Genomic surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 lineages informs our understanding of possible future changes in transmissibility and vaccine efficacy. However, small changes in the frequency of one lineage over another are often difficult to interpret because surveillance samples are obtained from a variety of sources. Here, we describe lineage dynamics and phylogenetic relationships using sequences obtained from a random community sample who provided a throat and nose swab for rt-PCR during the first three months of 2021 as part of the REal-time Assessment of Community Transmission-1 (REACT-1) study. Overall, diversity decreased during the first quarter of 2021, with the B.1.1.7 lineage (first identified in Kent) predominant, driven by a 0.3 unit higher reproduction number over the prior wild type. During January, positive samples were more likely B.1.1.7 in younger and middle-aged adults (aged 18 to 54) than in other age groups. Although individuals infected with the B.1.1.7 lineage were no more likely to report one or more classic COVID-19 symptoms compared to those infected with wild type, they were more likely to be antibody positive 6 weeks after infection. Viral load was higher in B.1.1.7 infection as measured by cycle threshold (Ct) values, but did not account for the increased rate of testing positive for antibodies. The presence of infections with non-imported B.1.351 lineage (first identified in South Africa) during January, but not during February or March, suggests initial establishment in the community followed by fade-out. However, this occurred during a period of stringent social distancing and targeted public health interventions and does not immediately imply similar lineages could not become established in the future. Sequence data from representative community surveys such as REACT-1 can augment routine genomic surveillance.

Abstract Background: ‘Pediatric bipolar disorder’ (PBD) is a controversial diagnosis with varying rates of clinical diagnosis. A highly cited meta-analysis (Van Meter et al. 2011) of a dozen epidemiological surveys suggested a global community prevalence of 1.8%. This was further updated to 3.9% with eight additional surveys (Van Meter et al. 2019a). A narrative analysis (Parry et al. 2018) of the original 12 surveys concluded rates of PBD were substantially lower than 1.8% and led to a nine-article debate on the validity, overdiagnosis and iatrogenic aspects of the PBD diagnosis (e.g. Carlson and Dubicka 2019). This article extends the narrative analysis to include the eight newer community surveys.Methods: In terms of the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions, the heterogenous community surveys were arguably unsuitable for statistical meta-analysis and warranted a narrative analysis.Results: Across all twenty surveys there was significant variation in methodologies and reported prevalence rates. Of the eight newer surveys, five (two Brazilian, one English, one Turkish, one United States) provided information of pre-adolescent rates of bipolar spectrum disorder. These pre-adolescent rates were zero or close to zero. Rates of adolescent hypomania/mania were higher, but follow-up data suggested most hypomania did not progress to adult bipolar disorder.Limitations: Methods in the original surveys vary and criteria used for various bipolar diagnoses were not always fully described. This limitation applies to a narrative analysis but also to a statistical meta-analysis.Conclusion: Bipolar disorder is very rare in childhood and rare in adolescence. PBD as a diagnostic construct fails to correlate with adult bipolar disorder and the term should be abandoned. Hypomanic syndromes in adolescence may not progress to adult bipolar disorder. Early diagnosis of bipolar disorder is important, but over-diagnosis risks adverse iatrogenic consequences.

<p>Ectomycorrhizal fungi are central members of the forest fungal community, forming symbiosis with most trees in temperate and boreal forests, enhancing plant access to limiting soil nutrients. Decades of greenhouse studies have shown that specific mycorrhizal fungi enhance tree seedlings growth and nutrient uptake rates, and that these effects are sustained when seedlings are out-planted into regenerating forests. Whether these relationships scale up to affect the growth of mature trees and entire forests harboring diverse fungal communities remains unknown. In this study, we combined a continental set of European forest inventory data from the ICP forest network with molecular ectomycorrhizal fungal community surveys to identify features of the mycorrhizal mycobiome linked to forest productivity. We found that ectomycorrhizal fungal community composition was a key predictor of tree growth, and this effect was robust to statistically accounting for climate, nitrogen deposition, soil inorganic nitrogen availability, soil pH, and forest stand characteristics. Furthermore, ectomycorrhizal fungi with greater genomic investment in energy production and inorganic nitrogen metabolism, but lower investment in organic nitrogen acquisition, were linked to faster tree growth. Lastly, we sampled soils from fast and slow growing forests and introduced their microbiomes into a sterilized growth medium to experimentally isolate microbiome effects on tree development. Consistent with our observational analysis, tree seedling growth was accelerated when inoculated with microbiomes from fast vs. slow growing forests.  By linking molecular community surveys and long-term forest inventory data in the field, and then pairing this with a microbiome manipulation study under controlled conditions, this work demonstrates an emerging link between the forest microbiome and dominant European tree growth rates.</p>

The topic is approached from the viewpoint of community air-pollution programs and control. After a brief discussion of the economic costs of atmospheric pollution in an industrial area, a skeleton outline of the important factors in weathering by pollutants is presented. A few of the factors are considered in detail under the general headings of soiling, erosion, and corrosion. Significant differences in weathering are found for industrial, rural, marine, and very dry climates. Most community surveys include routine tests of the dirtiness of the air but exclude corrosion tests, although this factor is of great economic importance. Methods of corrosion testing are considered, and it is concluded that they are not feasible yet for community surveys. Increasing interest in corrosion, however, is undoubtedly leading to a broader understanding of the problem.

Abstract The metal mining Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) program will require mines to conduct effluent characterization and water quality monitoring on an ongoing basis. Samples will be collected four times a year, and will be analyzed for a range of parameters. This information will be used to aid in the design and interpretation of fish surveys and benthic invertebrate community surveys. There are also a number of water quality monitoring methods that may be used to help determine the cause of any effects identified by the EEM program. Mines will also be required to collect sediment samples for determination of particle size distribution and total organic carbon. This information will be used in the design and interpretation of benthic invertebrate community surveys. A range of sediment monitoring techniques are available to aid in the determination of the causes of effects on the benthic invertebrate community.
