Early childhood caries is common in Hong Kong, and parental practices on maintaining good oral health of their young children are far from satisfactory. This article reports on the effectiveness of a randomized controlled trial on family-centered oral health promotion to new parents in establishing proper feeding habits and oral hygiene practices and in reducing caries risk among 3-y-old toddlers. At baseline, pregnant mothers and their husbands were recruited and randomly allocated into 2 groups. The test group received individualized oral health education (OHE) via a behavioral and educational counseling approach while the control group received the OHE pamphlets only. Information related to the feeding habits, oral hygiene practices, and oral health of the toddlers was collected by parent-completed questionnaires and oral examination annually via home visits. A total of 580 families were recruited at baseline, and 436 toddlers were followed up when they reached 3 y old (test, n = 228; control, n = 208; follow-up rate, 75.2%). The proportions of toddlers who held food in the mouth, fell asleep when milk feeding, had prolonged use of the nursing bottle, ate before bed, and consumed a sweet snack daily were significantly lower in the test group than in the control group (all P < 0.05). Significantly higher proportions of toddlers brushed their own teeth twice daily, were brushed by their parents twice daily, and used fluoride toothpaste than in the control group (all P < 0.001). Toddlers in the test group had better oral health status with a lower level of visible plaque, Streptococcus mutans, white spot lesion, and cavitated lesion (all P < 0.05). Family-centered oral health promotion and individualized OHE for parents via a behavioral and educational counseling approach are more effective in establishing good feeding habits and parental toothbrushing practices and in decreasing the caries risk of their toddlers than the distribution of OHE pamphlets alone (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02937194).

This study aimed to determine counseling needs of female gifted students in the Asir region, as well as to identify the differences in the level of needs among female gifted students due to the school stage, and develop a proposed counseling plan. The researchers selected a random sample of (339) female gifted students in middle and high school for the academic year 1439/1440 AH, who were classified as gifted according to the classification of the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, their ages ranging between (13-18) years. The number of female gifted students at Middle schools in the research sample were 163 students (48%) their ages ranged between 13-15 years with an average age of 13.97 year and a standard deviation of 0.765, but the number of female gifted students in the secondary schools of the study sample was (176) students (52%), their ages ranging between (16-18) years, with an average age of 17.06 year and a standard deviation of (0.886). The researchers applied the scale of counseling needs of gifted students(prepared by the researchers) on them. The results showed that the total score of counseling needs, educational counseling needs, psychological and social counseling needs of gifted students from the middle schools were high (76.895, 39.184, 37.716) respectively, and the total score of counseling needs, educational needs, psychological and social needs were also high among female gifted students at the secondary schools (77.364, 36.369, 40, 994) respectively. The results showed statistically significant differences at the level of (0.01) among the average scores of the educational counseling needs due to the school stage, the differences were in favor of female gifted students in the middle schools (t = 5.621), which was the highest educational counseling needs (t =7.923), while the differences in the total score of the counseling needs among middle and secondary schools female gifted students were not significant. score in the middle and secondary schools were not significant (t = 0.594). The results have been interpreted in light of the theoretical framework and previous studies. A number of recommendations and a counseling plan for gifted students at the middle and secondary schools have also been proposed as a guide for gifted student counselors.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the early and sustained effects of tinnitus educational counseling on chronic primary tinnitus and related problems. A descriptive longitudinal cohort study was conducted with 159 adult patients suffering from chronic primary tinnitus and sleep problems. All patients received tinnitus educational counseling, sleep adjustment, and vegan dietary advice. At short-term assessment within 3 months and long-term follow-up at 6–26 months, perceived changes in tinnitus were assessed with the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and the Tinnitus Evaluation Questionnaire (TEQ), respectively. In TEQ, the volume of subjective tinnitus was scored according to realistic environments in which tinnitus could be heard. Sleep quality was assessed with questionnaires developed in our laboratory. Most of the subjects showed significant early improvement in their THI scores (96/159, 60.38%; from 46.11 ± 22.74 to 31.94 ± 20.41,t= 11.16,p< 0.001, Cohen’sd= 0.66). Tinnitus volume (39/159, 24.53%, from 2,2 to 2,1,z= -3.56,p< 0.001) and sleep quality (68/159, 42.77%; from 7.13 ± 3.11 to 6.31 ± 2.75,t= 3.73,p< 0.001, Cohen’sd= 0.28) were also improved. Long-term follow-up TEQ results indicated that tinnitus loudness, the impact of tinnitus on sleep, concentration, and emotional state were all improved since the prior consultation (p= 0.001, 0.026, 0.012, and <0.001). Short-term improvement of tinnitus severity correlated directly with improvement of sleep quality (odds ratio (OR) = 0.30, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.14–0.64,p= 0.002), initial THI score (OR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.04,p= 0.006), compliance with sleep advice (OR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.02–5.05,p= 0.044), and nervous disposition (OR = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.25–6.30,p= 0.013). A future randomized controlled trial would be carried out to examine the effect of sole tinnitus educational counseling.
