This study evaluated changes in delta-ferrite content depending on the preheating of AISI 316L stainless steel. We also determined the reasons for the variation in delta-ferrite content, which affects corrosion resistance. Changes in delta-ferrite content after preheating was confirmed using a Feritscope, and the microstructure was analyzed using optical microscopy (OM). We found that the delta-ferrite microstructure size decreased when preheating time was increased at 1295 oC, and that the delta-ferrite content could be controlled through preheating. Potentiodynamic polarization test were carried out in NaCl (0.5 M) + H2SO4 (0.5 M) solution, and it was found that higher delta-ferrite content resulted in less corrosion potential and passive potential. To determine the cause, an analysis was conducted using energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), which confirmed that higher delta-ferrite content led to weaker corrosion resistance, due to Cr degradation at the delta-ferrite and austenite boundaries. The degradation of Cr on the boundaries between austenite and delta-ferrite can be explained by the difference in the diffusion coefficient of Cr in the ferrite and austenite. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis of material used for actual semiconductor piping confirmed that corrosion begins at the delta-ferrite and austenite boundaries. These results confirm the need to control delta-ferrite content in AISI 316L stainless steel used for semiconductor piping.

Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damages often occur, sometimes even leading to shelling on locomotive wheel treads. In this work, the RCF damage behaviors of two locomotive wheel materials with different molybdenum (Mo) contents were studied, and the influence of depth of wheel material was explored as well. The result indicates that with the increase in the Mo content from 0.01 wt.% (wheel 1, i.e., a standard wheel) to 0.04 wt.% (wheel 2, i.e., an improved wheel), the proeutectoid ferrite content and the interlamellar spacing of pearlite decreased, the depth and length of the RCF cracks increased and the average RCF live of locomotive wheel steel improved by 34.06%. With the increase in the depth of material, the proeutectoid ferrite content and the interlamellar spacing of pearlite increased, the depth of RCF cracks increased, the length of RCF cracks of wheel 1 increased and then decreased whereas that of wheel 2 decreased, the RCF live showed a decrease trend for wheel 1, while the RCF life increased and then decreased for wheel 2. The processes of shelling can be divided into three patterns: cracks propagating back to the surface, crack connection and fragments of surface materials.

This study presents results of experimental tests on quality of dissimilar welded joints between 316L austenitic and 2304 lean duplex stainless steels, welded without ceramic backing. Fiber laser welded butt joints at a thickness of 8 mm were subjected to non-destructive testing (visual and penetrant), destructive testing (static tensile test, bending test, and microhardness measurements) and structure observations (macro- and microscopic examinations, SEM, element distribution characteristics, and ferrite content measurements). Non-destructive tests and metallographic examinations showed that the welded joints meet the acceptance criteria for B level in accordance with EN ISO 13919–1 standard. Also the results of the destructive tests confirmed the high quality of the joints: specimens were fractured in base material with lower strength—316L austenitic stainless steel and a 180° bending angle was obtained confirming the high plasticity of the joints. Microscopic examination, SEM and EDS analysis showed the distribution of alloying elements in joints. The microhardness of the autogenous weld metal was higher by about 20 HV0.2 than that of the lean duplex steel. Ferrite content in the root was about 37% higher than in the face of the weld. The Schaeffler phase diagram was used to predict the phase composition of the welded joints and sufficient compliance with the magnetic method was found. The presented procedure can be used for welding of 316L–2304 stainless steels dissimilar welded joints of 8 mm thickness without ceramic backing.

In this work five different methods – AC magnetometer, DC magnetometer, Feritscope, EBSD and X-ray diffraction - were compared with each other. These methods were used to determine the δ-ferrite content of samples. The limits, disadvantages and advantages of the applied methods were analyzed. The tested material was 2507 type super-duplex stainless steel. The samples were cold rolled and heat treated to modify their ferrite content.
