ABSTRACT Objective: There is still no consensus as to the treatment options for thoracolumbar burst fractures, although these fractures are widely described in the literature. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of percutaneous instrumentation without arthrodesis as a method of fixation of these lesions. Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study evaluated 16 patients by measuring regional kyphosis using the Cobb method and the scores for quality of life and return to work (Oswestry Disability Index, VAS, SF-36 and Denis). Results: Six months after surgical treatment, 62.5% of all patients showed minimal disability according to the Oswestry Disability Index, maintenance of regional kyphosis correction and no synthesis failure. Conclusions: The clinical and radiological outcomes of the study suggest that minimally invasive fixation is indicated for the treatment of thoracolumbar burst fractures. ABSTRACT Objective To evaluate the immediate correction capacity of the Wood-Chêneau-Rigo brace (WCR), produced using digital technological resources and robotic engineering, in primary and secondary curves of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Methods A retrospective study was conducted of 138 patients with a diagnosis of AIS and who received a WCR brace from a laboratory that makes orthoses and orthopedic prostheses between 2019 and 2021. These individuals were submitted to an independent analysis of the radiographic parameters by a single researcher, the main outcome of which was the standardized measurement of the main and secondary curves using the Cobb method. The radiographs analyzed were performed in orthostasis before and immediately after the adaptation of the brace on the patient. The correction capacity was calculated as the ratio of the difference between the pre- and post-brace curves to the pre-brace curve. Results The mean correction with the WCR was 48.4% for the main curve and 41.0% for the secondary curve. The level of correction of the main curve was significantly higher in patients with a main curve with the apex of convexity in the thoracolumbar region (p = 0.004), especially in the left thoracolumbar region (p = 0.010); curves of magnitude between 10º and 24.9º (p <0.001); and curves classified as simple (p <0.001). Conclusion The use of the WCR, which is produced using modern technological resources, was effective in the immediate correction of AIS. Long-term studies on this new modality of conservative scoliosis treatment are necessary. Level of evidence III; Retrospective study.

Objectives: The present study evaluated the inter-rater and intra-rater validity and reliability of posturography by Kinovea software to measure the thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis. Methods: Eighteen subjects (10 females & 8 males) referring for radiographic imaging were included in this cross-sectional study. For evaluating the validity, the thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis were measured according to the Cobb method and Kinovea in standing position. The inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of Kinovea were tested by 3 evaluators and one expert evaluator, respectively. Results: Pearson correlation coefficient data suggested that the validity of measuring the thoracic kyphosis depends on the evaluator’s expertise. Besides, the correlation was not significant in measuring the lumbar lordosis angle (P>0.05). The inter-rater and intra-rater repeatability revealed that the correlation was significant in all angles by the intraclass correlation coefficient (P<0.001). Discussion: Posturography by Kinovea, as a noninvasive method presents an excellent inter-rater and intra-rater repeatability for measuring thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis. This reliable method is simple, efficient, and inexpensive.

Nanofibrillated films based on TEMPO-oxidized cotton linters were applied to reduce the hydrophilic properties of paper. For this purpose, aqueous dispersions of nanofibrillated cellulose of different composition: 1 and 3% of nanofibrillated cellulose, up to 13% of CaCO3 and/or Al(OH)3, up to 20% of propane-1,2-diol (glycol), and up to 21% of TEMPO-oxidized cotton linters were coated on the model paper, without additional adhesive. The pristine model paper and papers coated with nanofibrillated cellulose-based composite films were characterized in terms of water absorptiveness by COBB method and water drop contact angle measurements. The surface appearance was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface chemistry by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform and attenuated total reflection (ATR-FTIR). Additionally, optical properties, i.e. measurement of reflection curves and CIE degrees of whiteness, were determined according to appropriate standards. For all papers coated with nanofibrillated cellulose-based films, depending on the composition of the dispersions, a decrease in sorption properties was achieved, without changes in optical properties and surface morphology of the paper compared to the pristine paper.

This retrospective chart review was undertaken to investigate the role of chiropractic intervention for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Ten cases of patients with AIS, mean age 13.3 years, undergoing chiropractic adjustment were retrospectively evaluated. Chart review was performed to extract age, medical history and treatment intervention. The magnitude of scoliosis was quantified using the Cobb method on standing radiographs. A comparison of the measurements from pre- and post-treatment radiographs revealed that Cobb angle reduced from average 29.7° down to average 23.4° (average 21.2% correction). Improvements in spinal morphologies were observed in most curves (64%, n=9/14) and curve stabilization in the rest (36%, n=5/14). A better correction was obtained in cases of mild and moderate AIS. In terms of stabilizing progression (≤5o curve progression) or correcting curvatures (≥6° reduction), radiological changes were observed in all patients.

