We continue in this paper to illustrate the implications of the dual model of liquids (DML) by deriving the expression for the isochoric specific heat as a function of the collective degree of freedom available at a given temperature and analyzing its dependence on temperature. Two main tasks have been accomplished. First, we show that the expression obtained for the isochoric specific heat in the DML is in line with the experimental results. Second, the expression has been compared with the analogous one obtained in another theoretical dual model of the liquid state, the phonon theory of liquid thermodynamics. This comparison allows providing interesting insights about the number of collective degrees of freedom available in a liquid and the value of the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, two quantities that are related to each other in this framework.

Abstract We continue in this paper to illustrate the implications of the Dual Model of Liquids (DML) by deriving the expression for the isochoric specific heat as a function of the collective degrees of freedom available at a given temperature and comparing it with the analogous expression obtained in the Phonon Theory of Liquid Thermodynamics. The Dual Model of Liquids has been recently proposed as a model describing the dynamics of liquids at the mesoscopic level. Bringing together the early pictures of Brillouin and Frenkel and the recent experimental outcomes obtained by means of high energy scattering, liquids are considered in the DML as constituted by a population of wave packets, responsible for the propagation of elastic and thermal perturbations, and of dynamic aggregates of molecules, in continuous re-arrangement, diving in an ocean of amorphous, disordered liquid. The collective degrees of freedom contribute to the exchange of energy and momentum between the material particles and the lattice particles, which the liquids are supposed to be composed of in the DML.First, we show that the expression obtained for the specific heat in the DML is in line with the experimental results. Second, its comparison with that of the Phonon Theory of Liquid Thermodynamics allows getting interesting insights about the limiting values of the collective degrees of freedom and on that of the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, two quantities that appear related to each other in this framework

AbstractWe investigate the microscopic mechanism of ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κl) of TlInTe2 and its weak temperature dependence using a unified theory of lattice heat transport, that considers contributions arising from the particle-like propagation as well as wave-like tunneling of phonons. While we use the Peierls–Boltzmann transport equation (PBTE) to calculate the particle-like contributions (κl(PBTE)), we explicitly calculate the off-diagonal (OD) components of the heat-flux operator within a first-principles density functional theory framework to determine the contributions (κl(OD)) arising from the wave-like tunneling of phonons. At each temperature, T, we anharmonically renormalize the phonon frequencies using the self-consistent phonon theory including quartic anharmonicity, and utilize them to calculate κl(PBTE) and κl(OD). With the combined inclusion of κl(PBTE), κl(OD), and additional grain-boundary scatterings, our calculations successfully reproduce the experimental results. Our analysis shows that large quartic anharmonicity of TlInTe2 (a) strongly hardens the low-energy phonon branches, (b) diminishes the three-phonon scattering processes at finite T, and (c) recovers the weaker than T−1 decay of the measured κl.

As a consequence of insufficient study of water phase change in meat accompanied by water crystallization, its modeling is currently based on the empirical dependence of the frozen water portion on temperature. Such model does not allow answering a number of questions such as of metrological order, and also of physicochemical interpretation of processes occurring in meat during water crystallization. In this paper, we propose an approach to modeling the phase change process of meat during its freezing on the basis of the phonon theory of Debye crystallization, which allows to obtain physically justified dependences of heat capacity on temperature in the phase change region. The obtained dependences may serve as a simple method for calculating the heat capacity of meat in the temperature range of 113 K to the cryoscopic temperature of the given meat type, or as a basis for the analysis and correction of factors affecting the meat freezing in the temperature range of the phase change.

In this work, an experimental campaign on different nanofluids and micro-fluids, obtained by the dispersion of three different metal oxides (CuO, ZnO, and TiO2) with diathermic oil or deionized water has been carried out, in order to extend phonon theory to liquids, as already done in a previous work on Al2O3. Thermal conductivity of stable samples was evaluated by time. The experimental results on thermal conductivity of stable micrometric and nanometric particles suspensions in oil and water showed a further proof of mass difference scattering phenomenon.
