<p>This thesis discusses the life and work of the eighteenth-century French composer, Julie Pinel. Pinel's extant music comprises one collection of music, Nouveau recueil d'airs serieux et a boire a une et deux voix, de Brunettes a 2 dessus, scene pastorale, et cantatille avec accompagnement, published in 1737, of which a critical edition has been produced in volume II of this thesis. There is little information regarding Pinel's life and work, however, the preface and privilege included in her Nouveau recueil provide some clues as to Pinel's biography. Her life and music are examined, with reference to the social, literary and musical environment she was working in. An added dimension is that Pinel was working as a professional musicienne at a time when women were beginning to find their voice and place in professional society. Pinel claims authorship of the majority of the poems in her collection, and the rest come from anonymous sources. Pinel's literary and musical output illustrates her obvious knowledge of the current trends in eighteenth-century France, with most of her poetry written for a female poetic voice, displaying many of the fashionable themes of the day. Her music displays a variety of styles, ranging from simple airs in binary form, traditionally found in most French airs serieux et a boire, to the operatic, and the fashionable rococo styles.</p>

: In this review, we compare major points in the 2021 American Diabetes Association and the 2020 American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists/American College of Endocrinology guidelines, in particular, the assessment and management of cardiovascular risk in patients with diabetes with a focus on dyslipidemia, blood pressure, and pharmacotherapy in diabetes.

It Is Time To Leave Port Education is not a way to escape poverty; it is a way of fighting it.—Julius Nyerere, Tanzanian president, 1922–1999 As the COVID-19 pandemic subsides in most parts of the world, and as a global society we commit ourselves to its control and eradication everywhere, it is time for our “ship” to leave port. As we pull up our anchor (“anchors aweigh” means the anchor is off bottom and the ship is free to move), we must accept that there are risks out there, but we must get back to the task of exploration and production of oil and gas as never before. As I predicted in this column many months ago, we are definitely leaner (fewer people, with even more work to do) and now we need to be much meaner (better skilled, better motivated, and better focused). All the old adages apply: “life isn’t fair,” “there are no guarantees,” etc.—but a commitment to “duty, honor, and service” (an unofficial motto of my employer, Texas A&M University) stands firm in my mind for our industry. As we leave port, we must have the confidence and purpose that has defined our industry since its inception—improving lives, mitigating poverty, and providing the energy to enable a modern global society. Reasons We Must Change as an Industry Life’s a bit like mountaineering—never look down.— Edmund Hillary, New Zealand explorer, 1919–2008 I was in a panel session a few weeks back and, as SPE President, I am certain they saved the toughest question for me: “What are the reasons we must change as an industry?” I confess that this question was particularly hard because it requires a sketch of our future strategies as an industry and as a professional society, which in many ways remains undefined. Fortunately, I had some advance notice and was able to put some thought into my answer. Paraphrasing Darwin, “we must adapt or die.” It is that simple. Our industry provides enormous societal benefit, and just as the future of renewables lies in metals for batteries, conducting materials, circuitry, etc., the present and future of manufacturing lies in oil and gas. There simply are no viable substitutes.

OBJECTIVE Second-generation antipsychotic (SGA) prescription use has become increasingly prevalent in the pediatric population, despite metabolic adverse effects. A significant number of SGA medications are prescribed for indications that are not approved by the FDA. This study aimed to quantify clinician adherence to the FDA and professional society indication, age, and dosing guidelines when prescribing SGA medications for pediatric patients. METHODS We used electronic health record data from 3 health care systems. We analyzed outpatient encounters where a pediatric patient was prescribed an SGA during an 18-month time frame. Clinician prescribing patterns were compared to a therapeutic regimen table created using professional society guidelines and FDA medication labels. RESULTS Most of the encounters listed an indication that was not documented as a recommended use (84.3%). Most prescriptions aligned with the generalized dose guidelines (93.8%) and age guidelines (94.9%). Clinicians were more likely to follow indication guidelines when prescribing risperidone, the highest adherence medication, compared with quetiapine, the lowest adherence medication (odds ratio [OR], 2.5; 95% CI, 1.1–6.0). Compared with prescriptions for younger children, clinicians were more likely to follow indication guidelines for children aged 13 to 15 years (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.1–7.2) and 16 to 18 years (OR, 3.1; 95% CI, 1.2–8.1). CONCLUSION Community clinicians overall demonstrated a low level of adherence to indication guidelines when prescribing SGA medications to pediatric populations, while maintaining higher adherence to age and dosing guidelines. Older children were more likely to receive an SGA prescription for recommended indications compared with younger children.
