When harmful bacteria are detected in the final product at a food manufacturing plant, it is necessary to identify and eliminate the source of contamination so that it does not occur again. In the current study, the source of contamination was tracked using core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) analysis in cases where Escherichia coli was detected in the final product at a food manufacturing plant. cgMLST analysis was performed on 40 strains of E. coli collected from the environment [floor (26 strains), drainage ditch (5 strains), container (4 strains), post-heating production line (1 strain)] and products [final product (3 strains) and intermediate product (1 strain)]. In total, 40 E. coli isolates were classified into 17 genogroups by cgMLST analysis. The 4 E. coli strains isolated from the intermediate and final products were classified into two genogroups (I and II). Certain isolates collected from the environment also belonged to those genogroups, it was possible to estimate the transmission of E. coli in the manufacturing plant. Thus, the dynamics of E. coli in the food manufacturing location were clarified by using cgMLST analysis. In conclusion, our results indicate that cgMLST analysis can be effectively used for hygiene management at food manufacturing locations.

Using a detailed dataset on manufacturing firms, this study analyses the link between roads infrastructure and manufacturing location in Heilongjiang province, China. The results show that the improvement in roads facilities has very limited impact on the agglomeration of economic activities in Heilongjiang province during the 2001-2013 period, but this impact has changed to be significantly positive during 2008-2013 period, which has seen greater concentration. The explanation for this finding could be that the local protectionism and failed market economy took place in Heilongjiang province more recently. We also try to differentiate this distributive effect of road infrastructures across manufacturing sectors. The empirical results show that the technology-intensive and labor-intensive firms show a greater preference for areas with better road networks, while the resource-oriented industries appear to be not attracted by better road infrastructure. Important policy implications emerge from our findings for transport planning, enabling manufacturing firms to benefit from agglomeration economies and regions to achieve sustainable economic growth.

Business location research often focuses on evaluating specific policies or explaining outcomes for a particular region. Further, the micro-foundations of random profit maximization supporting manufacturing location analysis often lack the intuitive nature of demand thresholds. While this article maintains these micro-foundations, it introduces a unifying concept of profit pools and examines how proximate supply/cost factors determine potential local manufacturing size. The approach avoids a number of limitations associated with other locational choice models. Restricted-access establishment-level data from the Longitudinal Business Database along with secondary data sources produce a model to estimate county-level contributors to outcomes of manufacturing establishment growth and consolidation. The analysis offers improved methods and accuracy for modeling establishment location outcomes, including accuracy in measuring industry size and methods for choosing among various count data distributions. The locational factors associated with county-level potential for manufacturing vary in magnitude and significance depending on the type of manufacturing, while affirming the importance of agglomeration across manufacturing types.

Increased consumption of unhealthy processed foods, particularly those high in sodium, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Nutrition information on packaged foods can help guide consumers toward products with less sodium, however the availability of nutrition information on foods sold in Kenya is currently unknown. The aims of this study were to estimate the proportion of packaged foods and beverages displaying nutrition information for sodium and determine the amount of sodium in packaged foods available for sale in Kenya. Data was collected in 2019 from five retail supermarkets in Nairobi. The availability of sodium information provided on packaged products and the sodium content were recorded. As secondary analyses, we compared sodium content labelling of products in Kenya by manufacturing location and the sodium content of products available in Kenya and South Africa. A total of 6003 packaged products in 56 food categories were identified. Overall, 39% of products displayed sodium content, though the availability of labelling varied widely between food categories, with coverage in main categories ranging from 0% (yoghurts and yoghurt drinks) to 86% (breakfast cereals). Food categories with the highest median sodium content were herbs and spices (9120 mg/100 g), sauces (1200 mg/100 g) and meat alternatives (766 mg/100 g) although wide variabilities were often observed within categories. Imported products were more likely to provide information on sodium than locally produced products (81% compared to 26%) and reported higher median sodium levels (172 mg/100 g compared to 96 mg/100 g). Kenyan products reported a higher median sodium content than South African products in six categories while South African products had higher median sodium in 20 categories, with considerable variation in median sodium content between countries in some categories. These findings highlight considerable potential to improve the availability of sodium information on packaged products in Kenya and to introduce reformulation policies to reduce the amount of sodium in the Kenyan food supply.

