This work presents methods to combine data from the Semantic Web into existing EHRs, leading to an augmented EHR. An existing EHR extract is augmented by combining it with additional information from external sources, typically linked data sources. The starting point is a standardized EHR extract described by an archetype. The method consists of combining specific data from the original EHR with contents from the external information source by building a semantic representation, which is used to query the external source. The results are converted into a standardized EHR extract according to an archetype. This work sets the foundations to transform Semantic Web contents into normalized EHR extracts. Finally, to exemplify the approach, the work includes a practical use case in which the summarized EHR is augmented with drug–drug interactions and disease-related treatment information.

This paper introduces and compares two innovative tools aimed at enhancing the collaborative work of the researchers and professionals from the West Balkan countries in the Semantic Web field. The first tool, the Alfresco system, is a version controlled content repository designed in REST architectural style and based on a set of document management and collaboration services. The Alfresco workflow engine enables organization and automation of the process activities. The second tool, the Semantic MediaWiki portal, is a semantic collaboration tool and knowledge management system that leverages the latest Semantic Web (SW) technologies and standards. By using semantic annotations, it enriches the Web contents with semantics and makes the knowledge explicit. Thus, it provides structured access to information and accurate and precise knowledge retrieval. This paper discusses the customization of these tools and their utilization in the Web Technologies for West Balkan countries (Web4WeB) project.

Semantic web is an extension of the World Wide Web (WWW) which makes the machine to understand the content of the web. The main idea behind the semantic web is to share the interlinked documents over Internet in a meaningful way. Web contents are created and designed to be read by humans that may not be understood by computer programs. Thus, they fail to communicate with each other. Semantic web brings the web structure to meaningful form of information. This article describes building blocks, several tools and techniques to implement a killer application on the semantic web.

Abstract—Service composition is gaining popularity because a composite service can perform functions that an individual service cannot. There are multiple web services available on the web for different tasks. The semantic web is an advanced form of the current web in which all contents have well-defined meanings due to nature, allowing machines to process web contents automatically. A web service composition is a collection of web services that collaborate to achieve a common goal. They reveal the established methods for web service composition in both syntactic and semantic environments. In this study Initially, we identify the existing techniques used for the composition. We classified these approaches according to the processing of the service descriptions, which can be syntactic or semantic-based service processes. We have reviewed more than 14 articles in this domain and concluded the merits of the methodologies applied for the implementation of web service composition.
