Abstract Investigations of the operating parameters of a plasma-cathode switch based on a capillary discharge in helium and neon in the burst mode are presented. An increase in the efficiency of the switch is demonstrated when an additional preionization pulse is applied at a low pulse repetition frequency (5 kHz). The compression ratio of voltage pulses more than 300 is achieved at a pulse repetition frequencies less than 40 kHz.

Stepped-frequency waveform may be used to synthesize a wideband signal with several narrow-band pulses and achieve a high-resolution range profile without increasing the instantaneous bandwidth. Nevertheless, the conventional stepped-frequency waveform is Doppler sensitive, which greatly limits its application to moving targets. For this reason, this paper proposes a waveform design method using a staggered pulse repetition frequency to improve the Doppler tolerance effectively. First, a generalized echo model of the stepped-frequency waveform is constructed in order to analyze the Doppler sensitivity. Then, waveform design is carried out in the stepped-frequency waveform by using a staggered pulse repetition frequency so as to eliminate the high-order phase component that is caused by the target’s velocity. Further, the waveform design method is extended to the sparse stepped-frequency waveform, and we also propose corresponding methods for high-resolution range profile synthesis and motion compensation. Finally, experiments with electromagnetic data verify the high Doppler tolerance of the proposed waveform.

Based on the path encoding pulse compression teleology, a novel method for obtaining high-power microwave (HPM) pulse with ultrahigh repetition frequency is proposed in this paper. The mechanism of the path encoding pulse compression teleology is first introduced. And then, the obtained HPM pulse is analyzed. Theoretical analysis shows that the peak power of MW level and the repetition frequency of MHz level for the generated HPM pulse can be easily reached. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method for obtaining HPM pulse with ultrahigh repetition frequency characteristic, a HPM-obtaining experiment was carried out based on an S-band microwave source. The HPM pulses with the width of 1 ns, 2 ns, and 3 ns are studied, respectively. The measured results show that the HPM pulse with the power higher than 100 kW and the repetition frequency of 250 kHz at the frequency of 2.856 GHz is easily obtained. The repetition frequency of the generated HPM pulse can be easily changed. Because the pulse with the power higher than 100 kW and the repetition frequency of several hundreds of kHz is obtained for the first time, this type of pulse will have a broad prospect of application in the communication, radar, and electronic countermeasure fields. In addition, the effect experiment of interfering communication and control links was carried out by utilizing the ultrahigh repetition frequency characteristic of the generated HPM pulse. Also, the experiment results show the feasibility of this pulse for interfering the communication and control links.

In this article are analyzed scientific reports in a field of marine mammals echolocations, including data of their sounding impulses with repetition frequency significantly more, that need for definition of distance to objects of hunting. The interrelation between the increased repetition frequencies of impulses and types of subjects of hunting is established. Following frequencies of such impulses types and of related objects of hunting are presented in a table view.
