In the chick embryo retina (days 3-4 of incubation), coinciding with an increase in cell death, specialized phagocytes characterized by intense acid phosphatase activity have been described. In these preparations, all free cells in the vitreal humor (vitreal cells) were strongly labeled. Conventional TEM and SEM techniques were used to characterize them and attempt to determine their relationship with retinal phagocytes. Two types of vitreal cells were distinguished. The first are located at some distance from the basement membrane of the neuroepithelium, and are rounded, with numerous vacuoles and thin cytoplasmic prolongations. Images of exo- and or endocytosis were frequent; the cells showed a well-developed Golgi apparatus (Fig. 1) In SEM images, the cells was covered with short cellular processes (Fig. 3). Cells lying parallel to or alongside the basement membrane are elongated. The plasma membrane is frequently in intimate contact with the basement membrane. These cells have generally a large cytoplasmic expansion (Fig. 5).

Methods for encapsulating pollutant-degrading bacteria into microbeads of carrageenan type I, carrageenan type II, and guar gum are described. Cell suspensions in solutions of encapsulating agents were passed through a low-pressure nozzle into an aqueous medium. The resultant aerosols polymerized to form microbeads that ranged in diameter from 2–70 μm. Pentachlorophenol degradation experiments with an encapsulated Sphingomonas sp. showed degradation rates similar to those seen using free cells. These results describe three additional matrices for the microencapsulation of bacteria that have potential for use in bioremediation processes.Key words: Sphingomonas, pentachlorophenol, immobilization, encapsulation, bioremediation.

The present study describes the development of a novel functional beverage through the application of probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) 14917 in Cornelian cherry juice fermentation. The probiotic was employed in free and immobilized in a delignified wheat bran carrier (DWB) form. Cornelian cherry juice was fermented for 24 h and then it was stored at 4 °C for 4 weeks. Several parameters were evaluated such as residual sugar, organic acid and alcohol levels, total phenolics content, and cell viability as well as consumers acceptance. Regarding sugar and organic acids analyses, it was proved that the probiotic free or immobilized biocatalyst was effective. The concentration of ethanol was maintained at low levels (0.3–0.9% v/v). The total phenolic content of fermented Cornelian cherry juice with immobilized cells was recorded in higher levels (214–264 mg GAE/100 mL) for all the cold storage time compared to fermented juice with free cells (165–199 mg GAE/100 mL) and non-fermented juice (135–169 mg GAE/100 mL). Immobilized cells retained their viability in higher levels (9.95 log cfu/mL at the 4th week) compared to free cells (7.36 log cfu/mL at the 4th week). No significant sensory differences were observed among the fermented and the non-fermented samples.

Cell health situation relates to its inter structures closely. Cell scattering measurement can be a non-invasive measurement method to obtain cells structure information. But normal scattering detection by original scattering spectrum can not identify cells inner structure changing, such as nucleus radii difference. Traditional scattering spectrum analysis method for identifying cells is to plot the forward scattering (FS) light intensity against side scattering (SS) light intensity. Overlapping phenomenon always occurs which leads to serious error or even mistakes in cells identification results. The Novel even scattering angle superposition algorithm and even incident angle superposition algorithm are put forward herein. In this way, the same kind of cells with different inner structures can be effectively distinguished. The rapid, convenient and label-free cells assorting and detecting can be therefore well accomplished, and these novel methods could be a kind of important diagnostic tool in cancer or other malignant cells diagnosis.

Fructooligosaccharides are catalyzed by β–fructofuranosidase enzyme, produced by many microorganisms. However, in order to achieve a more profitable, low time-consuming process with lower cost, researchers have sought alternatives. This study aimed to select and identify yeasts able to produce fructooligosaccharides and evaluate the influence of pH and temperature on their synthesis. Yeast suspensions, solutions of 500 g L-1 sucrose and three values of pH (4.5, 5.5, and 6.5) and temperature (40, 50, and 60ºC) were tested. Yeast species were identified by molecular techniques. Among 141 yeast isolates from grapes, 65 were able to synthesize fructooligosaccharides. The maximum concentration of fructooligosaccharides was 4.8% (w v-1), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae 222 produced 1-kestose and nystose.
