This review presents studies on iron meteorites (Campo del Cielo fall and an unregistered iron meteorite), an unregistered stony meteorite from Northwest Africa, and 13 tektites from the American, European, and Australasian strewn fields. The main experimental technique used in the studies was Mössbauer spectroscopy, both in transmission and backscattering geometries. For the latter, a MIMOS II spectrometer was used. Additionally, optical and scanning electron microscopies and X-ray diffraction were used. In the studied iron meteorites, kamacite is found as the main mineral. Campo del Cielo meteorite exhibits Widmanstätten patterns and schreibersite inclusions. The unregistered iron meteorite has Neumann lines and schreibersite inclusions. We have assigned Campo del Cielo as an octahedrite and the unregistered iron meteorite as a hexahedrite. The unregistered stony meteorite is composed mainly of iron-free silicates; at 4.2 K, the spectrum indicates maghemite and 1% troilite. The Cambodian tektite appeared individualized from other australasites, unlike the moldavite, which tends to cluster with them. Our analyses do not allow dismissing doubts on the provenance of tibetanites. The Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio was found to be higher for Muong Nong-type tektites than for splash-form tektites, as expected from their morphology and solidification from melt at lower temperature.

SUMMARY Low-temperature oxidation (LTO) of magnetite is an alteration process which occurs under normal atmospheric conditions, causing maghemitization. The use of magnetic properties as palaeoclimate proxies requires improved understanding of how humidity and temperature affect such processes. We exposed natural magnetite, with grain size ranging from <1 to ∼30 μm, to different humidity conditions at room temperature and 70 °C for 1 yr. Changes in room temperature setups were very minor, but in all 70 °C setups alteration was detected by magnetic and mineralogical properties. Lowering of the Verwey transition temperature (Tv) turned out to be the most sensitive indicator of LTO, and also lattice constants correlate well with the shift of Tv. Thermomagnetic curves and XRD-results indicate that LTO affects the entire volume of the particles rather than only surface layers. The sample exposed to high relative humidity (rH) >90  per cent at 70 °C showed the strongest degree of LTO with an increase of the oxidation degree by ∼3 per cent according to Tv, and it was the only setup where partial alteration to hematite was indicated by Mössbauer analysis. The sample with extremely dry conditions (rH of ∼5 per cent) at 70 °C, and the sample that was exposed to cycles of high and low humidity in 2-weeks alternation at 70 °C, both revealed a smaller degree of LTO. The smallest change of the high temperature setups was observed for the sample with intermediate rH of ∼13 per cent. The results suggest a non-linear sensitivity of magnetite alteration to humidity conditions, high humidity strongly favours alteration, but alteration is strongly reduced when extreme humidity alternates with dry conditions, suggesting an importance of seasonality in natural weathering.

The effect of doping the ferrite alloy Fe-16Cr by the oversized impurities Sb and Au on the mechanism of the short-range ordering induced by “warm” severe plastic deformation was studied using the method of Mössbauer spectroscopy. A comparison between the results obtained and the positron annihilation data on the evolution of the defects of vacancy type stabilized by the impurities Sb and Au was performed. It has been established that the impurities Sb and Au entail a shift of the temperature region of short-range ordering realization in conditions of applying pressure torsion towards greater temperatures by 250 and 100 K, respectively.
