Socio-environmental vulnerability as a basis for coastal management in the municipality of Paracuru - CearáA B S T R A C TGeography makes an important role when there are works that try to relate society and nature, establishing forms (or variables) to qualify the elements that make up the landscape. In this work, the objective was to apply the classification of socio-environmental vulnerability adapted from Medeiros and Souza (2016), with contributions from Milanezi and Pereira (2016), as a way to contribute to the coastal management of Paracuru-Ceará. Paracuru is a coastal municipality, where there are several environments and three State Conservation Units located on the Curu River and on the Paracuru dunes. For the analysis, the map of environmental vulnerability (generated from the maps of geoenvironmental units and of use and occupation) and social vulnerability was superimposed, using 17 variables included in the calculation of the index organized by census sectors, the smallest sample unit. It was observed stretches of high socio-environmental vulnerability in the sector in the APA of the Curu River, in the locality of Santa Rita, with an intersection area of 2.3 km², in the urban headquarters, places called plateau da barra and secondary carnaubinha 3.1 km² intersection and sector 16, in the localities of Muriti, Córrego do Curu and Pedrinhas, with an intersection of approximately 800 m². In the dunes, the overlap was predominant of high environmental vulnerability and medium - high social vulnerability. It is hoped that the information can serve as a basis for indicating the paths that management should follow to achieve sustainability. Keywords: Landscape, socio-environmental vulnerability, coastal planning.

This qualitative study investigates a cohort of Zhuang university students’ perceptions of their ethnicity, and the way they construct and negotiate their ethnic identity as they migrate from an inland, ethnic, autonomous province to study in an eastern, coastal municipality. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that the construction of ethnic Zhuang identity is influenced by the interplay between institutional power, sociocultural environment and individual agency. Specifically, participants show three divergent patterns of ethnic identification, namely: receivers, who readily accept their official ethnic classification but have limited ethnic awareness; constructors, who have strong ethnic awareness and strive for ethnic language transmission and heritage culture protection; and utilizers, who are keen on the instrumental values brought by their ethnicity. It is further found that the Zhuang language does not facilitate or strengthen ethnic Zhuang identification due to differences among language varieties.

Abstract. The Philippines is surrounded by hundreds of kilometers of shorelines wherein communities are increasing and coastal development is emerging fast. Masinloc, Zambales is a coastal municipality wherein 11 out of 13 barangays are situated near the coast which are always affected by climate-induced hazards. The objectives of this study were to assess and validate the climate-induced hazards occurring in Masinloc and assessed the vulnerability of the coastal municipality to these various hazards. Detailed profiling was done to identify hazards of the study area. Vulnerability maps were generated and results revealed that flooding, storm surge and landslide were the most prominent hazards in the area. Results of the vulnerability assessment revealed that Masinloc was moderately vulnerable to storm surge and flooding due to low exposure and sensitivity to flooding and storm surge while its adaptive capacity was very high. Majority of settlements, agricultural lands and population are affected by these hazards. Priority programs to reduce the sensitivity and exposure to storm surge and flooding should be carried out.

A large chikungunya outbreak is ongoing in Italy, with a main cluster in the Anzio coastal municipality. With preliminary epidemiological data, and a transmission model using mosquito abundance and biting rates, we estimated the basic reproduction number R0 at 2.07 (95% credible interval: 1.47–2.59) and the first case importation between 21 May and 18 June 2017. Outbreak risk was higher in coastal/rural sites than urban ones. Novel transmission foci could occur up to mid-November.

Environmental Vulnerability in Coastal Zone of the Municipality of Salvaterra Marajo Island – PA, in Section Between Output Paracauari River and Tapariuaçu Tip ABSTRACTWhereas in the coastal municipality of Salvaterra-PA in the stretch that extends from the mouth to the tip of Paracauari Tapariuaçu, the current dynamics of the unit low plateau is marked by erosion, related to the potential energy relief and how to use and human occupation of this unit, and that the dynamics of dune and beach units are also determined mainly by the use forms and the human occupation, related to commercial and tourism activity, this study aimed to analyze the indicators of environmental vulnerability identified in the coastal municipality of Salvaterra, on the section considered, and classify them according to degree of environmental vulnerability. This analysis enabled us to realize that the edge of Salvaterra, a high degree of environmental vulnerability in the northern sector and a medium degree of environmental vulnerability in central and southern sectors. Keywords: Coastline; environmental vulnerability; use and occupation.
