Purpose The aim of this paper is to propose the model for analyzing the electromagnetic performances of permanent magnet vernier machines (PMVMs) under healthy and faulty conditions. Design/methodology/approach The model uses interconnected reluctance network formed based on the geometrical approximations to predict magnetic performances of the machine. The network consists of several types of reluctances for modeling different parts of machine. Applying Kirchhoffs laws in the network and the machine windings, magnetic and electrical equations are obtained, respectively. To construct the model system of equations, the electrical equation is converted into algebraic form by using the trapezoidal technique. Moreover, the system of equations must be solved by Newton–Raphson method in each step-time because of considering the core saturation effect. Findings The proposed model is developed based on the modified magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) method, in which the number of flux paths in different parts of the machine can be arbitrary selected. The saturation effect, skewed slots, the desired machine geometrical parameters and various winding arrangements are included in the proposed model; therefore, it can evaluate the time and space harmonics in modeling the PMVMs. Furthermore, a pattern for inter-turn fault detection is extracted from the stator current spectrum. Finally, 2 D-finite element method (FEM) and 3 D-FEM analysis are carried out to evaluate and verify the results of the proposed MEC model. Originality/value Generally, the element numbers have important role in modeling the machine and calculating its performance. Hence, the proposed MEC model’s capability to choose desired number of flux paths is advantage of this paper. Moreover, the developed MEC can be used for analyzing several electrical machines, including other types of vernier machines, with simple modification.

The study’s purpose was to develop and validate Electronic Portal Imaging Device (EPID)-based dosimetry for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Radiation Therapy (SRT) patient-specific Quality Assurance (QA). The co-operation between extended Source-to-Imager Distance (SID) to reduce the saturation effect and simplify the EPID-based dosimetry model was used to perform patient-specific QA in SRS and SRT plans. The four parameters were included for converting the image to dose at depth 10 cm; dose-response linearity with MU, beam profile correction, collimator scatter and water kernel. The model accuracy was validated with 10 SRS/SRT plans. The traditional diode arrays with MapCHECK were also used to perform patient-specific QA for assuring model accuracy. The 150 cm-SID was found a possibility to reduce the saturation effect. The result of model accuracy was found good agreement between our EPID-based dosimetry and TPS calculation with GPR more than 98% for gamma criteria of 3%/3 mm, more than 95% for gamma criteria of 2%/2 mm, and the results related to the measurement with MapCHECK. This study demonstrated the method to perform SRT and SRT patient-specific QA using EPID-based dosimetry in the FFF beam by co-operating between the extended SID that can reduce the saturation effect and estimate the planar dose distribution with the in-house model.

Background: Previous studies had revealed that Body Mass Index (BMI) positively affected Bone Mineral Density (BMD). However, an excessively high BMI was detrimental to health, especially for the elderly. Moreover, it was elusive how much BMI was most beneficial for BMD in older adults to maintain.Objective: To investigate whether there was a BMI saturation effect value that existed to maintain optimal BMD.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using the datasets of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2006, 2007–2008, 2009–2010, 2013–2014, and 2017–2018. After adjusting for covariates, an analysis of the association between BMI and BMD in different femoral regions (Total femur, Femoral neck, Trochanter, Intertrochanter, and Ward's triangle) and lumbar spine regions (Total spine, L1, L2, L3, and L4) in the whole population was performed using the multivariate linear regression models, smoothing curve fitting, and saturation effects analysis models. Then, subgroup analyses were performed according to gender, age, and race.Results: A total of 10,910 participants (5,654 males and 5,256 females) over 50 years were enrolled in this population-based study. Multivariate linear regression analyses in the population older than 50 years showed that BMI was positively associated with femoral BMD and lumbar spine BMD (P < 0.001, respectively). Smoothing curve fitting showed that the relationship between BMI and BMD was not simply linear and that a saturation value existed. The saturation effect analysis showed that the BMI saturation value was 26.13 (kg/m2) in the total femur, 26.82 (kg/m2) in the total spine, and showed site-specificity in L1 (31.90 kg/m2) and L2 (30.89 kg/m2). The saturation values were consistent with the whole participants in males, while there was high variability in the females. BMI saturation values remained present in subgroup analyses by age and race, showing specificity in some age (60–70 years old) groups and in some races.Conclusions: Our study showed a saturation value association between BMI and BMD for people over 50 years old. Keeping the BMI in the slightly overweight value (around 26 kg/m2) might reduce other adverse effects while obtaining optimal BMD.
