Hepatitis E (HE) during pregnancy can be fatal; there are no prospective risk estimates for HE and its complications during pregnancy. We followed 2,404 pregnant women for HE and pregnancy outcomes from 1996 to 1998. Subjects from Nepal were enrolled at an antenatal clinic with pregnancy of ≤ 24 weeks. Most women (65.1%) were anti-HE virus negative. There were 16 cases of HE (6.7 per 1,000); three mothers died (18.8%) having had intrauterine fetal death (IUFD). Thirteen mothers survived: five preterm and seven full-term deliveries, one IUFD. HE among seronegative women was the sole cause of maternal death and increased the risk of IUFD (relative risk [RR]: 10.6; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.29–26.3) and preterm delivery (RR: 17.1, 95% CI 7.56–38.5). HE vaccination of females in at-risk regions before or as they attain reproductive age would reduce their risk for preterm delivery, IUFD, and maternal death.

Brain tumors are rarely diagnosed during pregnancy. Accelerated growth of intracranial meningiomas during pregnancy sometimes requires urgent surgical intervention. We describe a 41-year-old pregnant woman with severe neurological decompensation requiring immediate neurosurgery. Cesarean section resulted in maternal death. Meningioma diagnosed during a viable pregnancy should be managed according to the severity of maternal neurological symptoms and gestational age of pregnancy. Early intervention for intracranial tumors during pregnancy may save maternal and fetal lives.

The article presents a description and analysis of a rare case of fulminant form of viral hepatitis C in a pregnant woman. A pregnant 24-year old patient (3d pregnancy, 1st delivery), was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition with suspected obstructive jaundice. As a result of diagnostic process the following diagnosis was made. Pregnancy, 36-37 weeks. Cephalic presentation. Antenatal intrauterine fetal death. Acute icteric viral hepatitis C, fulminant course. C-section was performed. In spite of fluid therapy during and after the surgery, the patient developed multiple organ failure which caused death. In spite of adequate resuscitation, the fulminant viral hepatitis C caused compromised liver function and multiple organ failure development, which became the cause of maternal death. We believe that intensified medical educational activity including nursing of the pregnant women and increased quality of other medical organizational activities are required that will lead to decreased maternal mortality rate on the periphery.

Spontaneous uterine rupture during pregnancy can cause severe complications, even maternal and fetal demise. We report successful management of a spontaneous fundal uterine rupture in a 32 week pregnant who had undergone two previous cesarean sections due to preterm delivery. We explain causes of spontaneous uterine rupture and the management of this rare event in the presented case report.

The activities of the nurse related to the anti-HIV Quick Diagnostic Test: a reflection that interests nursing and public healthFrequently, the Ministry of Health publishes guidelines to the tackling of the Aids epidemic. In order to reduce the vertical transmission and the diagnostic expansion of the HIV, some regions of Brazil have implemented the Anti-HIV Quick Diagnostic Test, and nurses have an important role in this methodology. The necessity of studies that analyze the exercise of the nursing professional during the requesting, realization and notification of these tests to the pregnant or pos-pregnant woman can be noted. This essay meditates about the thematic, being useful to the nursing staff involved in the caring of pregnant women and their babies, improving the quality of prenatal care and the reduction of HIV’s vertical transmission.Descriptors: Nursing Practice, Pregnant Woman, Pos-Pregnant Woman, Vertical Transmission, Anti-HIV Quick Diagnostic Test.Prácticas de enfermería relacionadas a pruebas rápidas para diagnóstico de HIV: una reflexión de interés para la enfermería y la salud pública A menudo, el Ministerio de Salud publica directrices para hacer frente a la epidemia del SIDA. AbstractBackgroundLittle is known about how COVID-19 infection affects pregnant women, as well as about the possibility of vertical transmission or that of premature labor. Thus, this study’s objective was to identify existing evidence to directive public policies.MethodSystematic literature review assessing papers published in the most comprehensive databases in the field of health.Results12 papers were eligible. A total of 119 pregnant women aged between 22 and 42 years old and between the 12th and 41st weeks were analyzed; 90 children were born. Most pregnant women acquired the infection in the third trimester of pregnancy, 97.4% were diagnosed before hospitalization based on signs and symptoms. There was no maternal death and no vertical transmission was confirmed.Conclusionspregnant women must be cautious and vigilant because their exposure to the virus, even if at the end of a pregnancy, has important repercussions, especially for the type of labor.
