with lesser contributions of Grenville and Appalachian zircon recycled from older sedimentary sequences. Mesozoic zircon (U-Th)/He ages confirm Cordilleran sources and/or recycling from the Sevier orogenic hinterland. Five of the 11 samples from syn-Laramide basin fill (latest Cretaceous–Paleocene D1 Sequence) and all five samples from the overlying Eocene D2 Sequence are dominated by 1.1–1.05 Ga zircon ages that are interpreted to reflect local derivation from the ca. 1.1 Ga Pikes Peak batholith. Corresponding late Mesoproterozoic to early Neoproterozoic zircon (U-Th)/He ages are consistent with local sourcing from the southern Front Range that underwent limited Mesozoic–Cenozoic unroofing. The other six samples from the D1 Sequence yielded detrital zircon U-Pb ages similar to pre-Laramide units, with major U-Pb age peaks at ca. 1.7 and 1.4 Ga but lacking the 1.1 Ga age peak found in the other syn-Laramide samples. One of these samples yielded abundant Mesozoic and Paleozoic (U-Th)/He ages, including prominent Early and Late Cretaceous peaks. We propose that fill of the Denver Basin represents the interplay between locally derived sediment delivered by transverse drainages that emanated from the southern Front Range and a previously unrecognized, possibly extraregional, axial-fluvial system. Transverse alluvial-fluvial fans, preserved in proximal basin fill, record progressive unroofing of southern Front Range basement during D1 and D2 Sequence deposition. Deposits of the upper and lower D1 Sequence across the basin were derived from these fans that emanated from the southern Front Range. However, the finer-grained, middle portion of the D1 Sequence that spans the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary was deposited by both transverse (proximal basin fill) and axial (distal basin fill) fluvial systems that exhibit contrasting provenance signatures. Although both tectonic and climatic controls likely influenced the stratigraphic development of the Denver Basin, the migration of locally derived fans toward and then away from the thrust front suggests that uplift of the southern Front Range may have peaked at approximately the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.

Fault Planes Materials Fill Characteristics, UAE

Abu Dhabi subsurface fault populations triggered basin system in diverse directions, because of their significant role as fluid pathways. Studying fault infill materials, fault geometries, zone architecture and sealing properties from outcrops as analogues to the subsurface of Abu Dhabi, and combining these with well data and cores are the main objectives of this paper. The fault core around the fault plane and in areas of overlap between fault segments and around the fault tip include slip surfaces and deformed rocks such as fault gouge, breccia, and lenses of host rock, shale smear, salt flux and diagenetic features. Structural geometry of the fault zone architecture and fault plane infill is mainly based on the competency contrast of the materials, that are behaving in ductile or in a brittle manner, which are distributed in the subsurface of Abu Dhabi sedimentary sequences with variable thicknesses. Brittleness is producing lenses, breccia and gouge, while, ductile intervals (principally shales and salt), evolved in smear and flux. The fault and fractures are behaving in a sealy or leaky ways is mainly dependent on the percentage of these materials in the fault deformation zone. The reservoir sections distancing from shale and salt layers are affected by diagenetic impact of the carbonates filling fault zones by recrystallized calcite and dolomite. Musandam area, Ras Al Khaima (RAK), and Jabal Hafit (JH) on the northeast- and eastern-side of the UAE represents good surface analogues for studying fault materials infill characteristics. To approach this, several samples, picked from fault planes, were analysed. NW-trending faults system show more dominant calcite, dolomite, anhydrites and those closer to salt and shale intervals are showing smearing of the ductile infill. The other linked segments and transfer faults of other directions are represented by a lesser percentage of infill. In areas of gravitational tectonics, the decollement ductile interval is intruded in differently oriented open fractures. The studied outcrops of the offshore salt islands and onshore Jabal Al Dhanna (JD) showing salt flux in the surrounding layers that intruded by the salt. The fractures and faults of the surrounding layers and the embedment insoluble layers are highly deformed and showing nearly total seal. As the salt behaving in an isotropic manner, the deformation can be measured clearly by its impact on the surrounding and embedment's insoluble rocks. The faults/fractures behaviour is vicious in migrating hydrocarbons, production enhancement and hydraulic fracturing propagation.

Cenozoic evolution of the Campbell Plateau, Subantarctic New Zealand: Insights from sub-bottom profile data

