This study is to acquire the confirmation data regarding the cathodic protection (CP) characteristics for slabs in marine bridges and piers exposed to hash seawater environments. It was possible to confirm the performance of CP only by the measurement of CP potentials for the slab specimens applied with zinc mesh sacrificial anode CP system. The CP current density for the cathodic protection (CProt) that CP started after a repair of corrosion was 2 times higher than that for the cathodic prevention (CPrev) that CP commenced from the beginning of experiment, and the most of protection current density (87.0-91.5%) flew to the closer top rebar in slab specimens. 4 hour depolarization potentials were higher in the CPrev system than in the CProt one, and it was confirmed that the CPrev has more protection effect with less protection current, comparing to the CProt. It was also confirmed that the CP of both CPrev and CProt by means of zinc mesh sacrificial anode for reinforced concrete structures were very effective corrosion protection technology in marine environment.

Pulse current cathodic protection had obvious advantages over traditional DC cathodic protection, but when square-wave pulse current was used for cathodic protection of oil well casing, the influence of pulse protection parameters on potential distribution was not very clear. Therefore, according to the current situation of oil fields in China, the typical formation characteristic structure of oil wells was selected and the cathodic protection model of pulse current for oil well casing was established. Based on the established model, the effects of pulse current parameters (frequency and duty cycle) and anode distance on the cathodic protection effect of square-wave pulse current were studied. The results showed that better protection effect could be obtained by choosing appropriate anode distance, high frequency, and moderate duty cycle.

Eni group is working on a gas transportation project aimed to develop and verify the technology for a “LD-HC-HP-HG” (Long Distance–High Capacity–High Pressure–High Grade) gas pipeline named TAP (Trasporto Alta Pressione). Interest in high pressure and high grade pipe steels is due to the increasing necessity of economic gas transportation on long distances between upstream and downstream in an international context. In the past Eni group has already studied long distance pipeline materials from the economic and pre-feasibility point of view. Now, with TAP project, Eni is going to do an “in field experience” with high pressure and high grade steels to concur and to promote the “gas to market” with the “pipeline” option. Snam Rete Gas competences in the project are related to: • partial contribution to the technical characterization of field welding joints; • analysis of solutions for coating and cathodic protection especially dedicated for long distance pipelines. The building of a pilot pipeline in X100 grade steel is an opportunity to test new technologies and new instrumentations to economically prevent corrosion with coating and cathodic protection in long distance pipelines where there could be logistic problems for the systems inspection and maintenance due also to the extreme environmental conditions. Design of the system solutions according to a “life cycle costing” approach and analysis of the experimental results of the pilot pipeline in X100 grade steel will be both included in the project. Aim of this paper is to suggest an experimental approach to coating and cathodic protection design on long distance gas pipeline in order to minimize inspection and maintenance costs, very relevant for such a type of application.