Abstract Background This research analysed discrepancies between the angle of trunk rotation (ATR) and the Cobb angle, in order to study if the commonly used 7° cut-off threshold for ATR helps diagnose scoliosis. In early stadia of scoliosis in children, ATR and the Cobb angle often disagree, increasing the risk of a false diagnosis: while the former does not suggest scoliosis, the latter does. Methods The study analysed ATR clinical parameters and the Cobb angle in the X-ray pictures of 117 (23 boys and 94 girls, aged 6–17 years) children who had not yet started treatment and whose X-ray pictures showed the Cobb angle of at least 10°, indicating idiopathic scoliosis. The degrees of lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis were measured using the Saunders inclinometer, and back asymmetry was measured with Adam’s forward bend test using the Bunnell scoliometer. In the X-ray pictures, the curvature angle was plotted according to the Cobb method. The patients were stratified based on their age, and their ATRs and Cobb angles were compared. Results Although all the children had the Cobb angle over 10°, in 69 out of 117 (59%), ATR was below 7%. So, using the 7° cut-off threshold rule, scoliosis would not be diagnosed in those children. This shows that the two tests often disagree, suggesting that the 7° cut-off threshold or ATR is ineffective in diagnosing scoliosis. Conclusions To improve the method for diagnosing scoliosis based on ATR, consideration should be given to lowering the 7° ATR cut-off threshold.

Introduction: Scoliosis is a health problem that causes a side-to-side curvature in the spine. The curvature may have an “S” or “C” shape. To evaluate scoliosis, the Cobb angle has been commonly used. However, digital image processing allows the Cobb angle to be obtained easily and quickly, several researchers have determined that Cobb angle contains high variations (errors) in the measurements. Therefore, a more reproducible computer aided-method to evaluate scoliosis is presented.Material and Methods: Several polynomial curves were fitted to the spine curvature (4th to 8th order) of thirty plain films of scoliosis patients to obtain the Curvature-Length of the spine. Each plain film was evaluated by 3 physician observers. Curvature was measured twice using the Cobb method and the proposed Curvature-Length Technique (CLT). Data were analyzed by a paired-sample Student t-test and Pearson correlation method using SPSS Statistics 25.Results: The curve of 7th order polynomial had the best fit on the spine curvature and was also used for our proposed method (CLT) obtaining a significant positive correlation when compared to Cobb measurements (r=0.863, P<0.001). The Intraclass Correlation (ICC) was between 0.863 and 0.948 for Cobb method and0.974 to 0.984 for CLT method. In addition, mean measurement of the inter-observer COV (Coefficient of Variation) for Cobb method was of 0.185, that was significantly greater than the obtained with CLT method of 0.155, this means that CLT method is 16.2% more repeatable than Cobb Method.Conclusion: Based on results, it was concluded that CLT method is more reproducible than the Cobb method for measuring spinal curvature.

ABSTRACT Objective: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is characterized by rotational and lateral deformity of the spine. The measurement of vertebral rotation is important for prognosis and treatment. Our objective was to evaluate whether the Nash-Moe method can be used to measure axial deformity correction with surgical treatment using the rod derotation maneuver at both the apex and extremities of the deformity in patients with AIS. Methods: Rotation was assessed using the Nash and Moe criteria, on preoperative and postoperative radiographs. We also evaluated the severity on the coronal plane using the Cobb method, ratio of correction achieved, screw density, and number of vertebrae involved in the instrumentation. Results: The Cobb method correction average was 54.8%. When we disregarded vertebrae that presented preoperative Nash-Moe grade 0, the average measurable correction was 54.5% in the first non-instrumented vertebra above, 69.2% in the first instrumented vertebra, 32.2% in the apical vertebra, 36.8% in the last instrumented vertebra, and 30% in the first non-instrumented vertebra below. In our study, 32.14% of the patients presented a measurable correction in the apical vertebra. Conclusion: On the axial plane, correction can be satisfactorily evaluated using the Nash-Moe method.
