The annual average rainfall in Busan area is increasing, causing frequent flooding of Busan’s Suyeong and Oncheon rivers. Due to the increase in urbanized areas and climate change, it is difficult to reduce flood damage. Therefore, new methods are needed to reduce urban inundation. This study models the effects of three flood reduction methods involving Oncheon River, Suyeong River, and the Hoedong Dam, which is situated on the Suyeong. Using EPA-SWMM, a virtual model of the dam and the rivers was created, then modified with changes to the dam’s height, the installation of a floodgate on the dam, and the creation of an underground waterway to carry excess flow from the Oncheon to the Hoedong Dam. The results of this study show that increasing the height of the dam by 3 m, 4 m, or 6 m led to a 27%, 37%, and 48% reduction in flooding, respectively, on the Suyeong River. It was also found that installing a floodgate of 10 × 4 m, 15 × 4 m, or 20 × 4 min the dam would result in a flood reduction of 2.7% and 2.9%, respectively. Furthermore, the construction of the underground waterway could lead to an expected 25% flood reduction in the Oncheon River. Measures such as these offer the potential to protect the lives and property of citizens in densely populated urban areas and develop sustainable cities and communities. Therefore, the modifications to the dam and the underground waterway proposed in this study are considered to be useful.

A control program was designed with Unity 5 virtual reality application in the automotive and robotics field. Thus, a virtual model of a robotic car was tested in a virtual reality program. After optimization, the smart controller was implemented on a specific model of the automated Chevrolet Camaro. The main objective of the present paper is to design a control program model to be tested in virtual reality and in a real-size car. Results concerning the virtual modeling of an automated car and its artificial intelligence controls have been presented and discussed, outlining the forces, torques, and context awareness capabilities of the car.

AbstractThe paper presents an experimental procedure developed for determination of the pore size, shape and distribution in a single layer woven fabric, for the construction of a virtual model to be incorporated in a future CFD software package. The procedure is based on non-destructive observation and analysis of woven samples. 14 different samples of gray fabrics of 100 % cotton in plain and twill weaves are investigated. The results obtained allow the creation of reality more realistic virtual model of the woven structure, and theoretical investigation of its porosity and permeability through computer simulation.

The most widely used single-phase asynchronous motors are described and also substitution and vector dia-grams are reviewed. Theoretical and mathematical descriptions of processes of controlling and enabling asynchronous modes of operation were provided, on the basis of which computer models of a single-phase asynchronous motor in static and dynamic modes was created in the Matlab program. Experiments were per-formed on the real and virtual models, and the data obtained were processed and compared to confirm the adequacy of the developed virtual model.

Abstract This paper explores a new line of analysis for comparing opinion writing by reference to differences in the relationships being indicated between author and addressee. It draws on recent work within the appraisal framework literature to offer proposals for linguistics-based analyses of what has variously been termed the ‘intended’, ‘imagined’, ‘ideal’, ‘virtual’, ‘model’, ‘implied’ and ‘putative’ reader (the ‘reader written into the text’). A discussion is provided of those means by which beliefs, attitudes and expectations are projected onto this ‘reader in the text’, formulations which signal anticipations that the reader either shares the attitude or belief currently being advanced by the author, potentially finds it novel or otherwise problematic, or may reject it outright. The discussion is conducted with respect to written, persuasive texts, and specifically with respect to news journalism’s commentary pieces. It is proposed that such texts can usefully be characterised and compared by reference to tendencies in such ‘construals’ or ‘positionings’ of the putative reader – tendencies in terms of whether the signalled anticipation is of the reader being aligned or, conversely, potentially unaligned or dis-aligned with the author. The terms ‘flag waving’ and ‘advocacy’ are proposed as characterisations which can be applied to texts, with ‘flag waving’ applicable to texts which construe the reader as largely sharing the author’s beliefs and attitudes, while ‘advocacy’ is applicable to texts where the reader is construed as actually or potentially not sharing the author’s beliefs and attitudes and thereby needing to be won over. This line of analysis is demonstrated through a comparison of two journalistic opinion pieces written in response to visits by Japanese politicians to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, one published in the English-language version of the mainland China newspaper, China Daily and one in the English-language version of the Japanese Asahi Shimbun. It is shown that one piece can usefully be characterised as oriented towards ‘flag waving’ and the other towards ‘advocacy’.
