Although A. angustifolia is currently economically unimportant, the worldwide trend of conservation through the sustainable use of natural resources together with an intense discussion of governmental regulations and the recent results of genetic breeding started in the 1970s are delivering promising perspectives for a new wave of plantations. This study aimed to determine optimal pruning strategies by evaluating the diameter and height growth of young A. angustifolia trees as affected by different pruning intensities. Pruning quality in terms of occlusion and defect-core size were also investigated. At the age of 6 years, the pruning experiment was started by conducting six different pruning intensities, named after the number of whorls left after pruning (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8), as well as unpruned (U) trees as a control. From the results obtained in the present study, it was concluded that pruning intensity had a significant negative effect on the growth of young A. angustifolia trees. Diameter was more affected than height growth. Pruning young A. angustifolia trees for knotty-free timber production must be conducted keeping 8 whorls after the intervention if no negative effect in current annual increment in diameter is to be observed when compared to unpruned trees. A defect core of 15 cm seems to be a feasible target for the species regarding optimal pruning intensity to avoid losses in diameter growth. This is strongly dependent on a fast occlusion process, which, in turn, is a result of a careful pruning technique.

Taking 1735 Pinus koraiensis knots in Mengjiagang Forest Farm plantations in Jiamusi City, Heilongjiang Province as the research object, a dynamic tree height, effective crown height, and crown base height growth model was developed using 349 screened knots. The Richards equation was selected as the basic model to develop a crown base height and effective crown height nonlinear mixed-effects model considering random tree-level effects. Model parameters were estimated with the non-liner mixed effect model (NLMIXED) Statistical Analysis System (SAS) module. The akaike information criterion (AIC), bayesian information criterion (BIC), −2 Log likelihood (−2LL), adjusted coefficient (Ra2), root mean square error (RMSE), and residual squared sum (RSS) values were used for the optimal model selection and performance evaluation. When tested with independent sample data, the mixed-effects model tree effects-considering outperformed the traditional model regarding their goodness of fit and validation; the two-parameter mixed-effects model outperformed the one-parameter model. Pinus koraiensis pruning times and intensities were calculated using the developed model. The difference between the effective crown and crown base heights was 1.01 m at the 15th year; thus, artificial pruning could occur. Initial pruning was performed with a 1.01 m intensity in the 15th year. Five pruning were required throughout the young forest period; the average pruning intensity was 1.46 m. The pruning interval did not differ extensively in the half-mature forest period, while the intensity decreased significantly. The final pruning intensity was only 0.34 m.

Microscopic bud dissection can be used to assess grapevine bud fruitfulness prior to winter pruning and long before actual bud fruitfulness can be measured in the vineyard the following spring. Bud dissections should be performed by qualified and trained personnel because inflorescence primordia are difficult to distinguish in some varieties. In the Puglia region, Southeastern Italy, in 2018 and 2019, potential fruitfulness using bud dissection and actual fruitfulness observed in the vineyard were compared for seventeen table grape varieties. The percentage of fertile buds, the number of inflorescence primordia (IP) per node, and the incidence of primary bud necrosis (PBN) were detected with bud dissection to be used either for managing winter pruning or for predicting yield during the successive season. The data were successively compared with fertile buds and actual bud fruitfulness observed in the vineyard during spring. The table grape varieties examined had similar values of fertile buds and fruitfulness both with bud dissection and in the vineyard. The application of longitudinal sections in bud dissections can be an alternative approach (or can be integrated into traditional cross sections) to distinguish IP in some difficult varieties, but the two techniques can be used together for more repeatable results. The bud dissection technique (with both cross and longitudinal sections) can provide useful insights for viticulturist to help guide winter pruning (intensity of pruning and number of canes) and to predict potential yield.

Abstract Jasmine (Jasminum sambac L.) is an evergreen shrub and very fragrant, which has a very importance in the perfume industry and its flowers are used in different religious and ceremonies. Training the shrubs for more yields of flowers and essential oil with horticultural improvement effects of pruning and amino acids may help gardeners to achieve more benefits. This study aimed to investigate the effects of pruning intensity (without pruning, 40, 60 or 75 cm above ground level) and foliar application of amino acids (without amino acids, tryptophan or glycine) on jasmine shrubs for promoting growth and reproductive growth and the content of essential oil. The results showed that plants with light pruning (75 cm) and foliar application of amino acids especially glycine had the best growth and yield, which means that plants were affected by the interactions of pruning level and application of amino acids.
