This chapter reports how interaction between family members and caregivers as perceived by family members could be improved via context-aware, imperceptible internet of things (IoT)-based solutions. The qualitative study focused on investigating experiences of the family members and the communication between caretakers in sheltered accommodation. Interviews including both open and closed questions revealed that there is high need for improving the communication, adding to the sparse earlier knowledge. The study revealed that the family members were willing to adopt an application to improve the communication that currently was experienced as too limited and vague. The results provide a fruitful base for further actions to improve communication between family members and professional caretakers.

Abstract Context-awareness is an enabling technology of pervasive computing that allows applications to adapt themselves in responseto contexts (e.g. activity, location, temperature level, etc.). However, an issue of user conflicts in context-aware applicationsmay arise when multiple users want to access the same application. Our research focuses on this issue and proposes aconflict resolution approach that resolves the conflicts in context-aware home applications. The proposed approach takes intoconsideration the users’ special case contexts (e.g. illness of user) along with their priorities and preferences. The proposedapproach is also useful in cases where multiple users with multiple special cases try to access one application or service. To show the usefulness of the proposed approach, we have integrated the proposed conflict manager with the UbiREAL, asimulated context-aware home environment. The conflict manager utilizes different strategies and different approaches toresolve user conflicts according to the involved situation to suit the need of the family. The prototype evaluation shows thatthe users are satisfied with the proposed system and suggests that the use of users’ special case contexts in detecting andresolving the user conflicts is essential and necessary in the context-aware smart home environments.

Wireless Infrared (IR) communications system is meant to use free-space propagation of light waves as a transmission medium in near infrared band. In this paper, voice communication system is simulated and implemented by protues software using IR as a source that is established an audio communication (link to transmit and receive voices and music via infrared light). The outcome of this proposed work is to design and implementation an optical wireless system to transmit voice over a certain distance in laboratory. This system has many advantages such as is a common, inexpensive, and the transmitter or receiver can be showed to another location with least distraction
