ABSTRACT We present a new spectroscopic study of the faint Milky Way satellite Sagittarius II. Using multiobject spectroscopy from the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph, we supplement the data set of Longeard et al. with 47 newly observed stars, 19 of which are identified as members of the satellite. These additional member stars are used to put tighter constraints on the dynamics and the metallicity properties of the system. We find a low velocity dispersion of $\sigma _\mathrm{v}^\mathrm{SgrII} = 1.7 \pm 0.5$ km s−1, in agreement with the dispersion of Milky Way globular clusters of similar luminosity. We confirm the very metal-poor nature of the satellite ([Fe/H]$_\mathrm{spectro}^\mathrm{SgrII} = -2.23 \pm 0.07$) and find that the metallicity dispersion of Sgr II is not resolved, reaching only 0.20 at the 95 per cent confidence limit. No star with a metallicity below −2.5 is confidently detected. Therefore, despite the unusually large size of the system (r$_h = 35.5 ^{+1.4}_{-1.2}$ pc), we conclude that Sgr II is an old and metal-poor globular cluster of the Milky Way.

Here we describe two new Ephedrus species from the Biologiezentrum Linz´s collection: Ephedrus antennalissp. nov., which possesses 12-segmented antennae, a unique character within the genus Ephedrus; and E. carinatussp. nov., which represents an additional member of the root aphid parasitoid group within the genus Ephedrus.

Aphidius geranii Tomanovic and Kavallieratos, sp. n., is described as an additional member of the Aphidius urticae s. str. group from high-mountain habitats of Southeast Europe. The new species was reared from Amphorophora sp./Geranium coeruleatum associations. Parasitoid guilds associated with G. coeruleatum are discussed. Key for identification Aphidius spp. on Geranium plants in Europe is given.

ABSTRACT Studies in eukaryotic ribosome biogenesis have largely been performed in yeast, where they have described a highly complex process involving numerous protein and RNA components. Due to the complexity and crucial nature of this process, a number of checkpoints are necessary to ensure that only properly assembled ribosomes are released into the cytoplasm. Assembly of the 5S ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex is one of these checkpoints for late-stage 60S subunit maturation. Studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae have identified the 5S rRNA and four proteins, L5, L11, Rpf2, and Rrs1, as comprising the ribosome-associated 5S RNP. Work from our laboratory has shown that in the eukaryotic pathogen Trypanosoma brucei, the 5S RNP includes trypanosome-specific proteins P34/P37, as well as homologues of L5, Rpf2, and 5S rRNA. In this study, we examine a homologue of Rrs1 and identify it as an additional member of the T. brucei 5S RNP. Using RNA interference, we show that TbRrs1 is essential for the survival of T. brucei and has an important role in ribosome subunit formation and, together with TbRpf2, plays a role in 25/28S and 5.8S rRNA processing. We further show that TbRrs1 is a member of the T. brucei 5S RNP through the identification of novel direct interactions with P34/P37 and 5S rRNA as well as with TbL5 and TbRpf2. These unique characteristics of TbRrs1 highlight the importance of studying ribosome biogenesis in the context of diverse organisms and identify interactions that could be targeted for future drug development. IMPORTANCE Trypanosoma brucei is a parasite responsible for human and animal African trypanosomiasis. Current treatments for these diseases have numerous problems, and the development of novel chemotherapeutics can be achieved by identifying targets that are parasite specific and part of essential processes. Ribosome biogenesis is the process of generating translation-competent ribosomes and is critical for survival in all organisms. Work from our laboratory has shown that the formation of the 5S RNP, a crucial checkpoint in ribosome biogenesis, requires trypanosome-specific proteins P34/P37 and homologues of Rpf2 and L5 which possess parasite-specific characteristics. In this study, we characterize TbRrs1, an additional member of the T. brucei 5S RNP, and show that it is essential for parasite survival and has unique interactions with P34/P37 and 5S rRNA. This expands our understanding of the 5S RNP in T. brucei and identifies new targets for future drug development.


