The monthly, seasonal and annual quantity estimates of vertical fluxes of sedimentary matter from the surface layer of the Arctic Ocean, performed out over the years by various researchers, are the basis for direct calculations of incoming chemical components, minerals, and various pollutants to the surface layer of bottom sediments.

Direct determinations of the dispersed sedimentary matter in the snow-ice cover near the North Pole are carried out. The composition of sedimentary material in the snow-ice cover was studied at the maximum for the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere distance from the continents, the vertical fluxes of matter from the under-ice layer were determined. These data were obtained using sediment traps. For snow and ice investigations melt waters of large volume were studied. It was found that dispersed sedimentary matter of aeolian genesis is of primary importance in snow and sea ice.

The Northern lakes are good objects for paleoclimatic reconstructions. One of the sources of information about changes in the ecosystems of lakes are diatoms. The study of diatom complexes revealed 133 taxa belonging to 49 genera, 24 families, 13 orders and 3 classes in the bottom sediments of the thermokarst lake of the Pechora Delta. Dominated by the Holarctic representatives of benthic and fouling organisms giving preference to the alkaline environmental conditions.

The study of paleogeography of lakes is an actual and important direction in modern science. As part of the study of lakes in the North-West of the Karelian Isthmus, this analysis will establish the dynamics of salinity of objects, which will allow to reconstruct changes in the level of the Baltic Sea in the Holocene.
