Variability of sea level in the North and Baltic Seas, enforced by weather patterns, affects the intensity of water exchange between these seas. Transfer of salty water from the North Sea is very important for the hydrography of the Baltic Sea. The volume of inflowing salty water can occasionally increase remarkably. Such incidents, called the Major Baltic Inflows (MBIs), are unpredictable, of relatively short duration, and difficult to observe using in situ data. We have shown that remote sensing altimetry can be used as a complementary source of information about the MBI events. The advantage of using such data is that large-scale spatial information about SLA is available with daily resolution. We have described changes in SLA during several MBI events observed in 1993–2017. The net volume of water transported into the Baltic Sea varied between the events due to differences in atmospheric forcing. Based on SLA data, the largest inflow of water happened during the 2014 MBI. This is in agreement with previously published results, based on in situ data.

Numerical simulation results of the Black Sea circulation obtained by four ocean dynamics models are compared to each other and to in situ data in order to determine the features of the Black Sea deep-water circulation such as deep-water undercurrents. The year 2011 is chosen as the test period due to the availability of deep-sea observations, including ARGO profiles and ADCP current velocities. Validation of the simulation results is based on comparison with the temperature and salinity measured by the ARGO floats. Anticyclonic currents (undercurrents) under the cyclonic Rim Current are detected by the results of all numerical models near the North Caucasian coast. The main characteristics of undercurrents are consistent with in situ data on current velocity up to a depth of 1000 m obtained by the Aqualog probe at the IO RAS test site near Gelendzhik in June 2011. The analysis of the spatio-temporal variability of the modeled salinity and velocity fields reveals that the most probable origin of the undercurrents is the horizontal density gradient of seawater in the region.

Abstract New determinations of ocean tides are extracted from high-rate Global Positioning System (GPS) solutions at nine stations sitting on the Ross Ice Shelf. Five are multi-year time series. Three older time series are only 2–3 weeks long. These are not ideal, but they are still useful because they provide the only in situ tide observations in that sector of the ice shelf. The long tide-gauge observations from Scott Base and Cape Roberts are also reanalysed. They allow determination of some previously neglected tidal phenomena in this region, such as third-degree tides, and they provide context for analysis of the shorter datasets. The semidiurnal tides are small at all sites, yet M2 undergoes a clear seasonal cycle, which was first noted by Sir George Darwin while studying measurements from the Discovery expedition. Darwin saw a much larger modulation than we observe, and we consider possible explanations - instrumental or climatic - for this difference.

Abstract The data about the community composition, number and biomass of amphipods in three gulfs of the North-Western Black Sea are presented. The amphipod communities of the gulfs of Yahorlyk, Karkinit, and Tendra were studied and the species composition was compared with the previously published data. For each particular gulf, the list of amphipod species was composed. The quantitative parameters of the amphipod communities in the studied localities in different years were described.

Ainda assim, modelos que exigem dados in-situ impossibilitam sua aplicação em áreas com escassez de dados. No sentido de lidar com esse desafio, o presente trabalho apresenta uma abordagem de escolha do momento de irrigar, pelo balanço hídrico da água no solo, baseada em estimativa da evapotranspiração real (ETA) obtida com o uso conjunto de imagens multiespectrais do sensor MSI/SENTINEL-2 e dados de uma estação meteorológica pública. A área de estudo foi um pivô central localizado no munícipio de Itatinga-SP. Para a tomada de decisão do momento de irrigar, com base em um manejo por lâmina de irrigação fixa, foi feita a interpolação da fração evapotranspirativa entre os dias com imagens disponíveis para obter a ETA nos dias sem imagens por meio do seu produto com a evapotranspiração de referência. Essa abordagem captou variações climáticas essenciais para a estimativa do balanço hídrico em dias sem imagem. Nevertheless, some models require in situ data, preventing their application in areas with a lack of data. To address this challenge, this work presents an approach for irrigation scheduling, based on soil water budget estimation using actual evapotranspiration (ETA) obtained using MSI/SENTINEL-2 multispectral images and data from a public meteorological station. The study area consisted of a central pivot located in the municipality of Itatinga-SP, Brazil. For decision-making of irrigation scheduling, considering a fixed irrigation rate, the evapotranspiration fraction was interpolated between the days with available images to obtain the ETA on the days without images using its product with the reference evapotranspiration. This approach captured essential climate variations for estimating the water budget on non-image days. Noteworthy in this joint application is its suitability to be performed not requiring crop-, microclimate- or relief-specific parameters, making it useful for regions with a lack of data.   Keywords: evapotranspiration, irrigation scheduling, agriwater.

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) retrieval from satellites data Thus, it could provide SST data for a long time. Since, the algorithms of SST estimation by using Landsat 8 Thermal Band are sitedependence, we need to develop an applicable algorithm in Indonesian water. The aim of this research was to develop SST algorithms in the North Java Island Water. The data used are in-situ data measured on April 22, 2015 and also estimated brightness temperature data from Landsat 8 Thermal Band Image (band 10 and band 11). The algorithm was established using 45 data by assessing the relation of measured in-situ data and estimated brightness temperature. Then, the algorithm was validated by using another 40 points. The results showed that the good performance of the sea surface temperature algorithm with coefficient of determination (<i>R</i><sup>2</sup>) and Root Mean Square Error (<i>RMSE</i>) of 0.912 and 0.028, respectively.