The existence of decorative elements in traditional Malay houses represents the integration between functionalism and aesthetics of architecture. Its ornamentation, form and pattern particularly in woodcarving and bamboo weaving reflect the uniqueness of local craftsmanship and the master carvers. Defined as non-structural and “additional” member of the building there are at least 15 (fifteen) decorative elements of the traditional Malay house that have been identified by previous researcher. There are Tunjuk Langit, Sisik Naga, Sulur Bayung, Ande-Ande, Pemeleh, Kepala Cicak, Tiang Gantung, Lebah Bergantung, Kekisi, Gerbang, Gerbang Pintu Sesiku Keluang, Pagar Musang, Kepala Pintu and Kepala Tingkap. Architecturally in Malaysia traditional houses were categorised based on roof design, spatial organization and geographical setting which finally this categorization were named after the states. Every traditional house in the state of Malaysia signifying particular style and architectural characteristics of that particular state. This article discusses the study of those decorative elements on the traditional Malay houses in the state of Perak known as Rumah Limas Bumbung Perak (RLBP). With the objective is to investigate the type, terms and characteristics of decorative elements site observations were done on selected thirty (30) RLBP houses located along Sungai Perak. Sungai Perak is the second longest river in peninsula Malaysia recognised as the site of early Malay settlement in Perak. The analysis on visual data and verbal data were carried out to established architectural terminology and typology based on form and style of every decorative element. The study found that nine (9) decorative elements come to be the major characteristics of RLBP; some with different name, form and style from other states. These similarity and dissimilarity contributes to the enrichment of the aesthetical theory and philosophy of the Malay traditional house in Malaysia.

AbstractAfter the foundation of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), it took nearly 32 years until Germany became a national member of the IAU. This unfortunate delay was due to both international politics and discussions within Germany (e.g. about the future role of the Astronomische Gesellschaft). The first Statutes of the IAU of 1919 excluded Germany, Austria and other countries from membership for political reasons. When the IAU Statutes were revised in 1931, Germany’s membership was possible, but could not be realized because of financial problems. In the mean time, German astronomers (as individuals) were often able to attend General Assemblies of the IAU as invited participants and to work in IAU Commissions as members. After World War II, Germany became a member of the IAU in 1951, Austria in 1955. In 1962, East Germany was accepted as an additional member. The reunification of Germany in 1990 clarified this situation. Member of the IAU is now one unified Germany.

AbstractDargaite, ideally BaCa12(SiO4)4(SO4)2O3, is an additional member of the arctite group belonging to minerals with a modular intercalated antiperovskite structure derived from hatrurite. The holotype specimen was found at a small outcrop of larnite pseudoconglomerates in the Judean Mts, West Bank, Palestinian Autonomy. Larnite, fluorellestadite–fluorapatite, brownmillerite, fluormayenite–fluorkyuygenite and ye'elimite are the main minerals of the holotype specimen; ternesite, shulamitite and periclase are noted rarely. Dargaite, nabimusaite and gazeevite occur in linear zones with higher porosity within larnite rocks. Pores are filled with ettringite and Ca-hydrosilicates, less commonly with gibbsite, brucite, baryte, katoite and calciolangbeinite. Dargaite is colourless, transparent with a white streak and has a vitreous lustre. It exhibits pronounced parting and imperfect cleavage along (001). Mohs’ hardness is ~4.5–5.5. The empirical formula is (Ba0.72K0.24Na0.04)Σ1(Ca11.95Mg0.04Na0.01)Σ12([SiO4]0.91 [PO4]0.05[AlO4]0.03[Ti4+O4]0.01)Σ4([SO4]0.84[PO4]0.14[CO3]0.02)Σ2(O2.54F0.46)Σ3. Dargaite is trigonal R$\overline 3 $m, the unit-cell parameters are: a = 7.1874(4) Å, c = 41.292(3) Å, V = 1847.32(19) Å3 and Z = 3. The crystal structure of dargaite was refined from X-ray single-crystal data to R1 = 3.79%. The calculated density is 3.235 g cm–3. The following main Raman bands are distinguished on the holotype dargaite (cm–1): 122, 263, 323, 464, 523, 563, 641 and 644, 829 and 869, 947, 991 and 1116. The formation conditions of dargaite are linked to the local occurrence of pyrometamorphic by-products (gases, fluids and melts) transforming earlier mineral associations at ~900°C.

AbstractThe expectation and arrival of a baby has always played a significant role in many societies across the globe. For simple reasons, babies are perceived as blessings from God. Hence, there is the need to shower the mother-to-be and her unborn baby with gifts and advice in preparation for welcoming, not only the bundle of joy, but also the new additional member into the family. The article is based on data that were collected from baby showers in greater Gaborone over a period of twelve months. The concept of Botho/Ubuntu cuts across as one of the major initiatives that drive baby showers. The goal of this paper is to establish what baby showers entail, how these initiatives started and how they are conducted. But most importantly, the paper will argue that baby showers are a community building initiative in the urban space. The paper seeks to establish the extent to which baby showers are gendered, using analytical insights from the theory of the “good mother”.
