Abstract Using the second data release from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), Chen et al. created a ZTF Catalog of Periodic Variable Stars (ZTF CPVS) of 781,602 periodic variables stars (PVSs) with 11 class labels. Here, we provide a new classification model of PVSs in the ZTF CPVS using a convolutional variational autoencoder and hierarchical random forest. We cross-match the sky-coordinate of PVSs in the ZTF CPVS with those presented in the SIMBAD catalog. We identify non-stellar objects that are not previously classified, including extragalactic objects such as Quasi-Stellar Objects, Active Galactic Nuclei, supernovae and planetary nebulae. We then create a new labeled training set with 13 classes in two levels. We obtain a reasonable level of completeness (≳90%) for certain classes of PVSs, although we have poorer completeness in other classes (∼40% in some cases). Our new labels for the ZTF CPVS are available via Zenodo.

Abstract We present a catalogue of white dwarf candidates selected from Gaia early data release three (EDR3). We applied several selection criteria in absolute magnitude, colour, and Gaia quality flags to remove objects with unreliable measurements while preserving most stars compatible with the white dwarf locus in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We then used a sample of over 30 000 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs and contaminants from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to map the distribution of these objects in the Gaia absolute magnitude-colour space. Finally, we adopt the same method presented in our previous work on Gaia DR2 to calculate a probability of being a white dwarf (PWD) for ≃ 1.3 million sources which passed our quality selection. The PWD values can be used to select a sample of ≃ 359 000 high-confidence white dwarf candidates. We calculated stellar parameters (effective temperature, surface gravity, and mass) for all these stars by fitting Gaia astrometry and photometry with synthetic pure-H, pure-He and mixed H-He atmospheric models. We estimate an upper limit of 93 per cent for the overall completeness of our catalogue for white dwarfs with G ≤ 20 mag and effective temperature (Teff) >7000 K, at high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 20○). Alongside the main catalogue we include a reduced-proper-motion extension containing ≃ 10 200 white dwarf candidates with unreliable parallax measurements which could, however be identified on the basis of their proper motion. We also performed a cross-match of our catalogues with SDSS DR16 spectroscopy and provide spectral classification based on visual inspection for all resulting matches.

Background: Blood and its products ordering is a common practice in paediatrics. The ready availability of blood and blood components has resulted in liberal use. Inappropriate use of blood and blood products exposes patients to the risk of transfusion transmissible diseases and allergic and haemolytic reactions. Objective: To assess blood and blood products requisition and utilization in a post-neonatal ward in a semi-urban tertiary hospital in Nigeria Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records of all transfused post-neonatal patients during the study period from 1st July 2015 to¬ 31st December 2016 to calculate the cross-match to transfusion ratio, transfusion probability and transfusion index. Results: The units of blood cross-matched were 98 and 90 blood units transfused. The cross-match to transfusion ratio was 1.09 indicative of significant blood usage. The transfusion probability was 100% indicative of significant blood usage. The transfusion index was 1.10 indicative of significant blood utilization. Conclusion: Transfusion of blood and blood products in the post-neonatal ward of our setting meet the standard criteria for quality indicators for blood utilization.

Background: Anti-human leukocyte antigen antibodies (anti-HLA) play a crucial role in graft. Detection of anti-HLA, both pre- and post-transplant is a crucial investigation in clinical organ transplantation. Objectives: Three methodologies for the detection of lymphocytotoxic antibodies were compared to establish which of these is best suited to optimise pre-transplant donor-recipient matching. Methods: Serum samples from 15 renal transplant patients were tested for the presence of anti-HLA by i) cytotoxic-de- pendent cross-match (CDCXM), ii) flow cytometric cross-match (FCXM) and iii) Luminex-based donor specific antibody cross-match (DSAXM) method, Confirmatory tests for the presence of preformed HLA antibodies were tested using Lu- minex methodology. Results: Two (13%) of the 15 patients had positive HLA Class I antibodies (Ab) using all 3 methods. An additional 2 HLA Class I Ab were identified with FCXM/CDCXM. DSAXM identified 1 HLA Class I positive, not indicated by CDCXM/ FCXM. High HLA Class II positivity (40%), identified by CDCXM, while DSAXM and FCXM identified two and one patients, respectively. CDCXM produced 4 false-positive results confirmed by lymphocyte single antigen (LSA) assay. Conclusions: The DSAXM method appears to add value in pre-transplantation screening to identify pre-sensitised patients that may not reject the donor graft due to the absence of donor-specific antibodies.
