To date, the exact role of specific Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in regulating immune reactivity to metallic byproducts of orthopedic implants has not been fully clarified. In light of the situation, our objective in this investigation was to assess the expression levels of surface TLRs after metallic particle and ion exposure in an established animal model. Ten female BALB/c mice in each group received intra-articular injections of phosphate buffer (PBS) (control), metallic particles (MP), and metallic ions (MI), respectively. Seven days later, immunohistochemical staining was undertaken in the synovial layer of the murine knee joints using anti-TLR 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 polyclonal antibodies. In addition to increased cellular infiltrates and a hyperplastic synovial membrane, the MP group showed significantly elevated TLR expression compared to the control group and had higher TLR 1-, 4-, and 6-positive cells than the MI group (p < 0.0167). TLR 4- and TLR 6-positive cells were significantly augmented for the MI group compared to the control group (p < 0.0167). Additionally, greenish corrosion particles found in the necrotic tissue suggested that metallic particles might release a certain level of locally toxic metallic ions in vivo.

A conductive metallic particle in a gas-insulated metal-enclosed system can charge through conduction or induction and move between electrodes or on insulating surfaces, which may lead to breakdown and flashover. The charge on the metallic particle and the charging time vary depending on the spatial electric field intensity, the particle shape, and the electrode surface coating. The charged metallic particle can move between the electrodes under the influence of the spatial electric field, and it can discharge and become electrically conductive when colliding with the electrodes, thus changing its charge. This process and its factors are mainly affected by the coating condition of the colliding electrode. In addition, the interface characteristics affect the particle when it is near the insulator. The charge transition process also changes due to the electric field strength and the particle charging state. This paper explores the impact of the coating material on particle charging characteristics, movement, and discharge. Particle charging, movement, and charge transfer in DC, AC, and superimposed electric fields are summarized. Furthermore, the effects of conductive particles on discharge characteristics are compared between coated and bare electrodes. The reviewed studies demonstrate that the coating can effectively reduce particle charge and thus the probability of discharge. The presented research results can provide theoretical support and data for studying charge transfer theory and design optimization in a gas-insulated system.

A systematic study comparing the wear behaviour of composites with nylon matrix (PA66, PA46, PA12) and different nanoadditives and reinforcing additives (graphite, graphene, MoS2 and ZrO2) has been carried out in order to achieve a proper self-lubricant material for bearing cages. The wear characterisation was done using pin-on-disc tests, SEM and EDX analysis. The results show that better outcomes are obtained for composites based on PA12. The addition of ZrO2 offers negative values of wear due to the metallic particle transference from the counterface to the polymeric pin.
