In this paper, we develop a bandpass filter using a stub-loaded stepped impedance resonator (SLSIR) and calculate the even and odd resonant modes of this type of resonator using the input impedance/admittance analysis. In this study, two impedance ratios and two length ratios are operated as the design parameters for controlling the resonant modes of the SLSIR. Several resonant mode variation curves operating three resonant modes with different impedance ratios and two length ratios are developed. By tuning the desired impedance ratios and length ratios of the SLSIRs, compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filters (BPFs) can be achieved. Two examples of the UWB BPFs are designed in this study. The first example is UWB filter with a wide stopband and the second one is dual UWB BPF, namely, with UWB performance and a notch band. The first filter is designed for a UWB response from 3.1 to 5.26 GHz having a stopband from 5.3 to 11 GHz, with an attenuation level better than 18 dB. The second filter example is a dual UWB BPF with the frequency range from 3.1 to 5 GHz and 6 to 10.1 GHz using two sets of the proposed SLSIR. The measured results have insertion loss of less than 1 dB, and return loss greater than 10 dB. Furthermore, the coupling structures and open stub of the SLSIR also provide several transmission zeros at the skirt of the passbands for improving the passband selectivity.

A microstrip antenna with a circular disc design and modified ground is proposed in this paper. Circular shapes of different size have been slotted out from the radiating patch for achieving extended ultra wideband (UWB) with GSM/Bluetooth bands with maximum bandwidth of 17.7 GHz (0.88-18.6 GHz). Further, characteristic of dual notch band is achieved, when a combination of T and L-shaped slots are etched into the circular disc and ground plane respectively. Change in length of slots is controlling the notch band characteristics. The proposed antenna has rejection bandwidth of 1.3-2.2 GHz (LTE band), 3.2-3.9 GHz (WiMAX band) and 5.2-6.1 GHz (WLAN band) respectively. It covers the frequency range of 0.88-18.5 GHz with the VSWR of less than 2. Also, an equivalent parallel resonant circuit has been demonstrated for band notched frequencies of the designed antenna. The gain achieved by the proposed antenna is 6.27 dBi. This antenna has been designed, investigated and fabricated for GSM, Bluetooth, UWB, X and Ku band applications. The stable gain including H & E-plane radiation pattern with good directivity and omnidirectional behavior is achieved by the proposed antenna. Measured bandwidths are 0.5 GHz, 0.8 GHz, 1.1 GHz and 11.7 GHz respectively.

This paper presents the design and realization of a compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with a rectangular notch wireless area network (WLAN) band that has controllable notched bandwidth and center frequency. The UWB characteristics of the antenna are achieved by truncating the lower ends of the rectangular microstrip patch, and the notch characteristics are obtained by using electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures. EBGs consist of two rectangular metallic conductors loaded on the back of the radiator, which is connected to the patch by shorting pins. A rectangular notch at the WLAN band with high selectivity is realized by tuning the individual resonant frequencies of the EBGs and merging them. Furthermore, the results show that the bandwidth and frequency of the rectangular notch band could be controlled according to the on-demand rejection band applications. In the demonstration, the rectangular notch band was shifted to X-band satellite communication by tuning the EBG parameters. The simulated and measured results show that the proposed antenna has an operational bandwidth from 3.1–12.5 GHz for |S11| < -10 with a rectangular notch band from 5–6 GHz, thus rejecting WLAN band signals. The antenna also has additional advantages: the overall size of the compact antenna is 16 × 25 × 1.52 mm3 and it has stable gain and radiation patterns.