<p>The Campbell Plateau represents ~30% of the submerged continent of Zealandia and represents part of the Gondwana super-continent that began to break-up ~98Ma. The focus of this MSc thesis is to use sub-bottom, profile data collected in 2017 and 2018 from Campbell Plateau to improve our understanding of the Cenozoic evolution of the region. The sub-bottom profiles show a rugged basement overlain by a variety of sedimentary sequences and subsurface features such as volcanoes, onlap, and downlap surfaces as well as multiple unconformities that can be traced throughout the Cenozoic (65Ma). The sub-bottom profiles are compared to 2 drill cores; Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) site 1120 on the eastern side of the plateau and Deep Sea Drilling Program (DSDP) site 277 in the south. These drill cores indicate that the lithology from the Cretaceous onwards is predominantly biogenic calcareous sandstone and mudstone, which changes to nannofossil-rich oozes in the Miocene and foraminiferal oozes and nannofossil oozes dated early to late Pleistocene. The northern plateau appears to be relatively quiescent with thin, relatively uniform strata, only influenced by small reverse faults. Sedimentary deposits such as wedges and contourites are also evident in the central and north-western part of the study area. The southern plateau appears to be have been highly dynamic with onlap/downlap surfaces, interpreted as current scours, and erosional surfaces. There is a plateau-wide unconformity during the Pliocene, as derived from the nannofossils of the ODP1120 drill core, which appears to have been a large-scale erosional event. The Southern Ocean circulation, dominated by Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the Subtropical Front, and local wind-driven currents, are the main drivers of these lithological changes and plateau-wide sedimentological structures. Previous interpretations of the sub-surface structure of the plateau are seen to be invalid in relation to this study, with the sub-surface seen to be relatively undeformed with only minor reverse faulting present. Areas of possible uplifted basement seen near Campbell Island also indicate that the Campbell Plateau has been through substantial erosion and deformation since its’ separation from Gondwana ~98Ma and movement to its modern-day position.</p>

Glacio-lacustrine sedimentation in newly discovered paleo-lakes, Westland, New Zealand

<p>The remnant effects of Quaternary glaciation dominate the geomorphology of South Westland, New Zealand. Well-constrained glaciogenic records for the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) (~MIS 2) show ice to have extended significant distances across the Westland piedmont, becoming tidewater calving in places. Despite clear evidence for glacial advance, landscape response to glacial retreat remains relatively poorly understood, with few described sedimentary sequences clearly recording deglaciation processes. A 240-metre thick glacio-lacustrine sedimentary sequence intercepted by drilling in the Whataroa Valley (DFDP-2) provides the first compelling evidence of pro-glacial lake formation in response to glacial retreat in Westland. To understand the vertical facies succession observed in this sequence, two glacio-lacustrine facies schemes and depositional models were developed. To do this, previously unmapped glacio-lacustrine sedimentary sequences in the Westland region underwent detailed sedimentological analysis to identify key glacio-lacustrine facies. In the Waitangitaona and Arahura river valleys, the presence of glacio-lacustrine sequences is also used to mark paleo-lake formation in the respective catchments. Using the facies scheme and depositional models, together with 14C chronology and sedimentological analysis, a series of conclusions are developed from the DFDP-2 sequence: 1) Deposition occurred in an over-deepened glacial trough, with the sequence consisting of a basal diamictite, overlain by a ~ 140-metre interval of lacustrine siltstones and sandstones. 2) The lower ~ 180-metres of sediment accumulated in 659 ± 151 yrs between 16609 ± 151 and 15994 ± 94 cal. yr BP, as the depositional environment at the drill-site evolved from an ice contact to an ice distal lacustrine setting. 3) Extremely rapid sedimentation rates, as well as high lake levels allowed the preservation of glacially over-steepened bedrock slopes beneath the Whataroa Valley. The formation of a previously unknown, ~190 km2 pro-glacial lake on the Whataroa piedmont is inferred from the DFDP-2 sequence, with lake formation causing accelerated glacial retreat from the late LGM maxima. The presence of several catchments with comparable piedmont geometry suggests pro-glacial lake formation may have been a common response to glacial retreat in Westland. For a period, pro-glacial lakes may have been a significant transitory feature on the Westland landscape.</p>

Mississippian southern Laurentia tuffs came from a northern Gondwana arc

A Paleozoic arc that formed by southward subduction of the Rheic oceanic plate beneath northern Gondwana has long been inferred, but its history and geochemical signatures remain poorly understood. New U-Pb ages, juvenile εHf signatures, and trace-element composition data of young zircons from tuffs at two southern Laurentia sites indicate their derivation from a continental arc that was active from ca. 328 to ca. 317 Ma and permit correlation of sedimentary sequences 800 km apart in southern Laurentia. These include the Stanley tuffs in the Ouachita Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma and southwestern Arkansas and the newly discovered Barnett tuff in the subsurface of the Midland Basin in west Texas (USA). The Barnett tuff has a zircon chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry U-Pb date of 327.8 ± 0.8 Ma, similar to the oldest Stanley tuff in the Ouachita Mountains. Zircon Hf isotope depleted mantle model ages further suggest that the source was a continental arc on basement with both Grenville and Pan-African affinities, pointing to northern Gondwana or peri-Gondwana terranes. The new data link the tuffs to granitoids (326 Ma) of the Maya block in southern Mexico, which was part of northern Gondwana. Correlation of the Stanley-Barnett tuffs across southern Laurentia suggests the likely presence of Mississippian tuffs over a broad region in southern Laurentia, and their usefulness for constraining absolute ages of basin fills and characterizing the Gondwanan arc.
