Translation is localized within cells to target proteins to their proper locations. We asked whether translation occurs on the chloroplast surface in Chlamydomonas and, if so, whether it is involved in co-translational protein targeting, aligned spatially with localized translation by the bacterial-type ribosomes within this organelle, or both. Our results reveal a domain of the chloroplast envelope which is bound by translating ribosomes. Purified chloroplasts retained ribosomes and mRNAs encoding two chloroplast proteins specifically on this translation domain, but not a mRNA encoding a cytoplasmic protein. Ribosomes clusters were seen on this domain by electron tomography. Activity of the chloroplast-bound ribosomes is supported by results of the ribopuromycylation and puromycin-release assays. Co-translational chloroplast protein import is supported by nascent polypeptide dependency of the ribosome-chloroplast associations. This cytoplasmic translation domain aligns localized translation by organellar bacterial-type ribosomes in the chloroplast. This juxtaposition the dual translation systems facilitates the targeting and assembly of the polypeptide products.

Unsupervised domain translation has recently achieved impressive performance with Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and sufficient (unpaired) training data. However, existing domain translation frameworks form in a disposable way where the learning experiences are ignored and the obtained model cannot be adapted to a new coming domain. In this work, we take on unsupervised domain translation problems from a meta-learning perspective. We propose a model called Meta-Translation GAN (MT-GAN) to find good initialization of translation models. In the meta-training procedure, MT-GAN is explicitly trained with a primary translation task and a synthesized dual translation task. A cycle-consistency meta-optimization objective is designed to ensure the generalization ability. We demonstrate effectiveness of our model on ten diverse two-domain translation tasks and multiple face identity translation tasks. We show that our proposed approach significantly outperforms the existing domain translation methods when each domain contains no more than ten training samples.

AbstractCellular translation relies heavily on the involvements of several types of non-coding RNAs. In previous studies we have identified a dual translation system in zebrafish development, involving maternal-type and somatic-type rRNAs, snoRNAs, and snRNAs. In this study we focused on several remaining non-coding RNAs involved in the translation system; tRNAs, RNase P, and SRP RNA. Even though our studies have been limited in extent, for all three types of non-coding RNA we were able to identify a maternal-specific type, with substantial sequence differences as compared to the somatic-type variant. Hence, these RNA types complement the previously discovered RNA types in the unique dual translation system in zebrafish development.

Cross-lingual entity alignment identifies entity pairs that share the same meanings but locate in different language knowledge graphs (KGs). The study in this paper is to address two limitations that widely exist in current solutions:  1) the alignment loss functions defined at the entity level serve well the purpose of aligning labeled entities but fail to match the whole picture of labeled and unlabeled entities in different KGs;  2) the translation from one domain to the other has been considered (e.g., X to Y by M1 or Y to X by M2). However, the important duality of alignment between different KGs  (X to Y by M1 and Y to X by M2) is ignored. We propose a novel entity alignment framework (OTEA), which dually optimizes the entity-level loss and group-level loss via optimal transport theory. We also impose a regularizer on the dual translation matrices to mitigate the effect of noise during transformation. Extensive experimental results show that our model consistently outperforms the state-of-the-arts with significant improvements on alignment accuracy.

This study is about how to formulate the translation technique applied by the translator in translating Mandailing Folklore Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, to identify the translation technique used in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, and to know the quality of translation in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English. The purpose of this study were to (1) formulate the translation technique that was applied by the translator in translating Mandailing Folklore Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, (2) identify the translation technique that was used in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English, and (3) know how the quality of translation in translating Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English. The research findings are as follows. First, this study found that in translating the text Anak Na Dangol Ni Andung into English discovered the existence of two techniques, namely single translation technique 9,1% and dual translation technique 90,9%. Second, the results showed that from 22 data consists of 50% data is an accurate translation and 50% less accurate translation. Meanwhile, 77.3% were acceptable and 22.7% less acceptable. From the aspect of its readability, 86.4% had high readability and 13.6% had medium readability. From the results of this research of 22 data sources analyzed, it was identified that the quality of the translation is accurate, acceptable and has a high degree of readability.

AbstractCritics have long wondered about the setting and intent of the Old English translation of Boethius's De consolatione philosophiae, first into prose and then into prosimetrum. This article situates the dual translation within the broader context of ninth- and tenth-century literary culture, challenging the received view of the two versions as separate projects and arguing instead that the Old English Boethius was conceived and received as a vernacular opus geminatum, or ‘twinned work’. While the opus geminatum and the prosimetrum are generally thought to maintain distinct generic identities, this case study allows for a more capacious understanding of both modes, which I demonstrate were inescapably linked in Anglo-Saxon circles – and which were shaped by a broader aesthetic of prose-verse mixture.
