ABSTRACT To confirm or refute the proposed link between nocardiae and Parkinson’s disease (PD), we investigated the presence of acid-fast spherical structures similar to filterable nocardiae at the midbrain nigral lesions of three patients with PD. Many clusters of acid-fast lipochrome bodies were dense around blood vessels in the two patients with Hoehn and Yahr stage II and III PD. These clusters were present in the vicinity of melanin-pigmented neurons in the three PD patients studied. Examination of adjacent hematoxylin-and-eosin-stained sections indicated that they consisted of yellow-green granules, bodies, and aggregates in ballooned glial cells. On the other hand, no clusters of acid-fast lipochrome bodies were observed at the compacta region of three control patients. Our results suggest that the immunological and genetic relationship between the acid-fast lipochrome bodies and filterable nocardiae should be investigated.

In f.c.c. metals slip is observed to occur generally on {111} planes. Glide dislocations on intersecting {111} planes can react with each other and form Lomer-Cottrell locks which lie along a <110> direction and are sessile since they are split on two {111} planes. Cottrell already pointed out that these dislocations could glide on {001} planes if they were not split. The first study of this phenomenon has been published recently. It is the purpose of this paper to report some interesting new details of the dislocations gliding on {001} planes in pure Ni, Cu, and Ag deformed at room temperature.Single crystals are grown with standard orientation and strained into stage II. The crystals are sliced parallel to the (001) planes. The dislocation structure is studied by TEM and the Burgers vectors ḇ and glide planes of the dislocations are determined unambiguously. In Fig.l primary P and secondary S dislocations react and form composite dislocations K.

Within the last few years, adrenal cortical tumors with features concordant with the diagnostic criteria attributed to oncocytomas have been reported. To date, only nine reported cases exist in the literature. This report is the tenth case presentation of a presumptively benign neoplasm of the adrenal gland with a rare differentiation. Oncocytomas are well recognized benign tumors of the thyroid, parathyroid, and salivary glands and of the kidney. Other organs also give rise to these types of tumors, however with less frequency than the former sites. The characteristics generally used to classify a tumor as an oncocytoma include the following criteria: the tumor is 1) usually a solitary circumscribed mass with no gross nor microscopic evidence of metastasis (no tissue nor vascular invasion), 2) fairly bland in terms of mitotic activity and nuclear morphology, and 3) composed of large eosinophillic cells in which the cytoplasm is packed full of mitochondria (Figure 1).

1, 2, 9, 10-tetramethoxyaporphine phosphate (MDL-832) was once considered a potential human antitussive. MDL-832 was administered orally in the diets of Sprague-Dawley rats at dose levels of 0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 mg/kg/day for 3 and 6 months and in gelatin capsules to Beagle dogs at 0, 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 mg/kg/day for 3, 6 and 12 months. Histopathologic examinations of hematoxylin and eosin-stained cerebellar sections revealed intracytoplasmic brown pigment accumulations in large fusiform neurons (presumably the motor type) of the pons. The pigment granules were found to be PAS-positive, non-acid fast, iron-free, Sudan B-positive and fuchsinophilic. Intraneuronal pigment accumulations were seen in rats after 3 months of treatment at 80 mg but not at 40 mg and after 6 months at 20 mg but not at 10 mg. For dogs the effect was observed after 3 months at 60 mg but not at 30 mg and after 12 months at 10 mg but not at 5 mg.
