Статья посвящена усовершенствованию способа получения 2,4,6-тригидрокситолуола, востребованного химического реагента в синтезе азокрасителей и пигментов, а также химико-фармацевтических препаратов и различных полимеров. Основным сырьем для его получения является 2,4,6-тринитротолуол, который подвергают каталитическому гидрированию с последующим гидролизом образовавшегося 2,4,6-триаминотолуола. В данной работе предложены условия многоциклового использования палладиевого катализатора гидрирования 2,4,6-тринитротолуола, позволяющие сохранять активность катализатора и повысить выход 2,4,6-триаминотолуола выше 98 %. Аминопроизводное выделяется в виде дисульфата действием концентрированной серной кислоты. Кроме того, изучено влияние соотношения вода/дисульфат 2,4,6-триаминотолуола на выход 2,4,6-тригидрокситолуола; найдены условия, в которых выход на стадии гидролиза увеличен до 83-84 %. Проведен сравнительный анализ различных способов выделения 2,4,6-тригидрокситолуола из реакционной массы. The paper is concerned with upgrading the synthetic method for 2,4,6-trihydroxytoluene, an in-demand chemical reactant in the synthesis of azo-dyes and pigments, as well as chemical pharmaceuticals and various polymers. The basic feedstock for the synthesis thereof is 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, which is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation followed by hydrolysis of the resulting 2,4,6-triaminotoluene. Here we suggest conditions for the multicycle use of Pd catalyst employed for the hydrogenation of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene, which allow the catalyst activity to be retained and the yield of 2,4,6-triaminotoluene to be enhanced above 98%. The amino derivative is liberated as the disulfate by concentrated sulfuric acid. Moreover, we examined how the ratio of water / 2,4,6-triaminotoluene disulfate influences the yield of 2,4,6-trihydroxytoluene. Conditions were found in which the yield from hydrolysis is 83-84 %. Different methods for the isolation of 2,4,6-trihydroxytoluene from the reaction mixture were comparatively analyzed.

The food colors are, in many countries, widely used to give food increased visual sensory quality, aiming, thus, the growth of the consumer market. Aware of this, the present work aimed to reevaluate the general properties of synthetic food dyes and natural pigments, the latter being generally used to replace the former. Then, the current analysis was based on the search for the strategy, selection of articles (with inclusion and exclusion criteria), eligibility, and data extraction. Thus, it was observed in studies that synthetic food dyes may cause several harmful effects to human health, among them, genetic damage and carcinogenicity. On the other hand, the use of natural pigments as an alternative to replace food dyes has been increasingly present in studies, presenting qualities that, previously, were not known, as is the case of anthocyanins, which have important physiological and ecological functions. It is also important to point out that the use of natural pigments goes beyond the limits of food, and are also found as sensitizers for solar cells, tissues, and medicines. Selected articles (47) leaded to a total of 72 distinct pieces of information, focused mainly on the biological activities and involving natural dyes and pigments. In short, the gradual replacement of dyes, currently used, still in large scale in some locations, by natural pigments, is already part of our present, allowing the creation of a future perspective with the production of processed foods without the damage that most of synthetic dyes produce to the human body.

The fugitive nature of the colorants obtained from sappanwood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) or the South American species commonly known as ‘brazilwoods’ (including other Caesalpinia species and Paubrasilia echinata (Lam.)) makes the identification of brazilwood dyes and pigments in historic artefacts analytically challenging. This difficulty has been somewhat alleviated recently by the recognition and structural elucidation of a relatively stable marker component found in certain brazilwood dyes and pigments—the benzochromenone metabolite urolithin C. This new understanding creates an ideal opportunity to explore the possibilities for urolithin C’s localization and identification in historical artefacts using a variety of analytical approaches. Specifically, in this work, micro-destructive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic methods following a one-sample two-step (direct application of the colloid and then subsequent exposure of the same sample to HF before reapplication of the colloid) approach are utilized for the examination of four historical brazilwood dyed textiles with the results confirmed via HPLC-DAD analysis. It is shown that characterization of reference urolithin C is possible, and diagnostic features of this molecule can also be traced in faded historical linen, silk and wool textiles, even in the presence of minor quantities of flavonoid, indigoid and tannin components. The exploitation of the same micro-sample through a series of SERS analyses affords a fuller potential for confirming the characterization of this species.

Colour is one of the elements of nature that makes human life more aesthetic and fascinating in the world. Plants, animals, and minerals have been used as primary sources for colourants, dyes or pigments since ancient times. In our daily life, we know about many substances which have specific colours. These are the substances which are used as colourants i.e.; colour imparting species. Both dyes and pigments are coloured as they absorb only some wavelength of visible light. Their structures have Aryl rings that have delocalized electron systems. These structures are said to be responsible for the absorption of electromagnetic radiation that has varying wavelengths, based upon the energy of the electron clouds. Dyes are coloured organic compounds that are used to impart colour to various substrates, including paper, leather, fur, hair, drugs, cosmetics, waxes, greases, plastics and textile materials. A Dye is a coloured compound due to the presence of chromophore and its fixed property to the acid or basic groups such as OH, SO3H, NH2, NR2, etc. The polar auxochrome makes the dye water-soluble and binds the dye to the fabric by interaction with the oppositely charged groups of the fabric structure. Pigments are organic and inorganic compounds which are practically insoluble in medium in which they are incorporated. Dyes and pigments are the most important colourants used to add colour or to change the colour of something. They are widely used in the textile, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetics, plastics, paint, ink, photographic and paper industries. This chapter is devoted to the structure and properties of dyes and pigments.

The production of pigments using single cell microorganisms is gaining traction as a sustainable alternative to conventional syntheses, which rely, in no negligible proportions, on petrochemicals. In addition to depending on petroleum, these syntheses involved the use of toxic organic solvents, which may be inadequately disposed of across a range of industries, thus compounding the deleterious effects of fossil fuel exploitation. Literature suggests that notable research efforts in the area of sustainable pigment production using single cell microorganisms are focused on the production of pigments coveted for their interesting qualities, which transcend their mere capacity to dye various fabrics both natural and synthetic. As interest in sustainable pigment biosynthesis grows, the need to devise effective and efficient cell disruption processes becomes more pressing given that the viability of pigment biosynthesis is not only dependent on microorganisms’ yield in terms of production, but also on researchers’ ability to recover them. This review chiefly reports findings as to mechanical cell disruption methods, used individually or in various combinations, and their aptitude to recover biosynthetic pigments.

Structural color occurs by the interaction of light with regular structures and so generates colors by completely different optical mechanisms to dyes and pigments. Structural color is found throughout the tree of life but has not, to date, been reported in the fungi. Here we give an overview of structural color across the tree of life and provide a brief guide aimed at stimulating the search for this phenomenon in fungi.

Purpose The review glances upon the colorants used for printing on ceramic substrates by ink jet technology and techniques, chemistry involved during the selection of the colorants. Design/methodology/approach The ink jet technology is an easy and a convenient technique, specially designed colorants are used for such applications with tailor made properties and features. Findings New developments in technology and chemistry of colorants to achieve successes in application studies of ceramic substrates. Research limitations/implications N/A. Practical implications This review glances upon the history, development and practical approach of the current techniques with available dyes and pigments and the techniques involved during the synthesis and application. Originality/value The review paper provides information about the development of the inkjet technique on ceramics and available colorants with methods.
