Abstract Sm3+ activated NaCdVO4 phosphors were prepared by the simple solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction, dispersive energy (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), infrared as well as photoluminescence (PL) techniques were used to characterize obtained samples. Irregular and non-uniform structures were observed by SEM. EDS spectra confirmed the presence of Na, Cd, V, O and Sm elements in each sample. Uuder 405nm excitation, the NaCd1 − xVO4: xSm (x = 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) exhibits a bright red emission consisting mainly of four wavelength peaks at 556, 593, 650 and 700 nm. The highest emission intensity was found with a composition of x = 0.05. The analysis of PL spectra suggest that studied samples can be used as a red emitting phosphors candidates for fabrication of white LEDs. The CIE chromaticity coordinates of prepared samples were close to the blue-emitting phosphors for NaCdVO4 and red-emitting ones for NaCd0.99Sm0.01VO4, NaCd0.97Sm0.03VO4, and NaCd0.95Sm0.05VO4. The band gap energies of phosphors were calculated from reflectance data using K-M function.

The red phosphor (TiZn2O4) is formed from TiO2 and ZnO via simple solid-state reaction. This red phosphor is prepared by chemically stable as well as inexpensive oxide materials. Emission and excitation spectra are investigated for this phosphor. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements reveal that this phosphor emits bright red emission at 611 nm, which is associated with 5D0 – 7F2 transition, with near UV (395 nm) and blue light excitation (470 nm). The measured decay time of this red emission can be fitted well with a fast decay time of 67 ms and a slow decay time of 208 ms, respectively. A broad grain size distribution is observed for TiZn2O4 phosphor. Further, photoluminescence excitation (PLE) shows a good absorption band near UV, and the blue spectral region of visible spectrum as well. The optical properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, and scanning electron micrographs (SEM) of this TiZn2O4 phosphor are studied.

Er 3+ and Yb 3+ co-doped CaBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 (CBT)-based bismuth layered-structure oxides were synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction method. Their up-conversion (UC) luminescence, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were investigated. Two strong green emission bands centered at 526 and 547 nm and a weak red emission band centered at 658 nm were obtained under a 980 nm laser excitation at room temperature. These emission bands originated from the radiative relaxation of Er 3+ from 2 H 11/2, 4 S 3/2, and 4 F 9/2 levels to the ground state 4 I 15/2, respectively. At the meantime, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) variation of two green UC emissions at 526 and 547 nm has been studied as a function of temperature in the range of 153–603 K. The maximum sensor sensitivity obtained was 39 × 10-4 K-1 at 590 K, which indicated that Er 3+/ Yb 3+ co-doped CBT ceramic is a promising candidate for applications in optical high temperature sensor.
