Effect of superheat and initial rolling temperature on the morphology and distribution of sulfide in non quenched and tempered free cutting steel 30MnVS has been studied by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Results show that proper superheat and initial rolling temperature can turn rod-shaped sulfide into massive or globular sulfide，to alleviate sulfide segregation and pro-eutectoid ferrite distribution along the boundary of pearlite clusters in 30MnVS , increase the intragranular ferrite content and optimize the structure of continuous casting slab.

The amount of CO2 emissions from steelworks accounts for a great share of the total CO2 emissions from industry in China. Thus, reducing CO2 emissions from steelworks is urgent for China’s environmental protection and sustainable development. This study aims at identifying factors that influence CO2 emissions from steelworks and proposing measures to reduce CO2 emissions. The life cycle inventory (LCI) of iron and steel products implies the relationship between the CO2 emissions of the steelworks and the input variables of the LCI. The Tornado Chart Tool is utilized to calculate the variation of CO2 emissions caused by the change of each input variables of LCI. Then, mean sensitivity of each input variable is calculated and the ranking criterion developed is used to identify the main factors influencing the integrated steelworks. Subsequently, measures for reducing CO2 emissions are proposed. The results indicate that the very important influencing factors of CO2 emissions in steelworks are the CO2 emission factor of Blast Furnace Gas (BFG), liquid steel unit consumption of continuous casting, continuous casting slab unit consumption of hot rolling and hot metal ratio of steelmaking. Consequently, many efficient measures for reducing CO2 emissions have been proposed, such as removing CO2 contained in BFG, decreasing the hot metal ratio of Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF), recycling BFG, optimizing the products’ structure, etc.

AbstractMill scale (MS) has a potential to use as an iron source because of its high iron content. MS mainly consists of a mixture of iron oxides, metallic iron and other base metal oxides. MS is formed on the surfaces of steel ingots during continuous casting as a waste material. In this study, the use of MS as an iron source for the production of carbon-free iron containing alloys (unalloyed iron, Fe-Ni, Fe-Cr-Ni, Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo) via a metallothermic reduction process was investigated. Thermodynamic calculations and the experimental studies were performed on the basis of 100 g of MS. The effects of different stoichiometric amounts of MS and aluminum (Al) powders (as reductant) were investigated for the production of unalloyed Fe. While, different amount of metal oxide ratios and their effects on metal recoveries, compositions and microstructure of final alloys were studied during Fe-based alloys production. The highest iron recovery during unalloyed Fe production was obtained as 95.14 % by using 100 g of MS and 100 % stoichiometric Al (28.6 g) containing mixture. In Fe-based alloys production series, the highest metal recovery values were reached up to 95.0 % for Fe, 95.1 % for Ni, 68.3 % for Cr and 77.2 % for Mo, respectively.

The transient numerical model combined with the volume of fluid (VOF) approach is employed to investigate the steel/slag interface behavior under multifunction electromagnetic driving in a continuous casting slab mold. Here, electromagnetic stirring (EMS) and electromagnetic braking (EMBr), respectively, are chosen as flow multifunction control technologies in the upper and lower areas of the mold. The computational models are validated with measurement results. The results show that multifunction electromagnetic driving changes the flow pattern, which has the potential to simultaneously meet the requirements of the steel flow in the regions above and below the nozzle, ensuring the uniformity and activity of the molten steel in the upper region of the mold and avoiding the excessive depth of the impinging jet. After EMS, the steel forms a deflected circulation flow at the steel/slag interface, and the surface velocity distribution is more uniform. EMBr still has the function of stabilizing the meniscus when multifunction electromagnetic driving is applied. Taking wave height and wave amplitude as evaluation criteria, the influence of EMS and EMBr on the steel/slag interface can be evaluated and controlled to some extent by observing the key points.