PurposeThis study investigates the impact of geopolitical disruptions on the manufacturing supply chain (SC) location decision of managers in UK multinational firms. The context of study is the UK manufacturing sector and its response to the UK's decision to leave the European Union (EU), or Brexit.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopts an abductive, theory elaboration approach and expands on Dunning's eclectic paradigm of international production. A Delphi study over four iterative rounds is conducted to gather and assess insights into manufacturing SC location issues related to Brexit. The panel consisted of 30 experts and managers from a range of key industries, consultancies, governmental organisations, and academia. The Delphi findings are triangulated using a focus group with 38 participants.FindingsThe findings indicate that the majority of companies planned or have relocated production facilities from the UK to the EU, and distribution centres (DCs) from the EU to the UK. This was because of market-seeking advantages (being close to major centres of demand, ease of access to local and international markets) and efficiency-seeking advantages (costs related to expected delays at ports, tariff and non-tariff barriers). Ownership and internalisation advantages, also suggested by the eclectic paradigm, did not play a role in the location decision.Originality/valueThe study elaborates on the OLI framework by showing that policy-related uncertainty is a primary influencing factor in the manufacturing location decision, outweighing the importance of uncertainty as an influencer of governance mode choices. The authors find that during geopolitical disruptions managers make location decisions in tight time-frames with incomplete and imperfect information, in situations of high perceived uncertainty. The study elaborates on the eclectic paradigm by explaining how managerial cognition and bounded rationality influence the manufacturing location decision-making process.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the strategic consequences of manufacturing location decisions, with a focus on understanding the link between collocating manufacturing with other value chain activities, via reshoring or retaining and organizational agility. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses qualitative data from 115 interviews with executives from UK high value manufacturing companies to explore the recent phenomenon of reshoring and the strategic effects of manufacturing location. Findings The location of manufacturing is operationally and strategically important for multinational companies. The spatial dispersion of manufacturing is determined by firm-specific and external factors, both of which are subject to constant change. The analysis shows that concentrating on manufacturing in their home countries enables firms to increase organizational agility and stimulate innovation. Better integration with and more extensive collaboration between related value chain activities, such as research and development, sales and marketing, leads to higher flexibility, speed and responsiveness to customer requirements. However, under certain conditions, firms also continue to benefit from the known advantages of offshoring. Originality/value This research sheds light on possible strategic downsides of global value chains, characterized by dispersed activities and intermitted processes. The results provide evidence that retaining manufacturing or bringing back manufacturing operations to a company’s home country can increase organizational flexibility, speed, adaptability, innovativeness and responsiveness to customer requirements. As these capabilities are critical for long-term survival, especially in dynamic environments, firms need to review their global factory configurations and determine whether the short-term advantages of foreign locations continue to justify offshoring practices.

Purpose Using consumer electronics brands as examples, this paper aims to present country-of-origin (COO) as a dynamic concept, by analyzing changes in the representation and perception of the “Made in China” label in Germany. Design/methodology/approach Building on previous COO research, the study formulates four research questions, which are answered with a comprehensive brand analysis using website, media, and consumer data. Information were collected from 11 Chinese brand websites, 10,681 German media articles and a sample of 490 German consumers. The authors statistically evaluated the survey data and examined the website and media data by means of a qualitative content analysis. Findings The results of the study show how Chinese brands currently present their COO in Germany and how the perception of “Made in China,” by German media and consumers, has changed to varying degrees. These changes pose marketing challenges for the increasingly prevalent Chinese brands in Germany, which need to be addressed by companies using strategic PR and marketing activities. Research limitations/implications This study suggests that COO images should be understood as a dynamic construct, and the multifaceted brand perceptions, including media reports, should be given greater consideration. Practical implications International marketers will find information on current country product recognition, and recommendations for the analysis and strategic communication of (Chinese) brands abroad. Originality/value This study contributes to COO research by examining the recent status of “Made in China” labels in Germany, focusing on China not as a manufacturing location, but as the home country for branded products. A media analysis is incorporated to add a novel dimension to the examination of brand identity-image gaps.

Abstract Objective Understanding the price components of the mifepristone/misoprostol (combi-pack) for medical abortion to improve access is critical for identifying strategies to reduce product costs for quality-assured formulations and expanding its availability and use. Methods We constructed a cost of goods sold analysis using data collected from manufacturing companies in Bangladesh, China and India supported by publicly available information related to the product formulation, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), manufacturing location, manufacturer profiles and other individual model components. Key model components were the active pharmaceutical ingredients (quality-assured or not), excipients, labour cost, operating cost and packaging. Results Combi-pack direct production cost ranges from US$1.08 for finished products which are not quality assured to US$3.05 for products containing quality assured active pharmaceutical ingredients, which means that with a 30% administrative fee applied to those prices, it could be made available between US$1.40 and US$3.97 depending on location, manufacturer’s profile, optimal market situation and the quality of the active pharmaceutical ingredients. The main model component impacting on the cost range is the purchase price of mifepristone active pharmaceutical ingredient and the current differential between quality-assured material supported by adequate documentation and API for which quality assurance cannot be demonstrated. Compared to India cost of goods sold is lower in Bangladesh primarily due to lower operating costs, including the cost of labour. Conclusions It is feasible to lower the cost of quality-assured combi-packs, through reducing mifepristone API cost and selection of the manufacturing location. However, manufacturers need to be incentivised to achieve WHO pre-qualification with a carefully built business case and require support in identifying and sourcing competitively priced material and manufacturing products to the necessary standard.
