The development of specialized analytical instruments such as the SIMS, XPS, ISS etc., all with truly incredible abilities in certain areas, has given rise to the notion that electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) is an old fashioned and rather inadequate technique, and one that is of little or no use in such high technology fields as the semiconductor industry. Whilst it is true that the microprobe does not possess parts-per-billion sensitivity (ppb) or monolayer depth resolution it is also true that many times these extremes of performance are not essential and that a few tens of parts-per-million (ppm) and a few tens of nanometers depth resolution is all that is required. In fact, the microprobe may well be the second choice method for a wide range of analytical problems and even the method of choice for a few.The literature is replete with remarks that suggest the writer is confusing an SEM-EDXS combination with an instrument such as the Cameca SX-50. Even where this confusion does not exist, the literature discusses microprobe detection limits that are seldom stated to be as low as 100 ppm, whereas there are numerous element combinations for which 10-20 ppm is routinely attainable.

Two self-rating adjective check lists (ACL) were administered to 44 students in a course on psychological measurement. The first ACL administered was the regular free response list, followed immediately with a forced-choice version in which the adjectives were arranged into tetrad sets. Ipsative scoring was used and profiles compared. The correlations between the profiles ranged from −1.00 to 1.00, more than 40% falling in the negative range. Ss gave their impressions and reactions to both inventories, and evaluated the relative validity of the results. A majority favored the free-response technique and felt that it would yield a more accurate description of their self-concepts and personality structures. General consensus was that the forced-choice instructions led to frustration, increased irritability, and decreased motivation. Ss felt that the free-response instrument presented a more relaxing situation and was even enjoyable to take. Ss' verbal reactions were consistent with the statistical results. The findings suggest that the forced-choice method is likely to be inappropriate for use with adjective check lists in self-concept assessment and analysis, and may lead not only to distortion in the personality profiles, but also to reversals.

A retrospective analysis of results of percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PNLT) for corallike nephrolithiasis in lithotripter "Swiss LithoClast ® Master" and transurethral nephrolithotripsy (TUNLT). In the period 20072010 167 PNLT and 11 TUNLT were performed. Complete elimination at PNLL was achieved in 83.2% of patients, residual concretions – in 16,8% of cases, with complete elimination TUNLT – 36,4%, residual concretions – 63,6%. In 3% of patients needed for the complete elimination of the implementation of additional percutaneous accesses, while 12.6% of the patients was necessary to repeat PNLT. Complications from PNLT + DLT developed in 30,2% of cases, and when the TUNLT + DLT – in 18,2%. Percutaneous technology in comparison to open surgery with corallike nephrolithiasis can significantly shorten the postoperative rehabilitation period and be choice method of the treatment due to its high efficiency and less traumatic.
