Abstract Machine tools are important factor to determine the surface quality of the workpiece, and the online detection of tool wear is of great significance to the production and processing. In this paper, turning tools are taken as the research object, the tool wear evaluation index is defined, and the online detection system of lathe tool wear based on machine vision is designed. The workpiece processing, tool wear image acquisition, transmission, storage, and processing are completed in this system. Aiming at the problem of tool wear state detection, an adaptive hybrid filtering method is proposed in order to remove noise in the image acquisition process, nonlinear transformation and unsharp masking methods are used to enhance tool wear image quality. The GrabCut improved algorithm is used to segment the tool wear image. The Canny edge detection operator with adaptive double thresholds is used to detect the edge of the tool wear area. Finally, the upper and lower boundaries of the tool wear area are detected by using the Hough transform method, and the wear value of the tool flank is calculated, which is compared with the blunt standard VB=06mm to determine whether the tool needs to be replaced. The accuracy of the detection method is verified by experimental measurement of the surface roughness of the workpiece after machining.

AbstractIn the present study, turning of two grades of composites such as ZA43 silicon carbide and ZA43 silicon carbide and graphite was carried out. The fabrication of both categories of composites were done using stir casting technique. The silicon carbide of grit size 60μm with concentration of 5% was reinforced for one category of the composite and for the other grade of composite, 5% silicon carbide and graphite were added. Thus fabricated materials were turned on a conventional lathe using coated carbide tools (SNMG). Dry turning of the fabricated composite was carried out with varying cutting parameters. Measurement of cutting force was done for the both compositions of fabricated materials using lathe tool dynamometer. It was observed that, while machining composite containing silicon carbide and graphite, tool experience more cutting force than composite containing silicon carbide alone.

In this publication, with the help of our modelling software we have designed and modelled the edge geometry of the linear lathe tool in the model space. Our aim has been to develop a program which calculates the appropriate edge geometry with the help of some input length and angle dimensions. This is modelled in a wire frame model in a kind a file format that can be easily opened in the latest CAD softwares – so if some later modifications are needed, that can be done easily on the model. With the help of Finite Element Simulation based on given loads, boundary conditions, technological parameters and material quality, an optimal edge geometry can be determined on the cutting tool for reaching the best cutting ratio.

For precision machining of 0Cr18Ni9, a two-dimensional ultrasonic cutting device is studied, which is composed of an elliptical ultrasonic vibration-working head and a two-dimensional high-power ultrasonic driving system. The working head is designed according to the size of the lathe tool post. The flange is designed in the nodal plane, and the ultrasonic oscillator is fixed in the flange plate, which can reduce the mechanical loss of vibration. The drive system can realize the linkage amplitude and synchronous control of the two arms. The speed of the synchronous frequency tracking is fairly fast, and the precision is satisfactory. The vibration shape of the working head can be arbitrarily set, and the vibration shape is stable. Through the cutting experiments of 0Cr18Ni9, the relationship between the speed of cutting line and the quality of cutting and the relationship between the vibration shape and the cutting quality, tool wear, and chip are all analyzed.
