A reactive hot-melt resin (polyurethane) was used to manufacture Guadua composites with a certain flexibility, high processing speed, good initial rigidity, and high temperature performance. These composites can support a moderate tensile stress, allow for large strains at low stresses, and have a low density and a working temperature range of -40 °C and 110 °C. During the flexural test, bamboo composites with reactive polyurethane matrix do not break or fail during the test. A polyurethane-based reactive hot-melt resin was characterized by tensile tests, Shore hardness tests, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry. Besides, a composite material was made with Guadua fiber and polyester matrix, which had a greater strength in the test of tension and flexion, although it had a lower percentage of elongation than the composite material with reactive polyurethane. Guadua fiber can increase the strength by 266% of polyurethane matrix and 228% of polyester matrix.

This work includes the search for the development of a composite of a WPU (waterborne polyurethane), β-CD (β-Cyclodextrin), PZnO (zinc oxide particles), and the presence of CaCO3, to obtain new properties such as adhesion to multiple substrates of organic and inorganic origin. Therefore, a development sequence was proposed: Computational development: conformation of the polymeric matrix (with the intermediary polymers) and simulation of the interaction between β-CD and PZnO and Ca+2 and CO3-2 ions, as well as insertions in β-CD, computational simulations were carried out with the help of ACD LABS™ (free version) software and by molecular dynamics with GROMACS™. With the above, we were able to determine properties such as interfacial tensions, surface tensions, and contact angles, and degrees of solvation and stability in waterborne emulsions. Therefore, it is important to point out that one of the main contributions of this research proposal is that there are no studies that combine these materials.

AbstractNanocomposite modification has attracted much attention in improving properties of bio-based polymer coating material for coated fertilizer. Herein two comparable polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS), with eight poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and octaphenyl groups attached to the cage, respectively, were successfully incorporated into thin castor oil-based polyurethane coatings via in-situ polymerization on the urea surface. The nanostructure coatings are environmentally friendly, easy to prepare, and property-tunable. The results show that the vertex group of POSS had a pronounced influence on dispersion level and interaction between polyurethane and POSS that well-tuned the release pattern and period of coated urea, even at the coating rate as low as of 2 wt%. The liquid POSS with long and flexible PEG groups had better compatibility and dispersibility in polyurethane matrix than the solid POSS with rigid octaphenyl groups, as evidenced by SEM/EDS. The unique properties were resulted from the different extents of physical crosslinkings. This modification of bio-based polyurethane coating with POSS provided an alternative method of regulating and controlling the properties of coated fertilizer.
