Abstract As part of a green field development project for ADNOC offshore, NPCC here in after called as "contractor", successfully completed installation of an oil and gas processing super complex at offshore Abu Dhabi. This super complex consisted of four large interconnected platforms of different functionalities and an accommodation platform. Associated flare structures and interconnecting bridges were also installed as part of this project. Weights of the topsides in this project were varying from 7,000MT to a ∼32,000 MT. All these topsides were installed by float-over method using contractors own cargo /launch barge fleet. Gas treatment platform topside installed as part of the above project is the world's heaviest single-module topside Installed by float-over on a fixed steel jacket. Float-over is the process of installing the topside on a preinstalled jacket by ballasting and/or by other methods of load transfer such as hydraulic jacks. This installation method is widely used for heavy topsides, due to its cost effectiveness and efficiency. By float over installation method, the topside can be installed as a single integrated unit after completion of all hookup and commissioning works onshore. This paper outlines installation engineering challenges during EPC phase for the gas treatment platform topside. Design of this topside went through phenomenal changes in terms of its size and weight during EPC phase and posed several challenges to install this unit as a single module. This paper presents the installation method, and various parameters considered during installation and also includes discussion on selection of float-over barge, importance of weight control & layout design, finalization of topside support height on barge and installation aids. This paper also presents various installation engineering analyses required during design stage. Float-over installation of the gas treatment platform was carried out by the conventional load transfer method (by ballasting) and using normal spread mooring arrangement.

It is found through centrifuge model tests that the cyclic lateral load on a pile reduces the shaft friction and induces additional pile settlement. A theoretical model using the load-transfer method was proposed for the settlement prediction of cyclic laterally loaded piles in dry sand. A simple formula was established to quickly predict the pile settlement in practical engineering. The theoretical model provided a reasonable estimate of the pile settlement, while the predictions from the proposed quick prediction formula were relatively conservative. A new concept of “settlement-controlled design” was proposed to advance the methodology for the design of a pile by considering potential settlement after many cycles of lateral loads. According to the design plane derived from this study, the design-state points were suggested to be limited in the convergent zone.

Previous studies investigating the effect of excessive weight on the foot have commonly been cross-sectional; therefore, it is still unclear how the foot function gradually changes with the increased body mass that is physiologically gained over time. This study aimed to use a load transfer method to identify the mechanism of how the foot function changed with the increased excessive body mass over two years. Taking normal weight as the baseline, fifteen children became overweight or obese (group 1), and fifteen counterparts maintained normal weight (group 0) over the two years. Barefoot walking was assessed using a Footscan® plate system. A load transfer method was used based upon the relative force–time integral (FTI) to provide an insight into plantar load transference as children increased in weight. Significantly increased FTIs were found at the big toe (BT), medial metatarsal (MM), lateral metatarsal (LM), and lateral heel (HL) in group 1, while at BT, MM, medial heel (HM), and HL in group 0. Foot load showed a posterior to anterior transferal from midfoot (2.5%) and heel (7.0%) to metatarsal and big toe in group 1. The control group, however, shifted the loading within the metatarsal level from LM to HM (4.1%), and equally relieved weight from around the midfoot (MF) (3.0%) to BT, MM, HM and HL. Earlier weight loss intervention is required to prevent further adverse effects on foot functions caused by excessive weight-bearing.

Thermally induced group effects characterise closely spaced energy piles. It has been observed experimentally that the behaviour of energy piles subjected to mechanical and thermal loads, in which the piles are located sufficiently close to each other, is different from the behaviour of single isolated piles. Therefore, civil engineers encounter new challenges in the geotechnical design of such foundations. This leads to the necessity to develop practical tools to address their analysis and design. The conventional load transfer method is one of the commonly used methods for the analysis of axially loaded conventional piles. Thus, the purpose of this study has been to propose a formulation of the load transfer method to consider the thermally induced effects among energy piles in groups. The soil response is characterized in a lumped form by ascribing the behavioural features of the soil to interface elements. The individual response, in terms of strain and stress of an energy pile in a group, can be addressed for the first time through the application of the displacement factor in the load displacement curve of the single isolated energy pile. A validation through a full-scale field test reveals the capability of the approach to provide the necessary information in the analysis and design phases of the foundation for one-way thermal loads.
