Abstract Circulating light in the total internal reflection within dielectric spheres or disks is called the whispering gallery mode (WGM), which by itself is highly sensitive to its surface and capable of detecting viruses and single atomic ions. The detection site of the sensors using WGM is created by the evanescent light from the circulating light inside spheres. On the other hand, there have been no reports of observation or discussion of the light orbiting outside the surface of dielectric microspheres. Here we report light orbiting the outer surface of a dielectric microspheres different from the WGM. We observed anomalously enhanced Raman spectrum at the periphery of 3 μm diameter polystyrene (PS) microspheres on a silicon nitride (SiN) film using Raman microscopy. The wavelength intensity of this enhanced Raman spectrum was accompanied by periodic changes due to interference. These features may lead to the development of high-sensitive sensors and optical devices.

Abstract Electrostatic interactions among colloidal particles are often described using the venerable (two-particle) Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) approximation and its various modifications. However, until the recent development of a many-body theory exact at the Debye–Hückel level (Yu in Phys Rev E 102:052404, 2020), it was difficult to assess the errors of such approximations and impossible to assess the role of many-body effects. By applying the exact Debye–Hückel level theory, we quantify the errors inherent to DLVO and the additional errors associated with replacing many-particle interactions by the sum of pairwise interactions (even when the latter are calculated exactly). In particular, we show that: (1) the DLVO approximation does not provide sufficient accuracy at shorter distances, especially when there is an asymmetry in charges and/or sizes of interacting dielectric spheres; (2) the pairwise approximation leads to significant errors at shorter distances and at large and moderate Debye lengths and also gets worse with increasing asymmetry in the size of the spheres or magnitude or placement of the charges. We also demonstrate that asymmetric dielectric screening, i.e., the enhanced repulsion between charged dielectric bodies immersed in media with high dielectric constant, is preserved in the presence of free ions in the medium. The focusing properties of elegant third-order Hermite–Gaussian beams (TH3GBs) and the radiation forces exerted on dielectric spherical particles produced by such beams in the Rayleigh scattering regime have been theoretically studied. Numerical results indicate that the elegant TH3GBs can be used to simultaneously trap and manipulate nanosized dielectric spheres with refractive indexes lower than the surrounding medium at the focus and those with refractive indexes larger than the surrounding medium in the focal vicinity. Furthermore, by changing the radius of the beam waist, the transverse trapping range and stiffness at the focal plane can be changed.

We investigate the Casimir interaction between two dielectric spheres immersed in an electrolyte solution. Since ionized solutions typically correspond to a plasma frequency much smaller than kBT/ℏ at room temperature, only the contribution of the zeroth Matsubara frequency is affected by ionic screening. We follow the electrostatic fluctuational approach and derive the zero-frequency contribution from the linear Poisson-Boltzmann (Debye-Hückel) equation for the geometry of two spherical surfaces of arbitrary radii. We show that a contribution from monopole fluctuations, which is reminiscent of the Kirkwood-Shumaker interaction, arises from the exclusion of ionic charge in the volume occupied by the spheres. Alongside the contribution from dipole fluctuations, such monopolar term provides the leading-order Casimir energy for very small spheres. Finally, we also investigate the large sphere limit and the conditions for validity of the proximity force (Derjaguin) approximation. Altogether, our results represent the first step towards a full scattering approach to the screening of the Casimir interaction between spheres that takes into account the nonlocal response of the electrolyte solution.
