This work represents active DNA concentration on piezoresistive microcantilever using biased AC electroosmosis. Two different sizes of DNA molecules, -phage DNA (48.5 kbp) and single-strand DNA of 20 nucleotides are concentrated on separate piezoresistive microcantilever sen- sor for detection. Before concentration, mixing of DNA molecules is performed using the same device for efficient concentration. During concentration of DNA molecules, biased and unbiased AC elec- troosmosis are needed to concentrate single-strand DNA and -phage DNA, respectively. Moreover, dielectrophoresis is induced by biased AC electroosmosis that can generate attractive force to trans- port negatively charged single-strand DNA. This paper represents a device configuration to integrate biased and unbiased AC electroosmosis and dielectrophoresis with piezoresistive microcantilever sen- sors for the detection of -phage DNA and single-strand DNA.

AbstractWe used STM to study the conductivity of 32 nucleotide long DNA molecules chemically attached to a gold surface. Two oligonucleotides containing all four base types namely G, A, C, T, one single stranded and one double helical, all showed conductance data significantly higher than DNA containing only T and A that were either single stranded d(T32) or double helical d(T32).d(A32) in confirmation. Within each sequence group, the conductivity of the double helical form was always higher than that of the single strand. We discuss the impact of structure, particular base stacking and affinity to the phase transition.

In the present study, a method based on sulfuric acid dehydration of sugar was developed to synthesis a precursor material, which can yield B4C/ TiB2 composites at much lower temperatures compared to traditional carbothermal methods. The precursor material for pure B4C and B4C / TiB2 composites were heat treated at 1650oC under Ar and Ar+H2 atmosphere. Then the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and crystallized B4C and B4C / TiB2 composites can be obtained at 1650oC

The radiosensitivities of DNA molecules from lymphocytes of human circulating blood were examined by alkaline sucrose gradient centrifugation. The single-strand breaks of DNA per rad, including the breaks formed under the present alkaline condition, were 1.2 plus or minus 0.1 breaks per 10–12 daltons DNA per rad. When the cells were transformed, the number of breaks was found to increase to 1.8 plus or minus 0.2 breaks per 10–12 daltons DNA per rad. The lymphocytes are capable of rejoining radiation-induced single-strand breaks of DNA. The rate of rejoining was dependent upon types of the suspending medium. The rate increased to ten times of that of the non-transformed cells upon transformation.
